BattlEye Extended Controls (BEC) is Windows server software that connects to an Arma 3 dedicated server through BattlEye RCon. It runs on the server machine, not on players’ PCs. To set it up, enable BattlEye, configure an RCon password and port in the active BattlEye configuration, point BEC’s Config.cfg at that BattlEye directory, then start Bec.exe with -f Config.cfg --dsc. Administrator permissions, logs, filters and restart schedules are configured in separate BEC files.

What BEC does—and what it does not do
BattlEye-Extended-Controls (BEC) is a server-side control program created by nuxil (Stian Mikalsen). It uses BattlEye’s RCon protocol to send administrative commands and receive server information. That lets an administrator manage players, broadcast messages, enforce filters and coordinate scheduled shutdowns without entering every command manually in the server console.

BEC is not an Arma 3 client mod. Players do not install it, load it in the launcher or download a matching workshop item. A Nitrado guide describes it as a server application with no client-side installation requirement. Only the Windows machine running the dedicated server—or a Windows machine that can reach its RCon endpoint—needs the BEC files.
The original developer ended official support and hosting in 2014. Current distributions therefore come from unofficial community forks. Treat a fork as third-party server software: verify where it came from, check that its files are intact, and confirm that it still works with your Windows build and the BattlEye version shipped with your Arma 3 server.

Requirements and the connection model
- A Windows Arma 3 dedicated server with BattlEye enabled.
- Access to the server’s active BattlEye directory and its configuration files.
- A BattlEye RCon password and RCon port that you control.
- A BEC distribution copied to a folder on the server machine, or network access to the server if BEC runs elsewhere.
- Write access for BEC to its own logs, configuration and schedule files.
The data path is straightforward:
- Arma 3 starts BattlEye and reads its active server configuration.
- BattlEye opens the RCon listener on the configured port and protects it with the configured password.
- BEC reads its own
Config.cfg, connects to that IP address and port, and authenticates with the same RCon credentials. - BEC loads the administrator, command, filter and scheduler files, then issues RCon commands as events occur.
If any one of those layers points at a different directory, port or password, BEC may start normally but fail to control the server.
1. Confirm BattlEye before installing BEC
Use a Windows dedicated-server installation, not a client-only Arma 3 installation. BattlEye client and server files are distributed with the game, and BattlEye publishes a Windows RCon utility and protocol specification. Start the Arma 3 server once with BattlEye enabled and verify that it creates or uses its BattlEye folder. Do not assume that a similarly named folder elsewhere on the disk is active; launch parameters, server wrappers and host panels can select a different location.

2. Configure BattlEye RCon
In the active BattlEye directory, create or verify the RCon settings in the server configuration. Depending on the server executable and distribution, the file may be named BEServer.cfg or BEServer_x64.cfg; edit the file that your running server actually reads.
Set the password and port
The configuration must contain an RCon password and an RCon port. The names used by BattlEye are commonly written as RConPassword and RConPort. Use a long, unique password and choose a port that is free on the host. The port is not a universal Arma 3 default: BEC’s Port value must be identical to the value in this active BattlEye file.

If a hosting control panel regenerates BattlEye configuration files, make the change in the panel or its documented override mechanism. Otherwise, a restart may silently restore an older password or port.
Create the required bans file
Create an empty bans.txt in the same active BattlEye directory if it does not already exist. BEC distributions and hosting guides commonly expect this file even when no bans have been issued. A missing file is a documented cause of BEC startup failure.
Restart the Arma 3 server after saving the BattlEye settings and check its startup output for confirmation that BattlEye loaded and opened RCon. Do not continue to BEC until the server is using the intended password and port.
3. Install BEC on the server
Obtain a current, reputable community BEC distribution or fork. Because official support ended in 2014, check the fork’s release notes, Windows compatibility and file integrity rather than downloading an unverified executable from a random mirror.
Extract the distribution into a dedicated folder on the machine that will run BEC. Keeping BEC separate from the Arma 3 executable and from the BattlEye directory makes updates and backups safer. The BEC folder should contain Bec.exe, Config.cfg and the XML files referenced by that configuration.

The community README’s most important installation warning is to change BePath so it matches the BattlEye directory in use. A path copied from an example, an old server instance or a different drive will prevent BEC from finding BattlEye’s files.
4. Edit Config.cfg
Open BEC’s Config.cfg in a text editor and check every path and connection value. Keep the file names that your distribution supplied, but make sure each one resolves from the BEC working directory or uses a correct absolute path.
Connection values
Ip: use127.0.0.1when BEC and the Arma 3 server run on the same Windows machine. If BEC runs on another machine, use the server address reachable from that machine and allow the RCon port through the required firewall rules.Port: set this to exactly the RCon port declared in the activeBEServer.cfgorBEServer_x64.cfg. A mismatch causes connection failure even when both programs are running.- RCon password: enter the same password configured for BattlEye. Do not leave an example password in production.
BePath: point to the active BattlEye directory, not merely the Arma 3 root folder. On Windows, use the path syntax accepted by your BEC build and avoid accidentally pointing at a backup copy.
File paths
Verify the paths for Admins.xml, Commands.xml and Scheduler.xml. These files have different jobs: administrators and groups are defined in one, command permissions in another, and timed actions in the scheduler. If you move the BEC folder, recheck every relative path. A valid connection with an invalid XML path can leave BEC online but without the permissions or schedules you expected.
5. Start BEC with the documented command
Open Command Prompt in the BEC working directory and run:

