Enable DNSSEC on a current BIND 9 authoritative server with the automated Key and Signing Policy (KASP): add dnssec-policy default; to the zone, use dynamic DNS or inline signing, reload with rndc reconfig, then publish the active key’s DS record at the parent. BIND will generate keys, sign records, and maintain rollovers; the delegation becomes fully trusted only after the parent publishes a matching DS record.

What DNSSEC changes on an authoritative BIND server

DNSSEC adds origin authentication and integrity protection to DNS data. A validating resolver can determine whether an answer really came from the zone’s signing keys and whether a negative answer is authenticated, rather than merely accepting an unsigned response.

A successfully signed zone contains the original resource records plus DNSKEY records, RRSIG signatures, and authenticated denial-of-existence records such as NSEC or NSEC3. The chain of trust starts at the parent zone: the parent publishes a DS record that identifies a child DNSKEY. Without that DS, the child may be signing locally but validating resolvers cannot establish trust from the parent delegation.

Modern BIND uses KASP, configured with dnssec-policy, instead of requiring you to script every key and signature operation. The built-in default policy is the practical starting point for a normal authoritative zone. The policy-managed method is designed for dynamic DNS or inline signing; it is not a switch that can be dropped into an entirely static, manually signed workflow.

Prerequisites and checks before changing the zone

  • A supported BIND 9 authoritative installation. ISC states that all BIND 9 versions are DNSSEC-capable, but use a release supported by your operating system and maintenance policy.
  • A writable zone-management location. BIND must be able to create and retain its managed key material and signed-zone state.
  • Parent-zone access. You need the registrar, registry, or parent DNS operator to publish and later update the DS record.
  • DNSSEC-capable secondaries. Every authoritative server that can answer for the zone must understand DNSSEC records and transfer or serve the signed data correctly.
  • An accurate clock. Run NTP or another reliable time source on every authoritative server. Signature validity depends on time, and clock skew can make otherwise correct answers fail validation.
  • EDNS0 end to end. DNSSEC responses are larger than unsigned responses. Firewalls, load balancers, packet filters, and any DNS proxies must pass EDNS0 and support larger UDP responses and TCP fallback.
  • A backup and a change window. Preserve the unsigned zone and configuration before editing them, and make sure you can inspect logs and query an authoritative server directly.

Choose the BIND signing model

For most new deployments, use KASP with the built-in policy and inline signing. The following distinctions matter when an existing zone is dynamic, static, or already managed by scripts.

Approach Zone update model Key and signature work Parent coordination When it fits
dnssec-policy default; with inline signing BIND keeps the unsigned source zone and a separate signed version Automated by KASP DS publication is still required; KSK and CSK changes need parent action Normal authoritative zones, especially when you want BIND to maintain signing state
dnssec-policy default; on a dynamically updated zone Dynamic DNS updates are accepted and BIND signs the resulting data Automated by KASP Same parent DS requirement Zones already using dynamic updates
Manual keys and manual signing Operator-controlled files or signing jobs Operator must handle generation, publication, timing, and rollovers Operator must coordinate every relevant DS change Special cases that require explicit manual control

The official BIND documentation describes the policy-managed method as the recommended, fully automated way to sign and maintain ordinary zones. Do not combine manual key-management scripts with a policy that is already managing the same zone unless you have a deliberate, documented design for that interaction.

Configure an authoritative zone with the default policy

1. Keep an unsigned source zone

With inline signing, the file named by file remains the unsigned source that you administer. BIND maintains a separate signed representation, often visible with a .signed filename. Continue making normal zone edits through the source or through dynamic updates; do not edit BIND’s generated signed copy as if it were the source of truth.

2. Add the policy to the zone block

A minimal authoritative configuration is:

zone "example.com" IN {
    type primary;
    file "db/example.com.db";
    dnssec-policy default;
    inline-signing yes;
};

type primary; identifies this server as the primary for the zone, and file names the unsigned source file. dnssec-policy default; tells BIND to create and maintain the signing keys and signatures. inline-signing yes; is shown explicitly so the separate unsigned and signed views are clear; the current default-policy workflow uses inline signing. Ensure the directory containing the source and managed signing data is writable by the BIND service account and protected from unauthorized access.

3. Match the update model

If the zone receives dynamic DNS updates, BIND can sign those updates under the policy. If it is a file-based zone, inline signing supplies the managed signed view. Do not treat dnssec-policy as compatible with an unrelated manual-signing job that rewrites the same signed data.

