BlazBlue: Central Fiction multiplayer setup depends on the edition you own. For local versus play, connect a compatible controller for each player; on Steam, use Steam Input and reorder devices if both controllers are not recognized separately. Online, Steam supports rollback netcode, Switch offers ranked matches and player rooms but no cross-play or online lobby, and the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 versions can play together under specific restrictions.
Check your edition before setting up multiplayer
BlazBlue: Central Fiction does not have one shared multiplayer setup across platforms. Steam, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation have different online features and compatibility rules. In particular, the documented PlayStation cross-play applies to PS3 and PS4; it does not mean those versions can play with Steam or Switch.

How to set up local multiplayer
Nintendo Switch: connect one compatible controller per player
The Switch edition supports one to two offline players. Nintendo says multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player. Pair or connect a controller for each person, launch the game, and choose its offline versus mode. A Nintendo Switch Pro Controller is one supported option, as is the separately sold REAL ARCADE Pro.V HAYABUSA for Nintendo Switch; neither is mandatory if you already have compatible controllers.

Steam: assign controllers to player slots 1 and 2
If two controllers do not control separate players, a Steam Community guide recommends enabling Steam Input for the game and reordering the devices into controller slots 1 and 2. These are community-maintained instructions, not an official Arc System Works manual.
- Connect both controllers, arcade sticks, or button boxes before launching the game.
- In your Steam Library, open the game’s controller settings and enable Steam Input.
- Launch the game and open the Steam Overlay. In desktop mode, press Shift+Tab and select the controller icon. In Big Picture or Steam Deck mode, open controller settings using the controller or Home button.
- Reorder the intended devices so they occupy controller slots 1 and 2, then return to the game. The input device that opened the title screen navigates the menus.
- Enter offline versus mode and check that each player can control a separate side.
The guide advises against running other input-mapping programs alongside Steam Input because they can interfere with controller handling. It does not establish a universal keyboard-plus-controller configuration, so that combination may depend on your setup. See the Steam Community controller guide.

PlayStation: pair controllers and enter offline versus
Pair each controller with the console, launch the game, and choose offline versus play. The official PlayStation information reviewed documents online modes and cross-play, but not a model-specific local controller menu sequence.
How to play online
Steam: choose an online mode
Start the game’s online or network mode and select the matchmaking or Player Match option you want. Arc System Works’ March 7, 2022 Steam announcement says rollback netcode was implemented for all online modes and notes online improvements including rematch options for Player Match and other matchmaking modes. Menu labels can guide the final steps because the available official information does not provide a current click-by-click Steam walkthrough.

Switch: use Ranked Match or create a Player Match room
Online play on Switch requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, according to Nintendo UK. Arc System Works describes the edition’s network modes as supporting two to eight online players. There is no online lobby, and Switch does not cross-play with other platforms.

To search for a ranked opponent
- Enter Ranked Match and optionally set search criteria, such as area, player level, and match completion rate.
- Start the search. You can wait while playing other game modes.
- When an opponent is found, their name appears at the lower right. Press + to open the pause menu and begin the match.
- Use the pause menu to stop or pause Ranked Match entry when needed.
To play with friends or a group
Choose Player Match, then create or enter a room and select its room type. The official manual describes rooms for match/spectate, free-for-all, training, replay theater, and team battle, with up to eight players per session.

PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4: use search for a friend across models
Arc System Works says PS3 and PS4 versions can play against each other. However, Player Match invitations are available only between players using the same console model. If you want to play with a friend on the other model, use Player Match search rather than an invitation. The official page also says PS4 online play requires PS Plus.

- PS3 and PS4: Yes, those editions can play against each other. Player Match invitations remain same-model only, so use search to find a friend on the other model.
- Steam with Switch or PlayStation: The cited platform information does not establish cross-play for these combinations. Do not assume compatibility.
Platform compatibility information is specific to the edition and system; the Switch and PlayStation rules are documented by Arc System Works.
What to try when player two cannot join locally
- Confirm both controllers are connected or paired before starting the game.
- On Steam, enable Steam Input for the game and reorder the devices into controller slots 1 and 2 using the Overlay controller settings.
- Close other input-mapping software while testing Steam Input.
- On Switch, check that each person has a compatible controller assigned to them.
The Steam slot-reordering steps are a user-maintained workaround, not a guaranteed fix for every hardware configuration.
