To use Vagrant on an Ubuntu VPS, the server must expose hardware-virtualization capabilities to the guest environment, and you must install a Vagrant provider that the VPS can actually run. For most Ubuntu servers, that means KVM/libvirt: verify virtualization with kvm-ok, install QEMU/KVM and libvirt, add your administrator account to the libvirt group, install Vagrant’s vagrant-libvirt plugin, and start a box published for libvirt. VirtualBox is a separate provider and requires its own installation.
Need a server to try this on? Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with NVMe storage, full root access and a 14-day free trial.
The normal lifecycle is vagrant init, vagrant up, vagrant ssh, followed by vagrant halt or vagrant destroy. Provider choice also determines which boxes you can use: a VirtualBox box is not automatically usable with libvirt.

What Vagrant is doing on a VPS
Vagrant is a multi-provider tool for building and managing virtual machines. On an Ubuntu VPS, it acts as the automation layer while a provider performs the actual virtualization. The provider creates the VM, allocates its virtual hardware, connects its network, and boots the operating system contained in a Vagrant box.
That distinction matters more on a VPS than on a personal workstation. A VPS is already a virtual or hosted server, so your hosting company must expose the virtualization extensions needed for another VM. Ubuntu packages can install successfully even when nested virtualization is unavailable; the failure appears later when the provider tries to create a guest.

Vagrant boxes are provider-specific archives. A box built for VirtualBox is not a universal disk image that can be passed to libvirt, VMware, or another provider. Select the provider first, then select a box published for that provider.
Check the VPS before installing anything
Verify KVM capability
Ubuntu Server documentation recommends checking the host’s virtualization extensions with:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
kvm-ok
Run it from the Ubuntu VPS. A successful result confirms that the operating system can see the KVM capabilities required by the libvirt path. A failure is a host-capability problem, not a Vagrantfile syntax problem.
On a hosted VPS, ask the provider whether KVM or nested virtualization is exposed when kvm-ok fails. Changing the box name, adding a Vagrant plugin, or repeating vagrant up cannot create virtualization features that the host has withheld.
Confirm administrative access and a workable network
- Use an account that can run
sudofor package installation and service setup. - Make sure the VPS provider permits the guest network mode you need. NAT is usually available; a directly reachable guest generally requires a bridge and provider cooperation.
- Check both the Ubuntu firewall and the VPS provider’s firewall controls before exposing a service from the guest.
Decide whether this is development or production
Canonical describes its Ubuntu Vagrant boxes as local-development artifacts, not production deployments. They are useful for repeatable experiments, configuration work, and disposable environments. Do not treat a public Ubuntu Vagrant box as a production image merely because it boots on your VPS. For production, use an image and deployment process intended for that purpose, with a documented update, backup, access-control, and recovery plan.
Choose the provider
| Provider path | What must be available on the VPS | Installation and selection | Box requirement | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| libvirt/KVM | Virtualization extensions visible to Ubuntu; confirm with kvm-ok |
Install qemu-kvm and libvirt-daemon-system, add the managing user to libvirt, install vagrant-libvirt, then use vagrant up --provider=libvirt |
A box published for libvirt | Ubuntu server environments and VPS workflows where KVM is exposed |
| VirtualBox | A VPS environment capable of running VirtualBox and its kernel modules | Install VirtualBox separately; Vagrant has built-in provider support | A box published for VirtualBox | Environments deliberately configured for VirtualBox |
| Another provider | The provider’s own host capabilities and installation | Install the provider and any required Vagrant plugin, then select it explicitly | A box and capabilities matching that provider | VPS setups with a specific provider requirement |
libvirt/KVM is generally the server-oriented choice on Ubuntu because it uses the Linux virtualization stack. It is not automatically available on every VPS plan, however. VirtualBox is not a fallback that bypasses missing host virtualization; it still needs its own host installation and kernel support.
Install Vagrant with libvirt/KVM
The following sequence installs the core packages on Ubuntu. Run it as an administrator or prefix each package command with sudo.
- Refresh package metadata.
sudo apt-get update - Install QEMU/KVM, the system libvirt daemon, and Vagrant.
sudo apt-get install qemu-kvm libvirt-daemon-system vagrant - Add the account that will run Vagrant to the libvirt group.
sudo usermod -aG libvirt "$USER"Start a new login session after changing group membership, or use the equivalent session-refresh method for your shell. Without the new group membership, Vagrant may be unable to communicate with libvirt even though the packages are installed.

vagrant plugin list
The provider plugin does not replace KVM or libvirt. It connects Vagrant to the libvirt installation, so all three layers must be present: host virtualization support, the Ubuntu QEMU/libvirt packages, and the Vagrant plugin.
Select a libvirt-compatible box
Use a box whose published provider is libvirt. If you already know its identifier, create a project directory and initialize it:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →mkdir vagrant-project
cd vagrant-project
vagrant init YOUR_LIBVIRT_BOX
The identifier in this example must be replaced with the actual libvirt box name you have chosen. Do not assume that a familiar Ubuntu box supports every provider. Check the box’s provider listing before initialization or download.
You can also inspect boxes already stored locally:
vagrant box list
If a box is available for several providers, Vagrant still needs to select the archive matching the provider you intend to run. A VirtualBox archive cannot be made into a libvirt archive by changing the Vagrantfile.
Start and access the VM
From the directory containing the Vagrantfile, start the libvirt machine explicitly:
vagrant up --provider=libvirt
On the first run, Vagrant downloads the box if it is not cached, configures libvirt, creates the VM, and applies the Vagrantfile. Subsequent starts normally reuse the downloaded box and existing VM.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →When the machine is running, connect over Vagrant-managed SSH:
vagrant ssh
Canonical documents the default synced directory as the project directory on the host, ./, mounted at /vagrant in the guest. Files placed beside the Vagrantfile can therefore be made available inside the VM at that path.