4. Reload the configuration

After checking the edited configuration and zone data with your normal BIND validation procedure, ask the running server to reload it:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
rndc reconfig

Watch the BIND log while the policy initializes. Key generation, policy state, permission failures, and zone-loading errors are easier to diagnose before you involve the parent zone. A successful reload does not mean the delegation is already secure; it means the authoritative server has accepted the configuration and can begin signing.

Use a custom KASP policy only when you need its controls

The default policy avoids many timing and rollover decisions. Define an explicit policy when you have a documented requirement for a particular algorithm, key roles, key lifetimes, TTLs, signature validity periods, propagation delays, or safety margins. Those settings interact: shortening a lifetime without allowing for publication and caching can create validation failures.

An illustrative policy from the BIND DNSSEC guide uses ECDSA P-256 with SHA-256, a 365-day KSK lifetime, a 60-day ZSK lifetime, and 600-second TTL values for DNSKEY, zone data, and the parent DS. These are example values, not universal requirements. Select values that match your parent operator’s DS process, cache behavior, outage procedures, and compliance requirements, then document the reason for each value.

Keep the policy stable while BIND is executing a rollover. Changing algorithms, lifetimes, or timing parameters in the middle of an operation can leave you with keys that are published locally but not represented at the parent. Plan a controlled change, confirm the current state, and make the parent update part of the same operational procedure.

Confirm that BIND is actually signing

Query the authoritative server directly rather than relying only on a recursive resolver. Replace the server address and zone name with your own values.

Check the DNSKEY RRset

dig @authoritative-server example.com DNSKEY +dnssec

The answer should include one or more DNSKEY records and an RRSIG covering the DNSKEY RRset. If the query reaches a secondary, make sure that server is serving the current signed data rather than an older unsigned copy.

Check an ordinary record

dig @authoritative-server example.com A +dnssec

Use any RR type that exists in your zone. The response should contain the requested RRset and a corresponding RRSIG. A signature on DNSKEY alone is not enough; ordinary answers must be signed too.

Check authenticated denial of existence

Query a name that you deliberately know does not exist, such as a random label under the zone:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
dig @authoritative-server does-not-exist.example.com A +dnssec

Inspect the response for authenticated denial data, normally NSEC or NSEC3, and its signature. This proves that the server can authenticate negative answers, not just positive records.

Validate from outside the authoritative path

Use an independent DNSSEC-validating resolver or a DNSSEC diagnostic service such as DNSViz. Compare the result with direct queries. A direct answer can look correct while the parent DS is missing, stale, or inconsistent; independent validation tests the complete chain from the parent to your server.

Publish the DS record at the parent

The child zone’s active signing key supplies the data for the DS record. Extract the DS information using the BIND tooling or the parent operator’s documented method, then submit it through the registrar or parent DNS service. The submission must identify the active key’s key tag, algorithm, digest type, and digest exactly.

Before submitting, compare the DS key tag and digest with the DNSKEY that BIND is currently publishing. A DS for an old key, a typo in the digest, or a key tag that belongs to another DNSKEY produces a broken chain even though the child is signing correctly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Query the authoritative server for the current DNSKEY RRset and identify the key designated for the key-signing role or combined signing role.
  2. Generate or obtain the matching DS fields from that active key using your BIND or parent-provider workflow.
  3. Enter the DS values at the parent-zone operator without changing their case, numbers, algorithm, or digest type.
  4. Wait for the parent to publish the DS and for parent and child secondary servers and recursive caches to converge.
  5. Run an independent DNSSEC validation and confirm that the parent DS points to the DNSKEY served by the child.

Until the DS is visible at the parent and caches have aged out, treat the deployment as incomplete. A child can legitimately serve DNSKEY and RRSIG records before the delegation is trusted; that intermediate state is why testing must include the parent.

Operate key rollovers without breaking validation

ZSK rollovers

With dnssec-policy, BIND automates zone-signing-key rollovers. It publishes the necessary keys and signatures according to policy timing, so routine ZSK changes do not require you to submit a new DS for every event.

KSK and CSK rollovers

Key-signing-key and combined-signing-key rollovers involve the parent. A new child key is not trusted merely because BIND generated it; the corresponding DS must be published at the parent. You can coordinate this manually with the parent operator or configure BIND’s parental-agent and checkds workflow when your environment supports it.

