FreeIPA centralizes Linux identities, Kerberos authentication, DNS-based service discovery, certificates, host access rules and sudo policy in one system. A reliable deployment starts with a permanent fully qualified hostname, working forward and reverse DNS, synchronized clocks and a planned DNS domain/Kerberos realm. Install the server on Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux, enroll clients with ipa-client-install, and use SSSD for NSS/PAM lookups and login. The procedure below takes you from an empty server to tested centralized logins, controlled privilege and a replica-ready design.

What FreeIPA centralizes
FreeIPA is an integrated Linux and UNIX identity-management platform. Its services work together rather than as separate projects:

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- 389 Directory Server: stores users, groups, hosts and policy data in LDAP.
- MIT Kerberos: issues tickets for authentication and single sign-on.
- Integrated DNS: publishes the records and SRV records that clients use to find Kerberos, LDAP and other services.
- Dogtag Certificate System: supplies the certificate authority and certificate-management functions used by the deployment.
- SSSD integration: connects Linux name-service and authentication stacks to the directory and Kerberos realm.
- Central policies: manages host groups, host-based access control (HBAC), sudo rules, SSH public keys, SELinux user mappings, password policy and service principals.
A user created in FreeIPA can therefore be looked up through NSS, obtain a Kerberos ticket, receive a home directory at first login, and be admitted or denied on specific hosts according to one centrally managed policy. This removes the need to maintain identical local accounts and sudo files on every machine.
Make the design decisions before installing
Choose a supported server platform
Use Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the server following the upstream quick-start procedure for the release you selected. Other Linux distributions can often function as clients, but server support and package names vary by release. Confirm the target release’s FreeIPA and client documentation before committing a production build.

Fix the hostname, DNS domain and realm
Give the first server a stable fully qualified hostname such as ipa01.example.net. Kerberos service principals contain hostnames; changing the name after deployment can break authentication and service discovery. Decide the IPA DNS domain and Kerberos realm before running the installer. A common convention is an uppercase realm such as EXAMPLE.NET, but the exact names must match your organization’s namespace plan.
Do not simply reuse an Active Directory DNS domain if you may later establish an AD trust. The deployment recommendations warn that overlapping DNS domains prevent trust configuration and automatic SRV discovery. Use a distinct IPA subdomain or another non-overlapping design, and plan the network routes and firewall rules between the environments.

The FreeIPA quick-start guide states that installation with a certificate authority requires an absolute minimum of 1.2 GB of memory; 2 GB is recommended for a demonstration or test system. Production sizing should account for directory entries, concurrent clients, certificate operations, replicas and monitoring rather than treating the minimum as a capacity target. A virtual machine is a sensible first deployment because the installer brings up LDAP, DNS, PKI and related services together.
Prerequisites checklist
| Requirement | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stable FQDN | hostname --fqdn returns the final name |
Kerberos principals and service discovery depend on consistent hostnames. |
| Forward DNS | An A/AAAA lookup resolves the server address. | Clients must find the server by name. |
| Reverse DNS | The server address resolves back to the planned FQDN. | The installer validates reverse DNS and Kerberos deployments are sensitive to naming errors. |
| Time synchronization | The platform’s supported time service is active on servers and clients. | Kerberos rejects tickets outside its allowed clock skew. |
| Firewall policy | Required LDAP, Kerberos, DNS, HTTP/HTTPS, SSH and replication paths are permitted for your topology. | Installation may succeed while clients fail if service traffic is blocked. |
| Namespace plan | IPA DNS domain, realm and any AD relationship are documented. | Changing these foundations later is disruptive. |
| Recovery access | A local administrator and console or out-of-band path remain available. | You need a way back in if an HBAC or SSSD change denies remote access. |
Test forward and reverse lookups before installing. For example, run dig for the server name and address from the host that will become the IPA server. If you will let FreeIPA host DNS, decide which clients will use its resolver and how upstream forwarding will work. If an external DNS service remains authoritative, ensure the required IPA records can still be published and discovered.
Install the first FreeIPA server
1. Prepare the operating system
Set the final hostname, configure networking, synchronize time and apply the firewall policy. Avoid installing on a machine whose name or address will change. Keep the Directory Manager and IPA administrator credentials in your organization’s secure secret store; never put real passwords in shell history, automation examples or source control.
2. Install the packages
On Fedora or a compatible platform, install the server package:

