Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by identifying the console the game was made for. Nintendo DS and DSi games need a DS emulator such as melonDS, while Nintendo 3DS games need a 3DS emulator such as Azahar. Install the current build intended for your handheld, provide only the system files that emulator requires, import your own supported game backups, then configure both screens and touch input before testing a save.
1. Identify whether the game is for DS, DSi or 3DS
The original system determines the entire setup. A Nintendo DS or DSi title follows the DS emulation path; a Nintendo 3DS title follows the 3DS path. The two systems have different hardware, file formats, firmware needs and emulator projects, so installing one emulator does not make the other system’s games work.

Check the original release
- DS or DSi: Use a DS emulator. The official melonDS FAQ documents melonDS’s DS-mode configuration and firmware workflow.
- 3DS: Use a 3DS emulator. Azahar’s official README describes it as “an open-source 3DS emulator project based on Citra.”
A Nintendo 3DS console itself plays almost all Nintendo DS and DSi games. Nintendo notes an exception for some titles that depended on an accessory inserted into the DS’s Game Boy Advance slot. That backward-compatibility statement applies to Nintendo hardware, not to third-party emulators; an emulator’s support depends on its own implementation, version and the handheld running it.
If you are unsure, check the cartridge label, the original box or the game’s official release information. Do not choose an emulator based only on the fact that the handheld has two screens.

2. Choose a current emulator build for your handheld
| Game system | Project to investigate | System files | Game files | What varies by handheld |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DS/DSi | melonDS or a current port based on it | Required for the documented firmware-boot workflow; see the melonDS-specific section below | Use a format supported by the selected build | Android interface, controls, screen layout, file permissions and performance |
| 3DS | Azahar | Follow the current project instructions for the Android build | Decrypted .cci/.3ds, .cia, .cxi/.ncch, or homebrew .3dsx as documented |
Distribution channel, storage picker, controls, graphics options and performance |
DS: use the build’s own instructions
Consult the official melonDS project material and select the build or port intended for your operating system. The melonDS FAQ reviewed for this guide describes desktop melonDS, not every Android port. Menu names, file locations and whether a port can boot a game directly may differ. Treat its BIOS and firmware instructions as melonDS-specific rather than a universal requirement for every DS emulator.
3DS: install Azahar from a current project channel
Azahar’s README lists Android distribution choices and recommends Google Play for most users. It also describes alternative installation routes. Check the live README when you install because release versions, package variants and distribution channels can change. Confirm that the package is the Android build and that it supports your handheld’s processor and Android version.
Official desktop documentation cannot guarantee the same interface, controls or speed on an Android dual-screen handheld. A device may expose different graphics backends, controller mappings or storage permissions even when it runs the same project.

3. Create storage locations on Android
Azahar’s Android setup uses two selections during first launch: a user-data folder and a game folder. Either can be on internal storage or on an SD card. The exact picker wording and sequence can change with Android and the app version, so follow the prompts shown by the current build instead of relying on a fixed absolute path.

- Open the emulator and approve the Android file-access request.
- When prompted, choose a user-data folder. Pick a location you can find again and that has enough free space for configuration, saves and emulator data.
- Choose a separate game folder, or a clearly named subfolder, for your personal backups.
- Use the system file picker to grant access to each selected folder. If you use an SD card, select the card’s actual folder rather than assuming the app can browse the whole card automatically.
- Keep a backup of saves and configuration in a second location before changing storage or reinstalling the app.
A removable card is optional. Check the handheld’s supported card type and capacity before buying or formatting one. Android storage behavior can change between versions, so avoid guides that promise one universal directory such as a particular /Android/data path.
4. Add legally obtained game backups
Use backups you are entitled to possess and that were prepared through a method supported in your jurisdiction. Do not download commercial games from unofficial sources. The emulator projects do not turn an unlawfully obtained file into a lawful one, and copyright and circumvention rules differ by location.
Azahar formats
Azahar’s documentation lists these usable categories:
| Format | Use | Important condition |
|---|---|---|
.cci or .3ds |
Decrypted 3DS game image | Encrypted game files are not supported. |
.cia |
Decrypted installable title package | Use only a personal backup prepared in a lawful manner. |
.cxi or .ncch |
Decrypted title or component image | The exact behavior can depend on the current build. |
.3dsx |
Homebrew application | Intended for homebrew, not a general commercial-game format. |
Azahar states that a 3DS is required to prepare personal backups and deliberately does not publish a dumping guide because legal requirements vary by location. Follow the current project documentation and your local law. Place the resulting files in the game folder you selected, then use the emulator’s library scan or file browser to add them.

