EssentialsX Chat is an optional EssentialsX module that formats player messages. Install it alongside the core EssentialsX jar on a Bukkit-derived server (Paper is the recommended choice for modern 1.13+ servers), then use Vault and a permissions plugin such as LuckPerms when you want prefixes, suffixes, or group-aware formatting.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Minecraft Java servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
The complete setup is: copy the matching jars into plugins/, start the server once to generate plugins/Essentials/config.yml, edit the chat: section, assign rank metadata in LuckPerms, and restart while checking the console for dependency or version errors.

What EssentialsX Chat does
EssentialsX Chat is a separate, optional module rather than a feature that is automatically enabled by the core EssentialsX plugin. It controls how a message is displayed after a player sends it. A single global pattern can be used for every player, or each permission group can receive its own pattern.
EssentialsX can read rank metadata, but it does not create permission groups or prefixes by itself. Vault provides the bridge between EssentialsX and a permissions plugin. LuckPerms (or another Vault-compatible permissions manager) stores the group, prefix, and suffix data that EssentialsX inserts into the chat line.

EssentialsX Chat is not a replacement for a full moderation or network chat system. Its job here is message formatting, optional local chat radius, and control over which formatting codes players may enter.
Requirements and compatibility
Use a supported server platform
Run EssentialsX on a supported Bukkit-derived platform. The project recommends Paper for servers running Minecraft 1.13 and later because it is the modern, actively maintained choice in the Bukkit family. Your exact Minecraft version must also be supported by the EssentialsX release you download.
Install matching modules
Keep the core EssentialsX jar and the EssentialsX Chat jar on the same EssentialsX version. Mixing releases can produce missing-method errors, failed module loading, or formatting that silently does not work. If you use other EssentialsX modules, update them together as well.
Dependencies for rank data
- Required for basic formatting: the core EssentialsX jar and the EssentialsX Chat jar.
- Required for prefixes, suffixes, and group-aware features: Vault and a Vault-compatible permissions plugin such as LuckPerms.
- Required operationally: access to the server files and permission to restart the server cleanly.
Vault does not supply permissions on its own. It exposes a common interface so EssentialsX can read the metadata held by LuckPerms or another permissions manager.

Install EssentialsX Chat step by step
- Stop or prepare the server. Use a controlled maintenance window. If this is an existing server, back up the entire Essentials folder before replacing jars or changing configuration.
- Download the required EssentialsX jars. Obtain the core EssentialsX jar and the EssentialsX Chat module for the same release. Some downloads are archives; extract the jar files if necessary rather than copying an archive into the plugins directory.
- Copy the jars to the plugins directory. Place both EssentialsX jars in the server’s
plugins/directory. Do not put them in a subfolder; the server scans the plugins directory for loadable jars. - Add Vault and LuckPerms when rank data is needed. Copy the Vault jar and the LuckPerms jar into the same
plugins/directory. A server with no prefixes or group-specific formatting can use EssentialsX Chat without these two additions, but rank placeholders will not have useful permission metadata without them. - Start the server once. The first successful startup creates the EssentialsX data directory and
plugins/Essentials/config.yml. Watch the console for messages showing that Essentials, EssentialsChat, Vault, and LuckPerms loaded successfully. - Stop the server cleanly. Use the server’s
stopcommand or its hosting control panel. Avoid killing the process while YAML files are being written. - Edit the generated configuration. Open
plugins/Essentials/config.ymlin a text editor that preserves spaces. Configure thechat:section, save the file, and keep the indentation intact. - Start or restart the server. A full restart is safer than relying on a plugin reload, which can leave stale dependency state. Join with a normal player account and send a test message.
Back up the Essentials folder before a major upgrade. The project recommends updating configuration when moving between releases; compare your existing settings with the newly generated version instead of blindly replacing every line.
Configure a single chat format
For one consistent layout, set the format key under chat:. This example makes chat global, prints the prefix before the display name, colors the separator gray, and resets the message to white:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
chat:
radius: 0
format: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
radius: 0 means there is no local-distance limit in this setting. If you choose a positive radius, EssentialsX can treat chat as local, so players outside that distance may not see the message. The radius and format are independent settings.
Quote the entire YAML value when it contains ampersands, colons, braces, or other punctuation. YAML indentation uses spaces, not tabs. A malformed indent can prevent EssentialsX from loading the configuration, so check the console immediately after a restart if chat stops working.

