A proxy that exits immediately has a startup problem; a proxy that stays online but will not let players join has a networking, forwarding, or backend problem.

Start BungeeCord from a terminal or panel that preserves the complete console output. Find the first line marked ERROR or SEVERE, the first Java exception, YAML parser message, or bind failure. Lines later in a stack trace commonly describe consequences rather than the original fault.
What to record
- The exact error text, including the JAR name, path, IP address, and port.
- Whether the process exits immediately or remains running.
- The Java version reported by the machine.
- Any configuration line named in a YAML or Java exception.
Do not replace the whole configuration just because the console is noisy. Identify the earliest actionable message first; it determines which branch of this guide applies.

2. Verify Java, the JAR, and the working directory
SpigotMC’s installation guidance lists Java 8 or newer as a prerequisite. The command must also run in the directory containing the proxy JAR, or you must provide the JAR’s full path.
Check the runtime
java -versionConfirm that the displayed major version is supported by the BungeeCord build you installed. Older builds may require an older JDK, while newer builds can require a newer one; use the build’s stated requirement rather than assuming that the newest Java is always compatible. If java is not recognized, install a JDK or JRE appropriate to the build and make sure its executable is on the system path.

Check the file and folder
From the proxy directory, list the files and copy the exact JAR name. A command that refers to BungeeCord.jar will fail if the downloaded file is named differently, such as a versioned filename.
java -Xms512M -Xmx512M -jar BungeeCord.jarThe command above is the launch form shown in SpigotMC’s installation instructions. Adjust the memory values to your host’s available RAM, but do not use memory flags to conceal a missing file or incompatible Java runtime.

Interpret common launch failures
Unable to access jarfile: you are in the wrong directory, the filename is wrong, or the account cannot read the file. List the directory, correct the name, and retry.- Class-version or unsupported-version errors: the JAR was built for a different Java major version. Install or select the required JDK, then verify again with
java -version. - Immediate exit with no useful message: run the command manually from the proxy folder so the terminal shows output that a hosting panel may hide.
3. Validate config.yml as YAML
BungeeCord reads config.yml before it can open its listener. One tab, a misplaced colon, inconsistent indentation, duplicate structure, or an incorrectly typed value can stop startup. YAML uses spaces for indentation; do not use tabs.
Use the generated file as the baseline
- Stop the proxy.
- Copy the current
config.ymlto a backup outside the active folder. - Compare the active file with the default file generated by the same BungeeCord build.
- Reapply your edits one small block at a time, starting the proxy after each block.
Keeping the original hierarchy is safer than rewriting the file. The important sections include listeners, query_port, and named entries under servers. Listener entries contain a host; backend entries contain an address, MOTD, and restricted value.

restricted: falseGenerated defaults vary by build, so treat this only as a map of the fields to inspect, not a file to paste blindly. In particular, retain one correctly formed listener list and ensure every priority name has a matching key under servers.
Typical YAML mistakes
- Using a tab before
addressormotd. - Putting a backend server outside the
servers:mapping. - Leaving an unmatched quote or colon in a MOTD.
- Defining the same key twice and unknowingly replacing an earlier value.
- Entering an explanatory comment or protocol prefix where an address is expected.
If the console reports a YAML parser exception or a YamlConfig.load stack trace, restore a known-good file, then add edits carefully until the offending change is identified.

4. Fix listener binding errors
A proxy can parse its configuration and still fail when the operating system tries to reserve the listener. The listener’s host combines a bind address and port, commonly 0.0.0.0:25565 for a public Minecraft entry point. The address must exist on the machine (or be the wildcard address), and the port must not already be occupied.
Check the address
- Use
0.0.0.0to listen on all local interfaces when the host has multiple network adapters and you do not need to restrict the bind. - Use a specific private or public address only if that address is actually assigned to the server. Binding to an address belonging to another machine produces “Could not bind to host.”
- Do not configure two listener entries for the same address and port.
Find the process using the port
On Linux, inspect the conventional port 25565 (or your configured port):
ss -ltnp | grep 25565
lsof -i :25565On Windows, run:
netstat -ano | findstr :25565The result includes a process ID. Stop the other Minecraft server or service, select a free proxy port, or correct the old service’s configuration. If you change the port, update firewall rules, router forwarding, DNS documentation, and the address players use.
Do not confuse query and listener ports
query_port is used for GameSpy-style server queries; it is not automatically the port players use to join. Keep it distinct from the listener unless your build explicitly supports and requires otherwise. A query port conflict can also prevent startup, so check every configured port rather than only 25565.