DS files
Use the format accepted by your chosen DS build and keep each backup in the folder you selected for games. If a title does not appear, check the extension, storage permission and whether the build expects a library rescan or a manual “open” command. Do not assume that a file accepted by one DS port will be accepted by every other port.
5. Configure DS system files when melonDS requires them
The melonDS FAQ describes a firmware-boot setup that uses dumps from your own DS hardware. It lists the following files:
| File | Size listed by the melonDS FAQ | Purpose in the documented setup |
|---|---|---|
bios9.bin |
4 KB | ARM9 BIOS |
bios7.bin |
16 KB | ARM7 BIOS |
| Firmware dump | 128 KB, 256 KB or 512 KB depending on its type | DS firmware used by the emulator |
- Obtain the required dumps from hardware you own using a method permitted where you live.
- Open melonDS’s settings and go to Emu Settings → DS-mode.
- Use the file selectors shown there to point to
bios9.bin,bios7.binand the firmware dump. - Save the configuration and restart the emulator if the build asks you to do so.
- Test a title. If melonDS offers direct game boot, the FAQ recommends leaving that enabled when using DSi/3DS DS-mode firmware.
These paths and labels describe melonDS’s documented configuration. An Android port may rename the menu, bundle components differently or support direct boot without the same files. Verify the current FAQ for the exact version you installed rather than copying a desktop directory from an old guide.
DSi mode is a separate requirement
DSi emulation requires additional DSi BIOS, firmware and NAND components in the melonDS documentation. Do not substitute ordinary DS BIOS files or assume that a game requiring DSi features will work after adding only bios7.bin and bios9.bin. Configure DSi components only when your build supports that mode and you have lawful dumps.

6. Set up both screens, touch and physical controls
Begin with a layout that keeps both displays visible. This makes it easier to follow a game that puts maps, inventory or status information on the lower screen while showing action on the upper screen. On a small handheld, a stacked arrangement may be more readable; on a wide device, side-by-side screens may make physical controls easier to reach. The best choice depends on aspect ratio and how much bezel the app adds.
Make the lower screen usable
- Confirm that touch input is directed to the lower display rather than the entire emulator window.
- Tap menus, maps and virtual buttons during the first launch, not just the title screen.
- If your handheld has a stylus, map or use it only if the device and app expose stylus input correctly; otherwise use finger touch or a mapped pointer.
- Check whether the app lets you resize, rotate or reposition each screen without hiding important controls.
Map controls and screen focus
Map the handheld’s buttons to the console’s face buttons, shoulder buttons, start/select functions and directional input. If the emulator exposes a screen-swap, screen-focus or one-screen mode, assign it to a button that is easy to press without interrupting gameplay. A practical fallback is to keep the full dual-screen layout for normal play and use one-screen focus temporarily for text-heavy menus or games that need a larger view.
There is no universal setting name or control mapping shared by every Azahar release, melonDS port and dual-screen device. Open the current app’s display and input settings, identify the action by its result rather than by a menu label, and test it in an actual game.