Use a batch file
- Create a text file beside
Bec.exeand give it a.batextension. - Set the batch file’s working directory to the BEC folder, or change to that directory before the launch command.
- Run
Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc. - Keep the console open during the first test so you can read connection, path and XML errors.
A batch file is useful when the Arma 3 server is itself started by a script: launch the game server first, wait until BattlEye is ready, and then start BEC. Starting both processes simultaneously can make BEC attempt its first connection before RCon is listening.
Use a shortcut
Create a Windows shortcut to Bec.exe, put -f Config.cfg --dsc in the shortcut’s arguments, and set the shortcut’s “Start in” field to the BEC folder. The equivalent shortcut target using -f Config.cfg is documented by hosting guides. Test the shortcut interactively before placing it in Task Scheduler or another service wrapper.
6. Configure administrators and commands
BEC separates identity from permission. Add administrator identities and groups in Admins.xml, then define what those groups may execute in Commands.xml. Follow the XML structure included with your distribution; do not delete required root elements or rename attributes because BEC may ignore a malformed file.
Build the smallest useful permission set
- Create one administrator entry for the server owner and confirm it can authenticate.
- Create separate groups for trusted moderators and full administrators rather than giving every operator unrestricted access.
- Assign only the commands each group needs in
Commands.xml. - Test a permitted command and a denied command with each group while the server is empty or in a maintenance window.
Keep administrator files private. They identify privileged users and may contain credentials or identifiers. Back them up with the rest of the server configuration, but do not publish them in a public repository.
7. Set up logs, filters and server controls
BEC can handle more than ad-hoc administration. The exact switches and XML elements vary by fork, so use the sample files shipped with your build and enable only the features you understand.

- Chat and event logs: record player chat and server events for moderation and post-incident review.
- Name and word filters: flag or block prohibited names and terms.
- Anti-spam: limit repeated chat or command activity.
- Lobby-idle kicking: remove players who remain idle in the lobby.
- Slot limits: enforce the capacity policy you want during peak periods.
- Whitelists: allow approved players or identifiers when the server is restricted.
Turn on one control at a time and inspect the resulting BEC log. An over-broad word filter or an aggressive idle rule can remove legitimate players, while a malformed XML file may disable an entire feature without changing the game server itself.

Edit Scheduler.xml for timed broadcasts and maintenance actions. The community README includes a sample schedule that sends several warnings before a scheduled shutdown; its times and messages are intended to be changed for your server, not copied as universal defaults.
A safe restart sequence
- Choose a maintenance time that matches your community’s time zone and normal player activity.
- Add an early warning message explaining the planned restart.
- Add additional warnings at shorter intervals as the restart approaches.
- Send a final message that states when players must stop joining or save progress.
- Issue the shutdown or restart action only after the final warning.
- Ensure the process that launches Arma 3 starts it again after termination, then start BEC after BattlEye is available.
Do not assume a schedule survives a server move. Relative paths, local time settings and host-panel restart policies can all change. After editing Scheduler.xml, observe one complete test cycle with a short, temporary interval before committing a daily or weekly schedule.
9. Troubleshoot the first launch

When diagnosing, change one variable at a time. First prove that BattlEye RCon works, then prove BEC can reach it, then add XML-based administration and schedules. This order prevents a broken scheduler from being mistaken for a network or password problem.
Self-hosting versus managed Windows hosting
BEC needs Windows access, an available BattlEye RCon endpoint and control over the files it reads. A managed host can reduce operating-system maintenance, but it may restrict executable installation or hide the active BattlEye path.

Whichever model you choose, verify Windows availability, RCon access and executable policy before committing to a long-term setup. A host that offers Arma 3 but blocks third-party server processes cannot run BEC in the normal way.
Security and maintenance checklist
- Use a unique RCon password and never post it in a support request or public log.
- Restrict the RCon port to trusted addresses when BEC runs on another machine; use
127.0.0.1for a same-machine installation. - Keep BattlEye, Arma 3 and the chosen BEC fork current, but test updates on a copy before changing a live server.
- Back up the active BattlEye directory, BEC configuration and XML files before editing.
- Review BEC logs after every configuration change and after scheduled restarts.
- Recheck
BePathand the RCon port whenever the server is migrated, renamed or moved to a new host. - Remove unused administrator entries and review command permissions periodically.
Final verification before opening the server
- Start Arma 3 with BattlEye enabled and confirm it reads the intended BattlEye configuration.
- Confirm the active RCon password and port, and verify that
bans.txtexists beside that configuration. - From the BEC folder, run
Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc. - Check the BEC console and logs for a successful connection.
- Authenticate one administrator and test only the commands assigned to that account.
- Send a harmless scheduled message using a short test interval.
- Restore the production schedule and monitor the first real restart from both BEC and the server process.
Once these checks pass, BEC provides a repeatable administrative layer around BattlEye RCon while leaving the Arma 3 client untouched. Remember that it is community-maintained software: compatibility, file locations and available features can change between forks, so keep a known-good configuration and revalidate it after every server or BattlEye update.