5. Check every backend in servers
Successful proxy startup does not prove that a Minecraft backend is reachable. Each name under servers must resolve to a running backend process at the exact host and port shown in its address.
Confirm the backend process
- Start the lobby or default backend independently and wait until it reports that it is listening.
- On the proxy host, check that backend port with
ss -ltnp,lsof, ornetstat. - Verify that the address in
config.ymlmatches the backend’s actual bind address and port, including every digit. - From a separate machine on the same network, test the route if the backend is remote; a local process check alone does not prove network reachability.
Match priorities and names exactly
The listener’s priorities list (the fallback order) is case-sensitive and must contain names that exist under servers. If the list says lobby but the mapping is named Lobby or survival, BungeeCord cannot select the intended fallback. This mismatch commonly appears as “Could not connect to a default or fallback server.”
What a fallback error means
- The backend process is stopped or still loading.
- The host or port is wrong.
- A firewall blocks traffic between proxy and backend.
- The backend is configured for the wrong proxy mode or forwarding settings.
Correct the backend first, then restart or reconnect through the proxy. Do not expose a backend publicly just to make the error disappear.
6. Align forwarding and authentication settings
SpigotMC’s installation guidance requires enabling BungeeCord support on Spigot backends and describes IP forwarding. The proxy and every backend must agree on the forwarding mode and secret where your build uses one. A mismatch can allow the proxy to start while rejecting player connections or reporting that the backend is unreachable.

The BungeeCord project describes the software as a proxy designed to move players between multiple Minecraft servers. Its README also warns that backend servers must run with authentication disabled (online-mode=false) for proxy operation, which creates a security risk.
Apply the security requirement
- Never expose an offline-mode backend directly to the public internet.
- Bind backends to a private interface or localhost when the proxy is on the same machine.
- Use host firewall rules or a private network so only the proxy can reach backend ports.
- Keep the proxy’s forwarding and authentication settings deliberately aligned with the backend configuration.
If players can join a backend by entering its direct address, the isolation is incomplete even if proxy connections work.

For players outside the server’s network, traffic must pass through the host firewall, any cloud security group, and (for a home connection) the router’s port-forwarding rule. Minecraft Help notes that port forwarding may be required. Forward the proxy listener port, not every backend port.
Public deployment checklist
- Allow inbound TCP traffic to the proxy listener in the operating-system firewall.
- Allow the same port in the cloud provider’s security group, if applicable.
- Forward the router’s external port to the proxy host’s private address.
- Point the DNS record at the correct public address and wait for DNS changes to propagate.
- Block inbound traffic to lobby, survival, and other backend ports from the public network.
For a local test, connect using the proxy host’s LAN address and listener port. If local players can join but remote players time out, concentrate on router, cloud firewall, host firewall, or DNS rather than YAML.
8. Separate startup failures from join failures
Use the process state to choose the correct repair path. Changing backend settings cannot repair a Java process that exits before opening a socket, and changing Java cannot repair a blocked public port.

10. A controlled recovery procedure
When several edits have accumulated and the original cause is unclear, use this sequence to avoid carrying a hidden error forward.
- Stop BungeeCord and back up the entire proxy directory, including
config.yml. - Confirm Java with
java -versionand confirm the JAR filename by listing the directory. - Generate or restore a default configuration from the same build.
- Set one listener on an available, locally assigned address and port.
- Start the proxy with the explicit command
java -Xms512M -Xmx512M -jar BungeeCord.jarfrom that directory. - After the proxy remains running, add one backend under
serversand one matching priority name. - Start that backend, verify its listening socket, and connect from a client on the same network.
- Only after local proxy-to-backend connectivity works, configure forwarding, public firewall rules, router forwarding, and DNS.
- Add additional backends one at a time, testing the fallback order after each change.
This staged approach identifies whether a failure was introduced by the runtime, YAML, listener, backend, or public networking instead of mixing all five variables.