Available placeholders
The upstream EssentialsX configuration documents these placeholders for chat formatting:
| Placeholder | Value inserted | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
{MESSAGE} |
The player’s message text | Place at the end of the format. |
{USERNAME} |
The account username | Use when you specifically want the login name. |
{DISPLAYNAME} |
The player’s display name | Usually preferable when nicknames or display formatting are enabled. |
{NICKNAME} |
The configured nickname, when one exists | Use only when nickname output is intentional. |
{PREFIX} |
Prefix supplied by the permissions system through Vault | Rank labels such as a staff tag. |
{SUFFIX} |
Suffix supplied by the permissions system through Vault | Post-name labels or decorative rank text. |
{GROUP} |
The player’s permission group | Display a group name or use it while designing group formats. |
{WORLD} |
World value exposed by EssentialsX | World-aware layouts. |
{WORLDNAME} |
World name | Readable world labels. |
{SHORTWORLDNAME} |
Short world name | Compact multi-world chat. |
{TEAMNAME}, {TEAMPREFIX}, {TEAMSUFFIX} |
Team values when available | Scoreboard-team-aware output. |
A prefix placeholder only displays something if a prefix has actually been assigned to the player or one of the groups inherited by that player. Adding {PREFIX} to the format does not create a prefix.
Use different formats for different groups
When ranks need visibly different layouts, replace a single global style with group-formats. Group keys must match the permission-group names exactly, including capitalization where your permissions setup distinguishes it. A practical pattern is:
chat:
radius: 0
group-formats:
default: '{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
moderator: '&2[Mod] {DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
admin: '&c[Admin] {DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'
Use either the global format approach or group-specific entries for a given design. Group formats require more maintenance but let each rank have a precise style. A global format is easier to keep consistent and is usually the better choice for a server with one rank or many ranks that should look identical.

| Design choice | Advantages | Costs and risks |
|---|---|---|
One format |
One edit updates every player; fewer spelling and fallback problems; consistent readability. | Cannot give ranks distinct brackets, colors, or labels without relying on the prefix itself. |
group-formats |
Each permission group can have a tailored pattern; useful for staff and special roles. | Every group needs a matching key; adding a rank means another configuration entry and more opportunities for YAML mistakes. |
If a player belongs to a group that has no matching group-format entry, check the EssentialsX behavior and your configuration rather than assuming the player’s prefix is broken. A global format can provide a simpler fallback design for servers that do not need per-group layouts.
Make LuckPerms prefixes appear
Assign metadata to a group
Give the group a prefix (or suffix) in LuckPerms, then make sure the EssentialsX format contains the corresponding token. For example, a LuckPerms administrator can assign a weighted prefix with a command like:
/lp group moderator meta setprefix 100 "&2[Mod] "
/lp group admin meta setprefix 100 "&c[Admin] "
The number is the metadata priority. If a player inherits multiple prefixes, the permissions system uses its priority rules; choose priorities deliberately and remove obsolete metadata rather than stacking contradictory values. The exact command must be run by an account with LuckPerms administration permission, normally from the console or an appropriately authorized administrator account.
Match the format token to the metadata
Use {PREFIX} before {DISPLAYNAME} when the rank label should appear before the name:

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
format: '{PREFIX}{DISPLAYNAME}&7: &f{MESSAGE}'