When acknowledging a parent event manually, the documented command form is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
rndc dnssec -checkds -key <tag> published <zone>.
rndc dnssec -checkds -key <tag> withdrawn <zone>.

Use published only after the parent DS is actually published and visible, and use withdrawn only after the old DS has been removed and the parent has converged. Replace the tag and zone with the real key tag and fully qualified zone name.

Forcing a rollover

A forced rollover is an operational change, not a routine health check:

rndc dnssec -rollover -key <tag> <zone>.

Confirm why the rollover is needed, record the current key and parent DS state, and be prepared to complete the parent update. Do not change the DNSSEC policy while another rollover is in progress.

Protect managed key files

Private keys and BIND’s managed signing state must remain available and readable by the BIND service, while remaining inaccessible to unnecessary users. The BIND Administrator Reference Manual warns that missing or inaccessible key files halt key management. If that condition persists, signatures can eventually expire. Include the key directory in backups, monitor permissions and disk space, and do not restore an obsolete key set over a newer active state without a recovery plan.

Troubleshoot the failures that matter most

Symptom Likely cause What to check or correct
Direct DNSKEY query has no DNSKEY or no covering RRSIG The policy did not initialize, the zone failed to load, or BIND cannot write managed state Read the BIND log, verify the zone block and directory permissions, confirm that rndc reconfig completed, and check for missing key files.
Positive answers have no RRSIG You queried an unsigned view, a secondary is stale, or signing has stopped Query each authoritative server directly, inspect the signed view, and verify that secondaries support and serve DNSSEC data.
Negative answers lack NSEC or NSEC3 The response is coming from an unsigned or incomplete view Repeat the nonexistent-name query against the primary and each secondary, then inspect policy and transfer status.
Validating resolvers return SERVFAIL while direct queries look good Missing or incorrect parent DS, expired signatures, clock skew, or a broken secondary Compare the parent DS key tag and digest with the active child DNSKEY, check time synchronization, inspect signature validity, and validate from an independent resolver.
Failures appear only for large responses EDNS0 is blocked, fragmented UDP is mishandled, or TCP fallback is unavailable Check firewalls, load balancers, and packet filters. Preserve EDNS0 and allow DNSSEC-sized responses and TCP fallback.
A rollover remains stuck The parent event was not acknowledged, the DS was not published or withdrawn, or policy was changed mid-rollover Stop making unrelated policy changes, establish the actual parent state, then use the appropriate checkds event or complete the parent update.
Signatures eventually expire after an outage BIND could not access key files or could not run its signing and rollover management Restore the correct managed key files and permissions, verify clock accuracy, and confirm that policy management resumes before relying on the zone.

Operational practices for a durable DNSSEC deployment

  • Monitor both child and parent. Alert on missing RRSIG records, expired signatures, disappearing DNSKEY data, and a parent DS that no longer matches the active key.
  • Test every authoritative server. A single unsigned or stale secondary can cause intermittent validation failures depending on which address a resolver reaches.
  • Keep time and storage healthy. NTP failures, full disks, changed ownership, or deleted key files can stop signing without changing the zone’s visible configuration.
  • Plan parent changes as DNS changes. DS publication and withdrawal are subject to caching and propagation. Schedule enough overlap for validators to see the required old and new data during a rollover.
  • Preserve EDNS0. DNSSEC increases response size and traffic; a network that worked for unsigned DNS can fail once DNSKEY, RRSIG, and denial records are added.
  • Document the source of truth. Record whether updates are file-based or dynamic, where the unsigned source lives, where BIND keeps managed keys, who controls the parent DS, and which policy values are intentional.

When manual DNSSEC management is justified

Manual key generation and signing can be appropriate for a tightly controlled special case, an integration that cannot use dynamic DNS or inline signing, or an environment with an external key-management process. It requires you to schedule key publication, signature refresh, rollover overlap, parent DS changes, secure backups, and recovery from a failed signer. The operational burden is substantially higher because none of those steps is automatically coordinated by KASP.

For an ordinary authoritative BIND zone, start with dnssec-policy default;, inline signing or dynamic updates, and a documented parent DS procedure. Move to a custom policy only for a stated algorithm or timing requirement, and choose fully manual management only when the deployment’s constraints make policy-managed signing unsuitable.
