The setup depends on your controller. A standard DualSense lets you remap buttons globally and change trigger-effect strength in PS5 settings. A DualSense Edge adds named custom profiles with profile-specific button assignments, stick and trigger deadzones, vibration, and trigger-effect intensity. The Access controller uses a separate Profile Library with controller slots. Choose the section for your hardware first; the menu paths and switching methods are not interchangeable.
Identify which PS5 controller workflow you need
PS5 does not provide one universal profile system for every controller. Your hardware determines whether settings are global or saved as switchable profiles.

| Controller | Where settings live | What you can save or change | How switching works |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard DualSense | Settings > Accessibility for button assignments; Settings > Accessories for trigger-effect intensity | System-level button remapping and general trigger-effect strength | Changes apply as general controller settings; no Edge-style named profile library is documented |
| DualSense Edge | Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles | Named profiles containing button assignments, stick sensitivity/deadzone, trigger deadzone, vibration intensity, and trigger-effect intensity | Assign profiles to shortcuts and hold Fn plus an action button while playing |
| Access controller | Settings > Accessories > Access controller > Profile Library | Profiles for controller orientation, button assignments, and stick sensitivity/deadzone | Assign profiles to controller slots and press the profile button to cycle through them |
If you only need a different layout or less resistance from the triggers, a standard DualSense is sufficient. You do not need an Edge controller for basic remapping. Edge is relevant when you want several saved configurations and quick switching during a game. Access controller has its own accessibility-oriented profile and slot design.

Plan the change before opening Settings
Decide whether you are changing a button’s function, the physical range that produces an input, or the feel of the controller. Those are separate jobs. Button assignments change which action a button sends. Stick and trigger deadzones change the input range. Trigger-effect intensity changes resistance or feedback, while vibration intensity changes vibration. Keeping those categories separate makes troubleshooting much easier.

Also decide whether the change should apply everywhere or only in one situation. A standard DualSense is suited to one system-level layout. Edge profiles are better when, for example, one layout is for a shooter and another is for a racing game. Access controller profiles are organized around orientation, assignments, and slots rather than Edge’s Fn shortcuts.
Remap buttons on a standard DualSense
Button remapping for the regular DualSense is in Accessibility, not Accessories. This changes the controller assignment at the system level.
- Open Settings on the PS5 home screen.
- Select Accessibility.
- Choose Controllers.
- Open Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller.
- Select the physical button you want to change.
- Choose the function that should replace it.
- Select Apply.
The selected replacement is then used by the PS5 and games that follow the system mapping. If a game has its own controller-remapping menu, that game can introduce a second layer of assignments. When behavior does not match your layout, inspect the game’s controller settings before changing the PS5 mapping again.
When system remapping is the right tool
- Use it for a single layout that should apply across games.
- Use it when you do not need separate configurations for different genres or players.
- Remember that this menu is for the standard DualSense; Edge profile editing uses a different path.
Write down the intended replacement before you begin if you are changing several buttons. After selecting Apply, test each changed control in a game rather than assuming that the on-screen selection matches the game’s own terminology. If only one title behaves differently, its internal mapping is the more likely source of the discrepancy.
Turn down or change DualSense trigger effects
Trigger-effect intensity controls how strong the adaptive resistance or other trigger feedback feels. It is not the same as a trigger deadzone, which changes when the game begins reading the press.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Accessories.
- Select Controller (General).
- Choose Trigger Effect Intensity.
- Select the intensity you want.
For a standard DualSense, this is a general controller setting rather than a named, per-game profile. Lower it if resistance is uncomfortable or distracting; raise it when you want stronger feedback in supported games. The setting changes effect strength, not the physical range required to produce an input.
Changing this value does not remap L2 or R2 and does not create a saved Edge-style configuration. If you later use an Edge controller, its trigger-effect value can be part of each custom profile instead of remaining one general setting.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Create a custom profile on DualSense Edge
DualSense Edge profiles are created from the PS5 Accessories menu. A profile can hold several controller adjustments together, so you can make one layout for a shooter, another for a racing game, or a more comfortable arrangement for longer sessions.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose DualSense Edge Wireless Controller.
- Open Custom Profiles.
- Select Create Custom Profile.
- Enter a profile name and select OK.
- Choose the setting you want to customize.
PlayStation lists these profile settings: Button Assignments, Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone, Trigger Deadzone, Vibration Intensity, and Trigger Effect Intensity. A newly created profile appears in Unassigned Profiles until you connect it to a shortcut.
Give profiles useful names
Name a profile for its purpose, such as a game type or a comfort setting, rather than relying on the creation order. The name does not change any controls, but it makes the assignment list easier to understand when several profiles are unassigned or when you return to Settings after a long break. Keep a note of which action button is assigned to each profile until the shortcuts become familiar.

