Steam lists the unmodified game as “Single-player.” On the Steam PC version, the documented way to add couch play is the community-made Local Couch Co-op mod (formerly HUNK’y Friend), which requires REFramework and supports either a shared screen or split screen.
The practical setup is one of two configurations: two controllers, or keyboard and mouse for player one plus a controller for player two. Player one continues to use the game’s normal controls; player two uses the mod’s controller mapping. What local multiplayer means in Resident Evil 2 Remake
The official Steam listing for Resident Evil 2 identifies the January 24, 2019 release as “Single-player,” with “Full Controller Support” and “Xbox Controllers” among its feature labels. There is therefore no Capcom-provided second-player menu to enable in the unmodified PC game. Steam listing: Resident Evil 2 on Steam.

Local Couch Co-op (formally known as HUNK’y Friend) documents local two-player operation for the Steam PC version. This is a modded arrangement, not native multiplayer, so compatibility and controls depend on the mod, REFramework, and the controllers you select.

Requirements before you begin
| Item | What the documentation establishes | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Game edition | Steam PC version of Resident Evil 2 | The Local Couch Co-op page specifically targets this edition. Capcom’s PC support information is available at Capcom’s Resident Evil 2 PC requirements FAQ. |
| Base game status | Steam labels the unmodified game “Single-player” | Do not look for a native local-multiplayer switch; the second player comes from the mod. |
| Framework | REFramework is listed as a requirement by the mod | The mod cannot be treated as a standalone controller option. Use the current REFramework instructions linked from the mod’s requirements section. |
| Input devices | Two controllers, or keyboard and mouse plus one controller | Player one uses the game’s normal input. Player two is documented as controller-based. |
| Display options | Shared-screen and split-screen modes | Choose one after the second player is detected. Fixed-camera play requires the separate Resident Evil 2 Remake Classic mod. |
| Optional controller helper | Recent notes mention support for some PS3, generic USB/DirectInput controllers, and arcade sticks through a helper plugin | The helper plugin can contribute to crashes in some cases, so nonstandard devices are not universally guaranteed. |
Install the modded setup
Keep the installation tied to the versions named on the mod page. Its requirements and supported versions can change, and a game or framework update can make an older combination stop working.
- Verify that you own and launch the Steam PC edition. The mod page is written for the Steam release, not a console copy or an unrelated PC distribution. Open the game’s Steam page and confirm that it is the 2019 Resident Evil 2 entry.
- Read the current Local Couch Co-op requirements. Open the mod’s Nexus Mods page and note the currently required REFramework version and any listed dependencies. Do not rely on an old copy of the instructions saved elsewhere.
- Install REFramework first. Follow the current installation directions supplied from the requirement section. REFramework is the loader/framework layer the mod expects; installing only the co-op files is not the documented setup.
- Download the current Local Couch Co-op release. Use the files and installation directions on the mod page: Nexus Mods Local Couch Co-op. Preserve the folder structure specified there rather than moving individual files based on guesswork.
- Connect the intended input devices. The documented layouts are two controllers, or keyboard and mouse for player one plus a controller for player two. A second gamepad is an input device for the mod; simply plugging it into a game that Steam labels single-player does not create multiplayer by itself.
- Start the game and open the mod’s control page. Use the in-game control or configuration page as the operational reference. The page and its version history can change, and the exact button assignment can differ with the selected controller mapping.
- Choose the display mode. Select shared screen if both players should use one view, or split screen if each player needs a separate view. If you specifically want the original fixed-camera presentation, install and configure the separate Resident Evil 2 Remake Classic mod as well; Local Couch Co-op alone does not provide that camera mode.
Choose a control layout
Two-controller setup
This is the clearest arrangement when both people want gamepad controls. Player one uses the game’s own controller handling, while player two uses the controller mapping supplied by Local Couch Co-op. Steam’s “Full Controller Support” and “Xbox Controllers” labels explain why an Xbox-compatible PC gamepad is a sensible category of accessory, but those labels do not certify every third-party pad or guarantee that a particular model will work with the mod.
Connect both pads before configuring the mod, then identify which device is assigned to each player on the mod’s control page. Recent version notes describe selecting controllers by name. If two otherwise identical devices are connected, naming or selecting the correct one prevents the second player from taking over player one’s input.

Keyboard and mouse plus one controller
In this layout, player one remains on keyboard and mouse through the game’s standard controls. Player two uses the controller documented by the mod. This avoids having to make two people share a keyboard, but it still requires the controller to appear in the mod’s supported mapping list. If the game responds to the keyboard but the second player never appears, troubleshoot the controller assignment rather than changing player one’s key bindings.
Devices that need a helper plugin
The mod’s recent notes mention added support for some PS3 controllers, generic USB/DirectInput devices, and arcade sticks through a helper plugin. That support is conditional: the same notes warn that the helper can contribute to crashes in some situations. Start with a standard, recognized controller if you are diagnosing a problem. Add the helper only when your device requires it, and remove that extra variable if the game becomes unstable.
Player-two controls
The following is the control behavior documented by the mod. Button names are expressed in Xbox-style terms because that is how the page describes them; the actual assignment can vary with your selected controller profile. Confirm the live mapping in the mod’s in-game control page instead of assuming that every pad labels buttons identically.

| Action | Documented input | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Spawn or remove player two | Press Start + Back | The same combination is documented for bringing player two into the scene or removing that player. |
| Move | Left stick | Movement applies to player two’s controller. |
| Aim in free-aim or split-screen play | Right stick | The page specifically documents the right stick for aiming in these modes. |
| Aim | LT | Check the selected mapping if your controller uses different labels. |
| Shoot | RT | Check the selected mapping if your controller uses different labels. |
| Weapons, interaction, healing, reload options, and menus | Other controller buttons shown by the mod | The supplied documentation describes these functions but does not establish one universal button assignment for every device. Use the in-game control page. |
Spawning the second player
After the game and mod are running, press Start + Back on the controller assigned to player two. If the player appears, test movement with the left stick before changing any other setting. Pressing the same combination removes the second player according to the mod’s documented behavior. This is the control to try first when a controller is connected but no second character is visible.

