What DiscordSRV is and what you need
DiscordSRV is a server-side Minecraft plugin, not a client-side mod. It runs on software that implements the Bukkit API, including Paper, Spigot and CraftBukkit. Every player can continue using a normal Minecraft client; the integration operates from the server and Discord bot.

If your Minecraft software is not Bukkit-based, this setup is not the appropriate installation path. If your host does not let you read logs, edit files or restart reliably, ask the host whether those capabilities can be enabled before proceeding.

Install the DiscordSRV plugin
1. Put the JAR in the correct directory
- Obtain the DiscordSRV plugin JAR identified by the filename pattern
DiscordSRV-Build-VERSION_NUMBER.jar. - Open the server’s main directory and locate
plugins. This is the plugins directory for the server instance that actually runs your world, not a client-side mods folder. - Copy the DiscordSRV JAR into that
pluginsdirectory. - Restart the Minecraft server.
The first successful startup creates a DiscordSRV directory inside plugins. That directory contains the configuration files used by the integration.
2. Open the generated configuration
After the restart, open plugins/DiscordSRV/config.yml in a text editor. Keep the YAML indentation intact: a misplaced space can change the meaning of a setting or prevent the file from loading. Make one logical change at a time when diagnosing a problem, so the next startup log identifies the setting that caused it.
Do not assume that installing the JAR alone creates a working bridge. The Discord application, bot, intents, channel IDs and permissions are configured separately in Discord and in this YAML file.
Create the Discord application and bot
1. Create an application
- Open the Discord Developer Portal and create a new application for the server integration.
- Use the application’s bot settings to create the bot user that DiscordSRV will operate.
- In the application’s Installation tab, disable User Install.
- Set Install Link to None. This keeps the installation intended for adding the bot to a server rather than installing it for individual users.
2. Enable the required Gateway Intents
DiscordSRV’s setup documentation identifies privileged Gateway Intents that must be enabled for the integration. Turn on every privileged intent specified by the current DiscordSRV instructions before inviting the bot. If an intent is left disabled, the bot may appear online while message events, member information or synchronization features fail.
Intent settings are separate from channel permissions. Enabling an intent does not automatically let the bot read or send messages, and granting a channel permission does not replace an intent that the bot requires.

3. Add the bot and grant permissions
- Use the application’s installation flow to add the bot to the Discord server where the Minecraft channels will live.
- Grant the read and send permissions documented for DiscordSRV. Apply them to the channels that the plugin will use, or through an appropriate role and category arrangement.
- Check for overriding channel-specific denies. A server-level or role-level allow can still be defeated by a channel permission that denies the bot access.
The exact permission arrangement depends on your Discord server’s role and category structure. The important test is practical: the bot must be able to receive the events DiscordSRV needs and send messages in each mapped destination channel.
Map Minecraft channels to Discord channels
Turn on Developer Mode and copy IDs
- In Discord, enable Developer Mode in the user settings.
- Right-click the Discord channel that should receive a Minecraft channel’s messages.
- Choose Copy ID.
- Repeat for every Discord channel you intend to map, keeping a record of which ID belongs to which channel.
A Discord channel ID is a numeric identifier. Do not enter the visible Discord channel name in its place.
Edit the Channels mapping
In plugins/DiscordSRV/config.yml, find the Channels setting. The value on the left is the Minecraft channel name; the value on the right is the numeric Discord channel ID. The documented format looks like this:
Channels: {"global": "219559668236681216", "admin": "221419146028646401"}In this example, Minecraft’s global channel is sent to Discord channel ID 219559668236681216, while admin is sent to 221419146028646401. Preserve the quotation marks and the mapping structure used by the generated file.
The first channel pair is the main channel. Decide which Minecraft channel should be the primary public conversation before editing the list. Add additional pairs only when you have copied the corresponding Discord IDs and granted the bot access to those destinations.

Set the invite and verify basic commands
Configure an invite link if you want one displayed
DiscordSRV provides a DiscordInviteLink setting. Enter your server’s chosen invite there if you want DiscordSRV’s invite-related output to point players to a particular Discord invitation. Leave the setting according to the generated configuration when you do not need an invite displayed.
Use the player commands
Once the bot and channel mapping are in place, use the plugin’s commands from Minecraft:

Give staff access to the administrative commands through your server’s permission system. Do not treat /discordsrv reload as a universal replacement for restarting: settings documented as restart-dependent still require a full server restart.
Link a Minecraft account to Discord
Player-initiated linking
Account linking is optional in a default DiscordSRV installation. A player can run /discordsrv link in Minecraft to receive the current linking instructions. The process uses a code that the player sends to the DiscordSRV bot, associating the Minecraft account with the player’s Discord account.