Assign an Edge profile to a shortcut
- In Custom Profiles, find the profile under Unassigned Profiles.
- Select Assign beside the profile.
- Choose one of the available action-button shortcuts.
During play, hold the Edge’s Fn button and press the action button assigned to the profile. Fn plus triangle is the default-profile shortcut and cannot be changed. Your created profiles can use the other three action-button shortcuts. This lets you change configurations without leaving the game to open Settings.
Creating a profile and assigning a profile are separate steps. If a profile remains under Unassigned Profiles, it is saved but does not have one of the quick-switch combinations. If the wrong setup appears during play, check the shortcut assignment list rather than recreating the profile.
Customize DualSense Edge button assignments
- Open the Edge profile you want to edit.
- Choose Customize Button Assignments.
- Select the physical button.
- Choose its replacement function.
- Select Apply.
Edge remapping has documented limits that matter when designing a layout:
- The Fn button cannot be reassigned.
- Circle and cross must always be assigned.
- L2 and R2 can be swapped with each other.
- You cannot give another button an L2 or R2 trigger function.
- You cannot assign multiple functions to L2 or R2.
These restrictions mean a profile can move many actions, but it cannot turn every button into a trigger or remove the required circle and cross assignments. If a game also remaps controls internally, the two mapping layers can conflict.
When designing a profile, start with the actions you use most often, then test the remaining buttons. A profile can be perfectly valid in the Edge menu and still feel wrong in a particular game if that game has its own remapping layer. Check both layers before concluding that the controller profile failed to save.

Understand Edge stick and trigger controls
Stick sensitivity and deadzone
Edge profiles include Stick Sensitivity/Deadzone. Use this when you want the sticks to respond differently in a particular profile, such as a faster response for aiming or a larger deadzone to reduce unwanted movement. The profile stores the adjustment, so switching profiles also switches the stick behavior.
Test stick changes in the game where you intend to use them. A setting that feels appropriate for one title may feel too quick or too slow in another. If you switch profiles and the stick response changes, confirm that the selected shortcut activated the intended profile before adjusting the values again.
Trigger deadzone: the input range
Trigger Deadzone determines the portion of L2 or R2 travel that the game treats as input. It controls both where registration begins and where the input reaches its maximum.
PlayStation’s example uses a range from 30 to 70. Pressing deeper than 30 begins registering, and 70 is the maximum. Presses shallower than 30 or deeper than 70 do not register within that configured range. The Edge interface includes a playtest, and it can apply the same values to the left and right triggers.
A trigger deadzone is useful when you need a shorter effective pull or want to exclude a small amount of accidental travel. It changes the input signal’s range; it does not make the trigger-effect resistance stronger or weaker.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
Use the playtest while changing the range, and decide whether both triggers should match. Applying identical settings to left and right is available when you want symmetrical behavior; separate values are useful when the two triggers serve different purposes. Always check the result in the target game because the game may interpret the trigger signal in its own way.
Trigger-effect intensity: the feel of the pull
Trigger Effect Intensity changes the strength of the DualSense trigger effect. On Edge, this can be stored separately in each profile. For example, one profile can use stronger effects while another reduces them for a game in which rapid trigger presses matter more than resistance.
If the trigger reaches the intended in-game action but feels tiring, change intensity. If the action starts registering at the wrong point, change deadzone. These adjustments can be made in the same profile, but they solve different problems.
Vibration intensity
Vibration Intensity is also a profile setting on Edge. Adjusting it changes the controller’s vibration behavior for that profile, independently of the trigger deadzone and trigger-effect controls.
Trigger deadzone versus trigger-effect intensity
These names are easy to confuse, but they solve different problems:
| Control | What it changes | Where it appears | Typical reason to adjust it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Trigger deadzone | The L2/R2 input range: when a press starts registering and where it reaches maximum input | DualSense Edge custom profiles | Change how much physical travel produces an in-game response |
| Trigger-effect intensity | The strength of the adaptive trigger effect or resistance | General controller settings for standard DualSense; individual Edge profiles | Make the trigger feel lighter or stronger without changing the input range |
If the game responds too early or too late in the pull, adjust the deadzone. If the game responds at the right point but the resistance feels too strong, adjust effect intensity instead. Changing one does not replace the other.
Set up Access controller profiles
Access controller uses a separate Profile Library and should not be treated as an Edge profile with different hardware. Its workflow is designed around controller orientation, button assignments, stick sensitivity/deadzone, and controller slots.
- Open Settings.
- Select Accessories.
- Choose Access controller.
- Open Profile Library.
- Create a profile or select an existing profile to edit.
- Configure the controller orientation and button assignments, plus stick sensitivity/deadzone as needed.
- Assign the profile to a controller slot.
PlayStation says the PS5 can store up to 30 custom Access controller profiles. You can assign up to three favorites to slots on the controller, then press the controller’s profile button to cycle through the profiles assigned to those slots. The slot system is specific to Access controller and is different from Edge’s Fn-plus-action-button shortcuts.
A profile in the library is not automatically part of the quick cycle. After editing, verify its slot assignment and test the profile button. If you need more than three readily available choices, keep the others in the library and assign different favorites when your setup changes.
Standard DualSense, Edge, or Access controller: which setup fits?
Choose based on how often you need to change settings, not on the assumption that basic remapping requires a premium controller.

