To play GTA RP, install GTA V on a supported PC, install the official Cfx.re FiveM client, sign in, then choose a server and follow that community’s entry instructions. You do not need to host a server to join one. Compatibility depends on the GTA V edition and current client support, while applications, Discord, allowlisting, and voice requirements vary by community.
Before you install: check your platform and GTA V edition
FiveM is a PC client, not a way to join GTA RP from PlayStation or Xbox. Cfx.re’s support FAQ describes FiveM as developed for PC versions of GTA V Legacy, says it has no console support plans, and states that the client cannot run on Linux. Cfx has also published development material about a FiveM client for GTA V Enhanced, so Legacy-only guidance may not describe every current client. Check Cfx.re’s platform FAQ and current client documentation for the edition you own and the server you want to join.
You also need GTA V installed on the PC before following the FiveM installation guide. Keep the game installation available so FiveM can locate it.
How to install FiveM and join a GTA RP server
- Install and update GTA V. Use a supported PC edition and make sure the game is installed before opening FiveM’s installer.
- Download the official client. Visit FiveM.net, choose Download Client, and run the downloaded FiveM.exe.
- Point FiveM to the game. When prompted, browse to the GTA V installation folder and select
GTA5.exe. - Allow the client to prepare its data. Accept the local game-data update prompt and let it finish; Cfx.re says this can take several minutes.
- Sign in to Cfx. Review and accept the terms if you wish to proceed, select Sign in with Cfx, authorize in the browser, then return to FiveM. The Cfx.re installation guide says not to skip account sign-in.
- Open the server browser. Search for communities and read their descriptions and access instructions before choosing one.
- Complete that community’s onboarding. Follow its stated process, which may involve Discord, an application, an interview, or an allowlist. These are server-specific, not universal FiveM setup steps.
- Prepare voice chat if required. If the community expects voice, check your microphone and the server’s stated voice setup. A headset with a microphone is optional equipment, not a FiveM prerequisite.
- Read the rules before playing. GTA RP communities set their own expectations for character behavior and interaction; check the chosen server’s rules rather than assuming they are the same everywhere.

Check whether your PC meets FiveM’s published requirements
Cfx.re’s FiveM-specific requirements, in its support article updated September 19, 2025, are listed below. Cfx.re also says the original GTA V requirements apply. Meeting the listed minimums does not guarantee a particular frame rate or smooth performance on heavily customized servers.

How to choose a community
There is no single server setup that applies to every GTA RP community. Use the server browser listing and the community’s own documentation to compare practical fit:
- Roleplay style and rules: Make sure the server’s approach and expectations suit how you want to play.
- Language and activity: Check which language the community uses and whether its activity level fits your schedule.
- Access requirements: Look for allowlist indicators and whether an application or other approval is needed. Cfx.re says the browser can display allowlist information and instructions.
- Onboarding channel: Check whether the community directs players to Discord or another place for rules and entry steps.
- Voice expectations: Confirm whether voice chat is required; some communities may offer exceptions or text-based play.
Server listings, rules, and access processes can change, so rely on the selected community’s current instructions rather than assuming a particular server will admit you.

Joining a server is different from hosting one
If you only want to play on an existing community, you do not need to install or administer FXServer. Hosting your own server is a separate task involving server artifacts, FXServer, txAdmin, a Cfx account, a server template, and a registration key. Cfx.re’s server setup guide is for that separate process.

Rockstar Games’ support page, last updated April 22, 2024, lists GTA Online and roleplay or community servers supported through the Cfx.re Platform Server (FXServer) as authorized GTA multiplayer services. Rockstar says other online GTA services are unauthorized, may violate the software license, and can expose players to bans from Rockstar services.
