To set up parental controls on Xbox, give your child a separate Microsoft account, add it to your Microsoft family group, then manage the child’s content, screen time, online interactions and purchases through the Xbox Family Settings app or Microsoft family account website. Keep the child signed out when they finish: time can count while they are signed in, even if the console is idle.
Before you start: use a separate child account
Xbox recommends setting up a child Microsoft account rather than letting a child play through an adult’s account. Add the child to your Microsoft family group; Xbox describes the family group as a free service that provides access to family features. A parent in the family group is needed to change a child account’s Xbox privacy and online settings. See Xbox family settings for the control categories and family-group overview.
You can manage Xbox-specific controls in the Xbox Family Settings app or at account.microsoft.com/family. Microsoft also documents time-limit workflows in the Microsoft Family Safety app and family website. Labels and feature placement can vary across app builds, locales and operating systems, so use the current interface rather than relying on an older console menu walkthrough.
Set up the child’s Xbox controls
- Add the child to your family group. Create or use the child’s Microsoft account, then add it to your Microsoft family group. Confirm the child is using that profile on the Xbox.
- Open family management. Sign in as the parent in the Xbox Family Settings app or at account.microsoft.com/family, then select the child’s account.
- Choose content limits. Set an age-appropriate content level and review individual game approvals or blocks where offered. Rating-based controls can help restrict mature content; consult the current app or account interface for the available options. ESRB’s Xbox parental-controls guide explains rating concepts, but its console navigation labels may be historical rather than current.
- Set Xbox screen-time rules. Choose the allowed hours and daily allowance for the Xbox device. Schedules can differ by day. Screen-time limits apply to devices connected to the family group.
- Set limits for a particular game or app if needed. In the Microsoft Family Safety app or family website, select the child and then the app or game to set a daily allowance and permitted time windows. These limits can vary by day. Microsoft’s app and game limits guide describes the workflow.
- Review online interaction permissions. Set privacy and communication choices, including multiplayer, friends and other social interactions. Xbox also provides family controls for managing a child’s friend list and communications.
- Require approval for purchases. Turn on purchase approval, often presented as “Ask a Parent,” so a child must request permission for purchases. You can also add account funds if a managed balance suits your family’s approach.
- Check activity and adjust settings. Review available activity reporting and change the rules as the child’s needs change. Xbox describes activity reporting as part of its family controls.
Choose controls by what you want to manage
| Control | What it governs | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| Content maturity | Age-appropriate content and, where available, approval or blocking of individual titles. | Xbox Family Settings or the Microsoft family account website. |
| Xbox screen time | Allowed hours and a daily time allowance for the Xbox device; schedules can vary by day. | Family time settings; see Microsoft’s screen-time guide. |
| App or game time | A daily allowance and permitted windows for a selected app or game, which can vary by day. | Microsoft Family Safety app or family website. |
| Online contact | Privacy, communication, friends, multiplayer and other social permissions. | Xbox family privacy and online settings. |
| Spending | Purchase approval and, if you choose, a managed account balance. | Xbox family purchase settings. |
Make screen-time limits work as expected
Xbox screen-time counting depends on the child being signed in. Have the child sign out when finished, rather than leaving the profile active while the console is idle or someone else plays. Otherwise, the child’s allowance may be used up. Microsoft’s screen-time guidance explains the sign-in and connected-device conditions.

Activity reports and enforced limits may not appear to match exactly: idle time while signed in can count toward a limit without appearing in usage reports in the same way. Microsoft outlines this distinction in its Family Safety troubleshooting guide.
Troubleshoot common Xbox family-control issues
- A limit does not seem to apply: Check that the child is signed in to the child profile and that the Xbox is connected to the family group. Device schedules apply to connected devices.
- The child’s time runs out while someone else is playing: The child profile may have remained signed in. Sign it out when the child is done.
- A game is blocked when another family member is signed in: Microsoft says the youngest child’s age restriction may govern games when multiple users are signed in. A parent can bypass the restriction or sign out the younger account; see Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance.
- Usage reporting looks lower than the time enforced: Signed-in idle time can count toward the limit but may not be reflected equivalently in reports.
- You cannot change privacy or online settings: Confirm that the child is in your Microsoft family group and that you are signed in as a parent or organizer with permission to manage the account.
Review the settings as your child’s needs change
Use the family controls to revisit content maturity, schedules, online permissions and purchase approval when circumstances change. Xbox’s December 17, 2025 family-settings guidance describes remote controls for screen time, content, purchases, communication and activity reports.