| Layout goal | Advantages | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Both screens visible | Best for games that constantly use the map or status screen | Each image is smaller, especially on compact handhelds |
| Upper screen enlarged with lower screen minimized | Improves action-game visibility while retaining quick reference information | Small text and touch targets may be harder to use |
| One-screen focus with a switch button | Largest readable image and a useful fallback for menus | You must switch views to see the other screen |
| Side-by-side or rotated presentation | Can match a wide device or a particular game’s orientation | May require different grip and control placement |
7. Run a short first-launch check
Test one title before importing a large library. This separates an emulator or permissions problem from a game-specific compatibility issue.
Best Value

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Verify that the game appears after the library scan or opens through the file browser.
- Start it and confirm that neither screen remains permanently black and that there is no missing-file message.
- Press every mapped face, shoulder and menu button.
- Touch several locations on the lower screen, including a menu item and an in-game control.
- Use the screen-switch or focus control, if available, and return to the normal dual-screen layout.
- Create an in-game save, close the emulator normally, reopen it and confirm that the save is still present.
Compatibility and performance are device-, game- and version-dependent. The project documentation does not establish one minimum hardware specification or a universal speed guarantee for every dual-screen handheld.
8. Troubleshoot by symptom
The game is not listed
- Confirm that the emulator has permission to read the selected game folder.
- Run the library scan again or open the file manually.
- Check that the extension is one the build documents as supported.
- On Android, revisit the system picker if you moved the folder or changed the SD card.
Azahar reports an unsupported or encrypted file
Azahar documents support for decrypted .cci/.3ds, .cia, .cxi/.ncch and homebrew .3dsx. It does not support encrypted game files. Recheck how your personal backup was prepared; renaming an extension does not decrypt a file.
melonDS shows a BIOS or firmware error
Return to Emu Settings → DS-mode and verify each selected file, its size and the spelling of its filename. The listed 4 KB, 16 KB and firmware-size values are the melonDS FAQ’s figures for its documented workflow. If you are using an unofficial port, read that port’s instructions before copying desktop paths or assuming the same files are required.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The lower screen does not respond to touch
- Check that touch input is enabled and assigned to the lower display.
- Tap the emulator’s screen area rather than an Android overlay or bezel.
- Try another layout, then test the same input in a game menu.
- If the device has a hardware mouse mode, disable it or map its pointer according to the app’s input settings.
The screens are too small or awkward
Change the arrangement, scale or orientation in the display settings. Keep a screen-switch shortcut so you can enlarge one display for text and return to both screens for normal play. Exact controls differ between app versions.
Saves disappear after moving folders
Restore the original user-data folder, check that Android still grants the app access, and look for the save in the emulator’s current save directory. Back up saves before changing the user-data location or reinstalling. A game folder and a user-data folder are separate selections in Azahar’s Android workflow.
Performance is inconsistent
Confirm that you installed the correct build for the handheld, then try the graphics and frame-pacing options exposed by that version. Close background apps, test internal storage against the SD card if loading is erratic, and compare with another title. Do not treat one game’s result as a guarantee for the rest of the library; performance varies by game, device and emulator version.
9. Keep the setup maintainable
- Record which emulator build, storage folders and controller profile work for each system.
- Back up saves before updating, moving to an SD card or changing Android permissions.
- Read the current Azahar README or melonDS documentation before replacing a working build; installation channels and menu labels can change.
- Keep DS and 3DS backups in clearly named folders so you do not try to open a 3DS file in a DS emulator or vice versa.
- Preserve the original folder access through Android’s picker after an update rather than assuming the app can rediscover it.
Quick decision checklist
- Is the game a DS/DSi title or a 3DS title?
- Did you install a current emulator build intended for your handheld?
- Did you select accessible user-data and game folders?
- Are your backups personal, legally obtained and in a documented format?
- If using melonDS’s firmware-boot workflow, did you configure the required BIOS and firmware files?
- Can you see both screens, touch the lower screen and switch focus when needed?
- Did one title pass the launch, control, touch and save test?
Once those checks pass, add games gradually and keep the known-good configuration backed up. DS and 3DS emulation remain separate workflows even on a handheld designed to show both screens together.
