To try a Nintendo Switch game before paying, find its listing in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo’s current games-with-free-demos catalogue, open the product page, and select the demo download option when one is offered. If you decide to buy, return to that same listing, choose the full-game purchase option, complete checkout, and let the console download the digital game.
Demos are title-specific and can disappear or change. A listing marked Game Trial is different: it is the full game for a limited period and, in Nintendo’s Americas flow, requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.

The shortest path from demo to full game
- Open Nintendo eShop on your Switch and search for the game, or browse Nintendo’s games-with-free-demos catalogue.
- Open the game’s product page and look for a demo download option. If no demo option appears, that title is not currently offering one through the listing you are viewing.
- Download and launch the demo. Read the listing carefully if it uses the term Game Trial; that is a time-limited full-game offer, not an ordinary demo.
- When you are ready to purchase, return to the same product page, select the full digital game, and follow the checkout prompts.
- Keep the Switch connected to the internet and make sure the console has enough free storage for the game’s listed size.
The catalogue and eShop screens change as publishers add or remove offers, so use the current product page as the final authority for availability, price, download buttons, and trial terms.
How to check whether a game has a free demo
Use Nintendo’s current catalogue
Nintendo maintains a US page specifically for games that offer demos. Its wording is aimed at the try-before-you-buy decision: “Download a demo to try before you buy.” The page is a changing catalogue rather than a promise that every listed title will remain available indefinitely. Select a game from the catalogue to reach its eShop information, then verify the offer on the product page before downloading.
#1 Best Overall
- eCash - Nintendo eShop Gift Card $100
The catalogue is US-facing. A game, demo, price, or button shown there may not appear in another country’s eShop, because digital availability and payment options are tied to the account’s region. If you use a non-US account, search the title directly in your local eShop and rely on the listing shown there.
Search directly in Nintendo eShop
On the Switch, open Nintendo eShop and use its search function to enter the game’s title. Select the correct result, paying attention to the edition and platform information on the page. Product pages can contain several purchase choices, so do not assume that seeing the game’s name means a demo is available.
Read the product page before downloading
Look for an explicit demo download choice. Nintendo’s official redownload guidance says that most demos can later be found in eShop and downloaded again, but the exact wording of the first download button can vary by title and interface version. If the page offers only a price or a purchase button, there is no demo option presented for that listing at that moment.

Demos can be removed, replaced, or limited to particular regions, and Nintendo’s catalogue does not establish a universal demo policy for every Switch game. Check the listing each time you want to download rather than relying on an old screenshot or a previous visit.
Download the demo step by step
- Open Nintendo eShop. Start eShop on the Switch and make sure the Nintendo Account you intend to use is signed in.
- Find the game. Search by title or open the game from Nintendo’s demo catalogue. Choose the product page for the exact game you want to try.
- Confirm the offer type. If the page says Demo or presents a demo download action, continue with the free download. If it says Game Trial, stop and read the distinction in the next section before proceeding.
- Choose the download action. Select the demo option shown on the listing and follow any on-screen confirmation. Nintendo’s sources confirm the availability of a download option but do not require one universal label for every title.
- Wait for the download to finish. Keep the console connected to the internet. The demo will appear among the software on the system when the download completes.
- Launch the demo. Start it from the HOME Menu and use the available content to decide whether the full game is worth purchasing.
You do not need to buy the full game to download a standard free demo. Nintendo’s standard-demo instructions do not state a Nintendo Switch Online membership requirement; any account, region, age, or software conditions shown on the individual listing still apply.
Demo or Game Trial? Check the wording before you download
Nintendo uses two different offers that can both appear free at first glance. A conventional demo is a separate, limited sample of a game. A Game Trial is the complete game made available temporarily to eligible Nintendo Switch Online members.
“A Game Trial is a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.”