dnf install freeipa-server
If FreeIPA will provide authoritative or integrated DNS, add the DNS package:
dnf install freeipa-server-dns
On a production system, use the package and repository versions supported by your chosen operating-system release rather than mixing packages from another release.
3. Run the server installer
For a first deployment, run the interactive installer so each assumption is visible:
ipa-server-install
The installer checks the hostname and DNS assumptions, then configures the directory server, Kerberos, certificate authority and other selected services. If FreeIPA is hosting DNS, answer the DNS prompts with the domain and forwarding design you prepared. An automated build can pass explicit options, but keep passwords out of command lines and scripts; use the supported secure input mechanism for your release.
Record the IPA DNS domain, Kerberos realm, Directory Manager credential and administrator credential in a protected vault. These are different roles: Directory Manager is the LDAP superuser, while the IPA administrator is the day-to-day identity-management account.
4. Obtain an administrator ticket
After installation, acquire a Kerberos ticket and inspect it:

kinit admin
klist
A successful klist output confirms that the realm can issue tickets. Use the ipa command-line client or the web interface to create users, groups, hosts, host groups, HBAC rules, sudo rules and certificates. Start with a small administrative group rather than handing every operator unrestricted directory privileges.
Enroll Linux clients with SSSD
1. Point the resolver at IPA DNS
Before installing client software, configure the client’s resolver so it can resolve the IPA server and its SRV records. SSSD guidance requires DNS to point to the IPA server or servers before enrollment. Verify both the server’s name and service records from the client. If DNS autodiscovery is unsuitable in a segmented network, plan to provide an explicit server and domain to the enrollment command.
2. Install the matching client package
Package names differ by distribution:
| Platform family | Client package |
|---|---|
| RHEL and compatible distributions | ipa-client |
| Fedora | freeipa-client |
3. Enroll the host
Use the client installer with home-directory creation enabled:
ipa-client-install --mkhomedir
The installer configures SSSD, Kerberos, NSS, PAM, certificates and host keys for the enrolled machine. It normally discovers the domain and server through DNS. When discovery cannot work, supply the values explicitly, for example:
ipa-client-install --mkhomedir --domain example.net --server ipa01.example.net
Use an enrollment principal or other supported non-interactive method when automation requires it, and protect the credential. Do not copy a completed /etc/sssd/sssd.conf with embedded secrets between hosts; enroll each host so its key material and host principal are unique.
4. Verify lookup, Kerberos and an actual login
Test the layers in order:
- Look up the directory account through NSS:
getent passwd username. - Inspect group membership:
id username. - Request a user ticket:
kinit username, then check it withklist. - Open an SSH session as that user while an HBAC rule explicitly permits the host and service.
If --mkhomedir was retained, the distribution’s pam_mkhomedir integration creates the home directory on first successful login. Without it, identity lookup can work while the session fails because no home directory exists; configure the platform’s equivalent PAM module if you need automatic creation.

Understand what SSSD is doing
SSSD is the normal Linux integration path, not an optional convenience. NSS asks SSSD for users and groups, while PAM asks it to authenticate sessions. SSSD obtains and renews Kerberos credentials, consults FreeIPA for HBAC decisions and can cache identity data for periods when a server is temporarily unreachable. The generated configuration also sets the realm, LDAP endpoints, certificate trust and host identity created during enrollment.
When troubleshooting, separate the functions: a successful getent proves name lookup, kinit proves Kerberos ticket issuance, and an SSH test proves that PAM, SSSD, the SSH service and HBAC agree. Passing one test does not prove the next layer.
Create narrow access and privilege policies
HBAC: decide who may log in where
HBAC rules determine which users or groups may access which hosts and services. Create a host group for a role, a user group for the people who need it and a rule that joins them for the required service, commonly SSH. Start with a narrow rule, test it from a real client and expand only when the result is understood. Avoid leaving a broad “allow all” rule enabled in production; it defeats centralized authorization.
Keep a local break-glass account and emergency console path while changing HBAC. Do not remove the only local administrator until remote login and recovery have been proven from an independent session.
Sudo: publish privilege by group
FreeIPA sudo rules let you assign commands, hosts and run-as identities to groups instead of editing /etc/sudoers on every machine. Define the smallest command set that satisfies the job, attach it to the appropriate host group and verify the result as the target user:
sudo -l
Review rule precedence and overlapping groups carefully. A user can receive more privilege than intended through membership in another centrally managed group, so audit effective access rather than reading one rule in isolation.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Use the other centrally managed objects deliberately
FreeIPA can store SSH public keys, certificates, service and host principals, password policy and SELinux user mappings. Central storage is valuable when an identity or host must be rebuilt, but it also increases the impact of a mistaken change. Delegate administration by role and record who owns each policy object.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.DNS, time and Kerberos: the dependencies that cannot be patched later
FreeIPA relies on DNS for Kerberos and service discovery. Clients use SRV records to locate LDAP and Kerberos endpoints, and the deployment recommendations describe selecting nearby servers first and remote replicas as fallback. A broken resolver can therefore look like an authentication failure even when the directory is healthy.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep clocks synchronized on every server and client with the operating system’s supported time service. Kerberos tickets include time limits; a clock that drifts beyond the permitted skew causes valid credentials to be rejected. Monitor time offsets as an infrastructure signal, not only after users report login failures.
When a hostname, DNS domain or address must change, treat it as a migration project with release-specific procedures. Do not edit names casually on an installed server.
Add replicas for continuity
A second FreeIPA server can continue identity lookups and authentication when the primary is unavailable, but replication is a designed topology, not a second copy made by rerunning the first installer. A replica must be able to contact the master LDAP server during setup. The project explicitly warns: “Do not run the ipa-server-install script on the replica servers.” Use the replica-specific procedure for the FreeIPA release you run.
After installation, verify replication status, DNS records, certificate renewal, time synchronization and firewall consistency on every replica. Enroll clients using DNS SRV discovery when possible so they can select a nearby server and fall back to a remote replica. If you provide a controlled server list instead, keep it current as hosts are retired or added.