Understanding aim behavior
Free-aim and split-screen play use the right stick for player-two aiming, with LT and RT documented for aiming and shooting. Shared-screen play can feel different because both players occupy one view; do not interpret the absence of a separate camera as a failed controller assignment. First identify which screen mode is active, then verify the mapping shown by the mod.
Shared screen or split screen?
| Mode | What you see | Best fit | Limit to remember |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shared screen | Both players use one shared game view | A couch setup where keeping the action in one frame is more important than independent camera control | Both players are represented in the same view, so movement and aiming are coordinated around that shared presentation. |
| Split screen | Each player receives a separate portion of the display | Players who need independent visual space while moving and aiming | Use the mod’s documented split-screen controls, including right-stick aiming for player two. |
| Fixed-camera presentation | Classic fixed-camera behavior | Players specifically seeking the older camera style | Requires the separate Resident Evil 2 Remake Classic mod; it is not supplied by Local Couch Co-op alone. |
The mod page does not publish a controlled performance comparison between shared and split screen. Choose based on how you want the display and camera to behave, not on an assumed frame-rate advantage.

How to add a second controller for RE2 Remake
- Use the Steam PC edition and install the current REFramework and Local Couch Co-op combination from the mod’s requirements and files.
- Plug in both controllers, or keep player one on keyboard and mouse and plug in one controller for player two.
- Open the mod’s control page and select the intended player-two device by its displayed name when that option is available.
- Check that the controller responds to the documented left-stick movement and that the mod shows the expected mapping for LT, RT, and the other actions.
- Press Start + Back on the player-two controller to spawn the second player.
- Test movement, aiming, shooting, interaction, and menu behavior in a safe part of the game before settling on shared screen or split screen.
If the controller works in Steam but not in the mod, Steam recognition alone is not proof that the mod has assigned it to player two. Recheck the mod’s selected device and mapping page.

The game still behaves as single-player
- Confirm that you launched the Steam PC version named by the mod.
- Verify that REFramework is installed and that its current version is one the mod page lists as required.
- Recheck the Local Couch Co-op installation against the current Nexus Mods instructions instead of relying on an older file layout.
- Remember that the Steam “Single-player” label remains accurate for the base game; the mod supplies the local-play layer.
The second player never appears
- Use the controller assigned to player two and press Start + Back.
- Open the mod’s control page and select the controller by name if the version provides that option.
- Test the left stick for movement and compare the displayed mapping with the physical labels on your controller.
- If you are using a helper-plugin-dependent device, temporarily test a standard controller to separate device compatibility from installation problems.
The wrong controller moves player two
Two similar pads can be enumerated in an order you did not expect. Use the mod’s controller-selection option and identify each device by name. Do not assume that the first controller listed by Windows or Steam is automatically player two; the mod’s assignment is the relevant setting.

Buttons do not match the table
The table describes the mod’s documented functions, not a promise that every physical pad prints the same letters or symbols. Open the in-game control page, inspect the selected controller mapping, and use that page for weapon selection, interaction, healing, reload options, and menus. A PlayStation-style layout may label the same physical positions differently from an Xbox-style layout.

The camera does not look like classic Resident Evil 2
Shared screen and split screen are the two display choices documented by Local Couch Co-op. Fixed-camera play requires the separate Resident Evil 2 Remake Classic mod. Installing only the couch-co-op mod will not add that presentation.
The game crashes with a nonstandard controller
The version history notes that a helper plugin can enable some PS3, generic USB/DirectInput, and arcade-stick devices, while also warning that the helper may contribute to crashes. Remove the helper or switch to a standard recognized controller as a diagnostic step. If stability returns, the issue is associated with that additional compatibility layer rather than proof that all controllers are unsupported.
Keeping the setup working after updates
Local Couch Co-op and its requirements are maintained separately from the base game. The mod page was updated October 12, 2026, and its version history was crawled October 13, 2026; those dates describe the documentation available then, not a permanent compatibility guarantee. Before updating the game, REFramework, or the mod, read the current requirements and change notes.
- Keep a note of the versions that worked together so you can identify which component changed after an update.
- Recheck controller selection after adding or removing a USB device; device names and enumeration can change.
- Test the basic two-controller configuration before enabling a helper plugin or adding the separate classic-camera mod.
- Use the mod’s current in-game control page whenever a button assignment appears to change.
What this setup can and cannot promise
It can provide a documented local two-player experience on the Steam PC version through a community mod, with shared-screen or split-screen presentation and a controller-based second player. It cannot turn the unmodified game into an officially supported multiplayer title, and a controller connected to the computer cannot do that by itself.
Compatibility is conditional on the current REFramework requirement, the mod version, the selected controller mapping, and—in the case of certain PS3, generic DirectInput, or arcade-stick devices—the helper plugin. Because no controlled performance comparison is published for the display modes, select shared or split screen according to the way you want to play rather than an assumed technical advantage.
For the authoritative, version-sensitive details, keep the current Local Couch Co-op description and its version history open while you install and configure the setup.