| Point of comparison | Standard demo | Game Trial |
|---|---|---|
| What you play | A demo experience defined by the individual game listing | The full version of the game during the trial window |
| How long access lasts | Terms are set by the individual title and its listing | Access lasts for a limited period; the dates are title-specific |

| Where to check the offer | The game’s eShop product page or Nintendo’s demo catalogue | The game’s eShop page and Nintendo’s Game Trials FAQ |
In the United States, Canada, and Mexico flow described by Nintendo, the membership requirement applies when downloading a Game Trial. Trial windows and participating games can change, so confirm the dates and eligibility on the current listing. Do not treat a Game Trial as a permanent free copy: when the limited period ends, continued play requires the appropriate purchase or access method shown by Nintendo.
What to check while deciding whether to buy
Use the demo as a low-risk way to answer the questions that matter for your purchase. Confirm that the controls feel comfortable, the presentation runs as you expect, and the game’s opening content matches your interests. A demo’s scope is set by the publisher, so it may represent only part of the full release. The eShop page remains the place to verify the edition, language information, price, storage requirement, and any other purchase conditions before checkout.

Buy and download the full digital game
Prerequisites
Nintendo’s digital-purchase guidance identifies the basic requirements for downloading a purchased game: a Nintendo Account, a Nintendo Switch system, an internet connection, and access to Nintendo eShop. The console also needs enough available memory for the game. The required amount varies by title, so use the storage figure on the game’s product listing instead of relying on a general estimate.

Purchase from the game’s listing
- Return to the product page. Open Nintendo eShop and search for the same title you tried, or reopen it from your eShop history.
- Select the full-game purchase option. Make sure you are choosing the release you intend to own rather than reopening the demo or a time-limited Game Trial.
- Review the checkout details. Confirm the account, price, edition, and any regional information shown on screen before approving the purchase.
- Complete payment. Follow Nintendo’s checkout prompts. If your account balance is insufficient, Nintendo lists eShop Cards as an optional way to add funds in supported countries; a card is not needed to download a free demo.
- Start the download. For released digital games purchased through Nintendo.com, Nintendo says downloading begins after purchase. The Switch must be connected to the internet and have enough free memory.
- Leave the console online if necessary. Nintendo’s purchase FAQ says the system can download while it is on or in sleep mode, provided it has an active internet connection.
- Launch the full game. When the download completes, open the game from the HOME Menu. If the title has separate demo and full-game icons, select the full release.
Payment and regional limits
Nintendo’s eShop Cards guidance covers the Americas and notes that payment availability differs by country. Use a card intended for your own eShop region and follow the payment methods displayed for your account. Do not buy a card solely for the demo: the demo download itself is free when the listing offers it.
Manage storage before the download
Digital games vary in size. Before purchasing, open the game’s eShop product page and check the listed required space. Compare that number with the free storage shown in the Switch’s system settings. If the console does not have enough room, the purchase can still be associated with your account, but the download cannot complete until adequate space is available.
Freeing storage before checkout avoids an interrupted installation. Remove software you no longer need or use the storage-management options available on your Switch, then return to the game’s page and start the download. Keep the console connected until the progress indicator shows completion.
Before you start: a practical checklist
- Use the intended account. Sign in with the Nintendo Account that should receive the demo and, later, own the purchase. A digital purchase is associated with the account that completes it.
- Check the region. Confirm that the eShop region matches the catalogue or payment method you plan to use. US catalogue details are not a guarantee for another country.
- Identify the offer. Read whether the button says demo or Game Trial. The latter has different access rules and a limited period.
- Check storage. Read the title’s required space on its product page and make room before starting a large download.
- Stay connected. A working internet connection is required for both the free download and the purchased digital game.
- Review the final listing. Prices, editions, availability, membership conditions, and interface labels can change, so verify them immediately before confirming.
Why the account matters when you buy
It is easy for a household with several Switch users to search with one account and purchase with another. Nintendo’s support guidance says a previously purchased digital game can be downloaded at no cost only by the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. If a different family member opens the same listing, the normal price may appear even though someone else in the household already paid.

What happens after a Game Trial ends
A Game Trial is not a permanent free license. It is the full version made available for a limited, title-specific window to an eligible Nintendo Switch Online member. The current listing should show the participating game and applicable dates or terms. Once the window closes, continued access depends on the purchase or other method Nintendo presents for that title.
That is different from deleting a conventional demo. Nintendo says most demos can be located in eShop and downloaded again, but a Game Trial’s availability is controlled by its scheduled trial period and membership eligibility. Do not assume that downloading the trial guarantees unlimited future access.

