To restrict Super Mario games on Nintendo Switch, open System Settings > Parental Controls > Parental Controls Settings, choose Restriction Level, then select an age preset or Custom Settings. For play-time limits, activity reports and a list of games that can bypass the software restriction, use the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Most restrictions apply to the console as a whole, not only to Mario or to one player.
Choose the console settings or the phone app
Nintendo offers two setup routes. Console settings are the direct way to apply age-based software restrictions and communication controls. The app adds play-time scheduling, activity reports and selected-game allow-list management.

Nintendo’s support guide says the app provides the most restriction options. These are system controls: changing a setting may affect every user and game on that Switch, not just a particular Mario title.
Set a software restriction on the Switch
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll to Parental Controls, then choose Parental Controls Settings.
- If you are setting controls without the phone app, press X and select Next.
- Choose Restriction Level.
- Select an age preset or Custom Settings, adjust the available restrictions, then save.
Age thresholds and labels depend on the software-rating organization and region selected on the system. Because the title does not identify a particular Mario game or region, check the exact game’s regional rating rather than assuming every Super Mario release has the same rating.

Set play-time limits and monitor activity in the app
Link the app
Download the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app using Nintendo’s links to the iOS App Store or Google Play Store. Link the app to the Switch, then open Parental Controls in the app to configure restrictions.
Nintendo’s FAQ says app use requires a supported smart device, an internet connection and a Nintendo Account belonging to someone aged 18 or older. Its listed minimums are iOS 16.0 and Android 8.0; device support can change, so check Nintendo’s FAQ if your device does not meet those versions or the app is unavailable.

Choose a time rule
The app supports daily play-time limits of up to six hours, different limits for different days, and bedtime controls. You can choose whether gameplay is suspended when time expires or whether the console only displays a notification. If a play-time limit and bedtime are both active, whichever is reached first applies.

Activity can be reviewed by user in the app, although some games that do not ask players to select a profile may report combined play time. Nintendo lists app version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026, as adding shared controls for two parents or guardians, so each can view activity and set daily limits from their own device and app. See Nintendo’s app update information.

Allow a Mario game past the software restriction
The app lets you add selected games to an allow list so they can launch without entering the parental-controls PIN required by the restricted-software setting. Allow-listing does not exempt a game from the daily play-time limit.
This can be useful when the console’s age restriction blocks a title you have reviewed and want to permit. It changes the software restriction outcome for that selected game; it does not make other restrictions or account settings disappear.

Set communication restrictions carefully
Nintendo’s setup guide allows communication restrictions to be applied to all software or to individual software where supported. The exact online, communication and user-generated-content features depend on the specific game. The title “Super Mario” alone is not enough to determine which controls apply, so check the game’s regional listing and its own settings before relying on a communication restriction.
Understand what these controls do not cover
Parental Controls settings on the console are generally shared across users. Nintendo’s FAQ states: “The Play-Time Limit is set for the console and therefore restricts all individual users of the system equally.” The app can show activity by user in supported cases, but this does not create separate time limits for each player.

Nintendo Account settings are separate from console restrictions. Use the account settings for eShop purchase or viewing restrictions, friend suggestions and third-party information sharing; changing the Switch’s restriction level is not a substitute for those account-level controls.