Active Directory and non-SSSD clients
FreeIPA can integrate with Active Directory through a cross-realm Kerberos trust or synchronization. Trusts require distinct DNS planning, network reachability and compatible identity mappings; overlapping DNS domains are a design blocker, not a setting to fix after deployment.
Standard LDAP and Kerberos clients can interoperate for basic authentication, but Linux clients using SSSD gain the richer feature set: NSS and PAM integration, HBAC evaluation, centralized sudo, host enrollment, certificate handling and offline caching. Choose the client method according to the policy features you actually need.

Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely layer | Checks and remedy |
|---|---|---|
ipa-client-install cannot discover a server |
DNS | Confirm the client resolver points to IPA, verify A/AAAA and SRV records, or provide explicit --domain and --server values. |
| Installer rejects the hostname | Host naming or reverse DNS | Fix the permanent FQDN and reverse record before rerunning; do not proceed with a temporary name. |
getent passwd username fails |
SSSD/NSS or directory reachability | Check that the host is enrolled, SSSD is running, DNS resolves the IPA endpoints and firewall rules allow LDAP/Kerberos traffic. |
kinit reports clock or ticket errors |
Time or realm configuration | Compare synchronized clocks, verify the realm and resolver, then retry after the time service converges. |
| User lookup works but SSH is denied | HBAC or SSH service policy | Confirm the user and host groups match an enabled rule for the SSH service; retain console access while correcting it. |
| Login succeeds but no home directory exists | PAM home-directory module | Enroll with --mkhomedir or configure the distribution’s pam_mkhomedir equivalent. |
| Sudo privileges are missing or excessive | Central sudo rules and group membership | Run sudo -l, inspect effective group membership and overlapping rules, then narrow the policy. |
| Replica does not answer requests | Replication, DNS, firewall or time | Check replication status, SRV records, certificate health, synchronized clocks and inter-server firewall paths. |
Operational habits that keep authentication dependable
- Back up directory and certificate data using the release-supported method and test restoration, not merely backup completion.
- Monitor DNS, Kerberos ticket issuance, replication status, certificate expiration and clock offsets.
- Keep server and client packages on supported update streams and read release-specific migration notes before upgrades.
- Use groups and host groups for policy; avoid one-off user exceptions that become impossible to audit.
- Stage HBAC and sudo changes with a test account, a second administrative session and a known recovery path.
- Protect Directory Manager and administrator credentials, enrollment secrets and CA keys with separate access controls.
- Document the realm, DNS domain, replica roles, resolver behavior, firewall flows and break-glass procedure.
When the deployment is ready
A FreeIPA rollout is ready for wider use when DNS and time are demonstrably reliable, clients enroll through SSSD, directory and Kerberos tests pass independently, HBAC and sudo rules have been exercised with least privilege, and a replica and recovery path have been tested. At that point, adding users and hosts is routine: create the identity or host object, place it in the correct groups, apply the smallest policy that grants the required access, and verify the effective result from a client.