Troubleshooting common problems
The demo disappeared after I deleted it
Open Nintendo eShop, sign in to the account that downloaded the demo, and search for the game again. Nintendo says most demos can be found in eShop and downloaded again. If the listing no longer offers a demo, the title’s availability may have changed; the current product page controls what can be downloaded.
For Nintendo’s redownload guidance, see How to Redownload Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch Digital Content.
The game still shows a price even though I bought it
First check the Nintendo Account currently active in eShop. Nintendo explains that a previously purchased digital game is free to redownload only for the account that made the purchase. If another family member’s account is signed in, the listing can show the normal price.
Switch to the purchasing account and open the game’s listing again. If the price remains, use Nintendo’s instructions for Previously Purchased Digital Content Shows Download Cost.
The purchase completed, but the game is not visible
Verify that the purchase was made on the account now signed in and check the console’s software and download activity. Nintendo’s Digital Content is Missing guide provides the account and purchase-status checks to use when purchased content does not appear.

The download will not start or finish
- Check the connection. Nintendo identifies an internet connection as a requirement for digital game downloads. Reconnect the Switch to the network and retry.
- Check free memory. Compare available space with the size shown on the game’s eShop page. Clear enough space before restarting.
- Check the account. Make sure the Nintendo Account that completed the purchase is the one using eShop on the console.
- Allow the download to complete. For Nintendo.com purchases, the console can download while on or in sleep mode if it remains connected to the internet.
Nintendo’s full requirements and purchase behavior are documented in the Digital Game Purchases Through Nintendo.com FAQ.

The instructions above follow Nintendo’s US catalogue and the Americas support pages. Nintendo does not establish that the same demos, Game Trials, prices, payment methods, or interface labels appear in every country. Your eShop region and Nintendo Account determine which listing you see.
Before downloading, read the live product page for the game. It is the authoritative place to confirm whether the offer is a standard demo or a Game Trial, whether a membership is required, how long a trial lasts, what the full release costs, and how much storage the download needs. Those details are subject to change as Nintendo and publishers update their digital stores.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every Nintendo Switch game have a free demo?
No. A demo exists only when that particular title’s current eShop listing offers one. Use Nintendo’s current US games-with-free-demos catalogue or search your local eShop, then confirm the product page before downloading.
Is a Game Trial the same as a demo?
No. A standard demo is a sample defined by the game listing. A Game Trial is the full game for a limited period. In Nintendo’s United States, Canada, and Mexico flow, downloading one requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership.
Do I need Nintendo Switch Online for a normal demo?
Nintendo’s standard-demo guidance does not state a Nintendo Switch Online requirement. Check the individual listing for any account, region, age, or software conditions.
Can I redownload a demo after deleting it?
Nintendo says most demos can be found in eShop and downloaded again. Search for the title while signed in to the account that originally downloaded it. If the demo offer was removed, the current listing controls availability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does a game still show a price after I bought it?
The eShop may be signed in to a different Nintendo Account. Nintendo ties the no-cost redownload to the account that made the purchase. Switch to that account and check the purchase or redownload status before buying again.
What do I need to download a purchased digital game?
Nintendo lists a Nintendo Account, a Nintendo Switch system, internet access, Nintendo eShop access, and enough available console memory. The required storage is title-specific and appears on the game’s product page.
Do I need an eShop Card to try a demo or buy a game?
An eShop Card is optional. Nintendo lists cards as one way to add funds when the account balance is insufficient, with payment availability varying by country. A card is not required for a free demo.
What should I do if my purchased game is missing?
Confirm that the purchase was made on the account currently signed in, then check software and download activity and follow Nintendo’s Digital Content is Missing guidance. Verify the original transaction before attempting another purchase.
The Bottom Line
Search your region’s Nintendo eShop, confirm that the listing offers a standard demo rather than a time-limited Game Trial, and download it while connected to the internet. If you decide to buy, use the Nintendo Account that should own the game, review the price and storage requirement, complete checkout, and leave the Switch online until the full digital game finishes downloading.