VirtualBox on an Ubuntu VPS
Vagrant’s VirtualBox provider is built in, but VirtualBox itself must be installed separately. Canonical’s documented example is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vagrant virtualbox
vagrant init ubuntu/jammy64
vagrant up
vagrant ssh
This sequence is appropriate only if the VPS can run VirtualBox and load its kernel modules. The provider will report an installation error when VirtualBox is absent. HashiCorp’s documented compatibility list includes VirtualBox versions from 4.0.x through 7.2.x; that is a compatibility range subject to change, not a performance guarantee.
The ubuntu/jammy64 example is tied to the provider used by that setup. If you switch to libvirt, select a libvirt-compatible box instead of assuming the same box archive will work unchanged.
Configure networking deliberately
NAT is the normal libvirt default
Ubuntu’s libvirt setup uses NAT by default. The guest can normally make outbound connections through the host, while the guest’s private address is not automatically reachable as a directly addressed machine from outside the VPS.
NAT is suitable for many development tasks: installing packages, running a test application, or accessing a service from inside the guest. It does not by itself publish that service to the internet.

If external hosts must connect directly to the guest, configure a bridged network rather than relying on the default NAT network. The exact bridge configuration depends on the VPS’s network interface and the provider’s virtualization controls.
Before choosing a bridge, verify all of the following:

- The VPS provider permits bridged or additional guest networking.
- The guest has an address and route appropriate for the bridge.
- The service listens on the guest interface, not only on
127.0.0.1. - The Ubuntu firewall allows the service port.
- The VPS provider’s firewall and any upstream security rules allow the same port.
A bridge does not override firewall policy. If the guest is running but unreachable, test the network mode, the guest’s listening address, the host firewall, and the VPS firewall separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesMake provider selection explicit in scripts
When a project may be used on more than one machine, keep the provider choice visible in the command or project documentation:
vagrant up --provider=libvirt
This avoids an accidental attempt to use a default provider that is not installed on the VPS. It also makes failures easier to interpret: a provider error points to the provider layer, while a box error points to compatibility or availability.
Keep the Vagrantfile focused on configuration that the selected provider supports. Provider-specific networking, storage, and machine settings should not be copied between VirtualBox and libvirt without checking their documentation and box capabilities.
Troubleshoot common failures
kvm-ok fails
Cause: The VPS is not exposing the required KVM virtualization extensions, or the host cannot make them available to the nested guest.
Recommended Free Tools
Fix: Ask the VPS provider whether KVM or nested virtualization is enabled for the server. Reinstalling Vagrant or changing the vagrant up syntax cannot supply missing host capabilities.
“Provider not found” or a provider plugin error
Cause: Vagrant cannot find the provider executable or the provider plugin required by the project.
Fix: For libvirt, confirm that QEMU/KVM and libvirt-daemon-system are installed, that your current login belongs to libvirt, and that vagrant-libvirt appears in vagrant plugin list. Start with vagrant up --provider=libvirt so Vagrant does not select another provider.

Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The box does not support the selected provider
Cause: The box archive was published for VirtualBox or another provider, not libvirt.
Fix: Choose a box whose provider listing explicitly includes the provider you selected. Do not try to repair the mismatch by editing only the Vagrantfile.
The VM starts but cannot be reached
Cause: NAT is hiding the guest from external hosts, the guest service is bound to the wrong address, or a host/VPS firewall blocks traffic.
Fix: Identify whether the project expects NAT or a bridge. Check the guest’s listening address and local firewall, then inspect the Ubuntu host firewall and the VPS provider’s network rules. A running VM is not evidence that its service is externally routable.
SSH reports a host-key warning after rebuilding
Cause: The VM was destroyed and recreated, so its SSH host key changed while the old key remains in the client’s known-hosts file.
Fix: First verify that the machine was actually recreated and that you are connecting to the intended VPS and guest. Only then remove the stale key entry using your SSH client’s normal known-hosts management, and reconnect through vagrant ssh.
The package install succeeds but vagrant up still fails
Cause: Installation success proves only that Ubuntu accepted the packages. It does not prove that the VPS exposes nested virtualization, that the current session has the new group membership, or that the box matches the provider.
Fix: Recheck the sequence in this order: run kvm-ok, start a fresh login after the libvirt group change, verify the plugin with vagrant plugin list, confirm the box provider, and rerun vagrant up --provider=libvirt.
A safe operating pattern for a VPS
- Test
kvm-okbefore committing to a nested VM workflow. - Choose libvirt/KVM or VirtualBox based on what the VPS can expose, not on which command is most familiar.
- Install only the provider stack you intend to use and select it explicitly.
- Use a box published for that provider.
- Start with NAT, then move to a bridge only when direct guest reachability is required and supported.
- Treat Canonical’s public Ubuntu boxes as development inputs, not production server images.
- Destroy disposable guests when finished and keep important data outside the VM or in a separately managed backup system.
Bottom line
Vagrant works on an Ubuntu VPS when three conditions line up: the VPS exposes virtualization extensions, the matching provider is installed, and the selected box was built for that provider. For the usual Ubuntu server case, validate KVM with kvm-ok, install QEMU/KVM and libvirt, add your account to libvirt, install vagrant-libvirt, and run a libvirt-compatible box with vagrant up --provider=libvirt. Keep NAT unless you genuinely need a bridged guest, and do not use Canonical’s development boxes as a substitute for a production deployment image.