For a group-specific design, the group key controls the pattern while {PREFIX} still reads the metadata supplied through Vault. If the pattern hard-codes a label such as [Mod], that text is independent of the LuckPerms prefix and can become inaccurate when a rank is renamed.
Check the bridge and load order
On startup, Vault must load and detect a permissions provider, and LuckPerms must load without errors. EssentialsX Chat then needs to be able to query that provider. If the console reports that Vault has no permission provider, or if LuckPerms failed to enable, a correctly written {PREFIX} token will still render nothing.
Control player-entered color and formatting
EssentialsX distinguishes the chat layout you configure from formatting codes that players type into their own messages. Grant only the nodes a group genuinely needs:
| Permission | What it allows | Administrative consideration |
|---|---|---|
essentials.chat.color |
Color codes in player-entered chat. | Useful for trusted groups; unrestricted color can reduce readability or be abused for impersonation. |
essentials.chat.format |
Formatting codes such as bold or italic where supported. | Separate from the server-wide chat pattern. |
essentials.chat.magic |
Obfuscated (magic) text. | Usually restrict to staff or omit because it can make messages unreadable. |
essentials.chat.rgb |
RGB color support where the installed EssentialsX version supports it. | Version-dependent; verify the release before granting it. |
essentials.chat.url |
URL-related chat formatting behavior documented by EssentialsX. | Consider moderation and link-abuse policy before enabling it broadly. |
Do not grant a wildcard permission merely to make formatting work. Assign the smallest set of nodes required by each group, and test with a normal account. If RGB does not work, confirm that the installed EssentialsX release supports it and that the node is granted to the intended group.
Verify the finished setup
- Log in with an ordinary player account, not only an operator account.
- Send a plain message and confirm the name, separators, colors, and message text match the configured pattern.
- Log in with a member of each formatted group and confirm the correct group-format entry or prefix appears.
- Test a player who inherits a rank through another group to ensure the intended metadata priority is being used.
- If color permissions are enabled, test each allowed code and confirm that disallowed codes are rejected or displayed literally.
- Check the server console after the restart for YAML parse errors, missing dependencies, failed plugin enables, or version mismatch warnings.
Make one configuration change at a time. This makes it possible to identify whether a failure came from the YAML, the permissions metadata, or a competing chat plugin.
Troubleshoot missing prefixes and broken chat
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The message appears, but no prefix is shown. | {PREFIX} is absent; no prefix is assigned; Vault or LuckPerms is not active. |
Add the token, assign group metadata, then confirm Vault detects LuckPerms on startup. |
| The wrong rank label appears. | Metadata priority, inheritance, or an old prefix is taking precedence. | Inspect inherited groups and prefix weights in LuckPerms; remove obsolete metadata and set the intended priority. |
| One rank uses the wrong style. | The group-formats key does not exactly match the permission-group name. |
Correct the key, including spelling and capitalization, or use one global format. |
| Chat stops loading after an edit. | Invalid YAML indentation, an unquoted special character, or a malformed value. | Restore the backup, validate spaces and quotes, and read the first configuration error in the console. |
| Color codes do not work for a player. | The relevant Essentials permission is missing, or the installed version does not support the requested capability. | Grant only the needed node and verify version support, especially for RGB. |
| EssentialsX Chat loads but formatting is ignored. | Another chat plugin is taking over message formatting. | Check the other plugin’s chat settings and integration, and ensure only the intended plugin formats messages. |
| Some Essentials modules fail after an update. | Core and optional modules are on different versions. | Update all EssentialsX modules together and review the generated configuration for release changes. |
| Only nearby players see messages. | radius is set to a positive number. |
Set radius: 0 for unrestricted server-wide chat, or keep the value when local chat is intentional. |
Operational practices that prevent future problems
- Back up before upgrades. Preserve the Essentials folder and configuration before replacing jars.
- Keep versions aligned. Core EssentialsX, EssentialsX Chat, and any other EssentialsX modules should be updated as a set.
- Edit with a YAML-aware editor. Spaces, quoting, and indentation are part of the configuration syntax.
- Restart rather than relying on reloads. A controlled restart ensures Vault, LuckPerms, and EssentialsX rebuild their integration cleanly.
- Test least privilege. Verify formatting with a non-operator account so accidental operator access does not hide permission mistakes.
- Document group names and priorities. A short record of each group key, prefix, suffix, and priority makes later changes safer.
The Bottom Line
Install the core EssentialsX and EssentialsX Chat jars together, add Vault plus LuckPerms for rank metadata, configure chat.format or chat.group-formats, and include {PREFIX} or {SUFFIX} where those values should appear. Matching versions, exact group names, valid YAML, and least-privilege formatting permissions are the keys to a reliable setup.