If the command does not show the expected state, check that the player sent the code to the correct bot and then inspect the server log and Discord permissions before attempting another link.

What linking enables
Linking gives DiscordSRV a verified relationship between a Minecraft account and a Discord account. That relationship is the basis for features that need to identify the same person in both communities. It also allows the server owner to make linking a condition of entry rather than merely an optional convenience.
Require Discord linking before players can join
Enable the join requirement
- Open
plugins/DiscordSRV/linking.yml. - Set
Enabled: true. - Save the file.
- Restart the Minecraft server, because this setting is applied through the restart-dependent configuration path.
When an unlinked player tries to join after this feature is enabled, DiscordSRV kicks that player with a message containing instructions and a code to send to the bot. The player must complete the link and then attempt to join again.
Add Discord membership or role conditions when appropriate
The linking feature can also require a linked player to belong to selected Discord servers and/or hold specified subscriber roles. Use those conditions only when Discord membership is genuinely part of your server’s access policy. A player who links an account but does not satisfy an additional server or role condition will not meet the full entry requirement.
Explain the requirement to your community before turning it on. Otherwise, the kick message may be the first time a player learns that a Discord account, a particular server membership or a role is required.

The plugin setup is the same in principle whether you administer a home server or rent managed Minecraft hosting, but the practical risk is different. Use this comparison before you commit to an environment.

Troubleshoot a DiscordSRV installation
The plugin does not appear to load
- Confirm that the JAR is in the active server instance’s
pluginsdirectory, not in a similarly named folder for another server. - Restart rather than relying on a reload.
- Read the startup log immediately after the restart and look for the DiscordSRV load result or a configuration error.
- Verify that the server platform is Bukkit-compatible.
The bot is online but messages do not bridge
- Recheck the privileged Gateway Intents required by the DiscordSRV documentation in the Developer Portal.
- Check the bot’s read and send permissions in every mapped Discord channel, including category and channel-level overrides.
- Confirm that
Channelsuses Minecraft channel names on the left and numeric Discord IDs on the right. - Check that the ID was copied from the intended channel after enabling Developer Mode.
The mapping looks correct but output goes to the wrong place
Read the mapping literally. A visible Discord name such as #general is not a valid substitute for its numeric channel ID. Compare each left-hand Minecraft name with the channel that Minecraft actually uses, then compare each right-hand value with the ID copied from Discord. Remember that the first pair is the main channel.

Linking commands or codes fail
- Run
/discordsrv linkagain to obtain the current instructions rather than reusing an old code. - Send the code to the DiscordSRV bot account specified by those instructions.
- Use
/discordsrv linkedto check the result from Minecraft. - If linking is enforced, verify that the player also belongs to any required Discord server and holds any required subscriber role.
- Inspect the server log and Discord permissions if the bot cannot receive the linking message.
Reload appears to do nothing
/discordsrv reload only affects settings that support reloading. For a change documented as restart-dependent, stop and restart the server, then verify the result in the startup log. This distinction is especially important after changing the join requirement in linking.yml.
Use the debugger for message-flow problems
When ordinary checks do not identify the fault, use /discordsrv debugger with the relevant debug categories. Select categories that match the symptom: message flow for chat delivery, group synchronization for role or group state, presence for online-status behavior, and voice for voice-related behavior. Capture the resulting information alongside the time of the test and the channel involved so staff can correlate it with the server log.
Pre-launch checklist
- The server runs Paper, Spigot, CraftBukkit or another Bukkit-API implementation.
- The DiscordSRV JAR is in the active server’s
pluginsdirectory. - A restart created
plugins/DiscordSRVand its configuration files. - The Discord application has User Install disabled and Install Link set to None.
- The privileged Gateway Intents required by DiscordSRV are enabled.
- The bot is in the intended Discord server and can read and send in each mapped channel.
config.ymlmaps Minecraft channel names to numeric Discord channel IDs.- The main channel is the first channel pair in the mapping.
/discord,/discordsrv linkand/discordsrv linkedproduce the expected responses.- If linking is mandatory,
linking.ymlcontainsEnabled: trueand the server has been restarted. - Staff can use the administrative commands they need, including the debugger, without giving ordinary players unnecessary access.
What a successful setup looks like
A complete installation has four working layers: the plugin loads from the server’s plugins directory; the Discord bot connects with its required intents; each Minecraft channel points to a numeric Discord channel ID where the bot can read and send; and players can complete the optional or required account-link flow. Test all four layers with a real message and a test player before announcing the integration to the wider community.