| Need | Standard DualSense | DualSense Edge | Access controller |
|---|---|---|---|
| System-level button remapping | Yes, through Accessibility | Yes, within each custom profile | Profiles include button assignments |
| Named saved profiles | Not documented in the cited standard-controller settings | Yes | Yes, in Profile Library |
| Quick in-game switching | No profile shortcut documented | Fn plus an assigned action button | Profile button cycles assigned slots |
| Per-profile trigger deadzone | No | Yes | Profile controls differ from Edge; use Access controller’s Profile Library |
| Trigger-effect intensity | General controller setting | Stored per profile | Use the Access controller profile options documented for that hardware |
The practical dividing line is saved, switchable configuration. Standard DualSense handles global remapping and general trigger-effect intensity without requiring another controller. Edge adds profile storage and shortcut switching, plus per-profile stick and trigger controls. Access controller should be evaluated on its own profile library and slot workflow rather than compared as if it were an Edge variant.

The remap appears to do nothing
First confirm that you selected Apply after choosing the replacement. Then check the game’s own controller settings. PlayStation specifically warns that a game’s assignments can conflict with DualSense Edge profile assignments. Disable or revise the in-game mapping temporarily to determine which layer is overriding the other.
Also confirm that you edited the controller you are actually using. Standard DualSense remapping is under Accessibility, while Edge and Access controller settings are under their respective Accessories pages. Opening the wrong controller menu can make it seem as though a setting is missing.
The wrong Edge profile activates
Return to Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles and check which profile is assigned to each shortcut. Remember that holding Fn and pressing the assigned action button is required. Fn plus triangle always selects the default profile, so it cannot be reassigned to a created profile.
If a created profile is still in Unassigned Profiles, assign it before testing the shortcut. Test one shortcut at a time and note the action button associated with each profile.

Decide whether the problem is resistance or registration. Resistance is controlled by Trigger Effect Intensity. The point at which the game begins reading L2 or R2, and the point at which it reaches maximum input, are controlled by Trigger Deadzone on Edge. Use the Edge playtest while adjusting the deadzone, and check both triggers if you did not apply identical values to left and right.
An Access controller profile is unavailable
Open the Access controller’s Profile Library and verify that the profile was assigned to a controller slot. Creating a profile alone does not put it in the slot cycle. Only the profiles assigned to the controller’s available slots are reached with the profile button.
Settings change after switching profiles
That is expected when the profiles contain different stick, trigger, vibration, or effect values. Check the active profile before comparing behavior. For Edge, use the assigned Fn shortcut; for Access controller, use the profile button to cycle through assigned slots. A game’s own controller settings can still add another layer on top of either setup.

The PC app is an additional management route, not a replacement for understanding the Edge shortcuts. Once the profile is on the controller, switching on PS5 still depends on the Fn combination assigned to it. Keep the profile names and shortcut assignments consistent so you can identify the active setup on either device.
A practical setup sequence
For the fewest surprises, configure in this order:
- Identify whether you are using standard DualSense, DualSense Edge, or Access controller.
- Set the button layout in the correct menu for that controller.
- On Edge, adjust stick sensitivity/deadzone and trigger deadzone before fine-tuning feel.
- Set trigger-effect intensity and vibration separately; they do not alter input ranges.
- Apply the changes and test every remapped button in the target game.
- On Edge, assign the profile to a shortcut and test switching with Fn plus the selected action button.
- On Access controller, assign the profile to a slot and test cycling with the profile button.
- If an input is still unexpected, inspect the game’s own controller mapping for a conflicting assignment.
This order separates assignment errors from feel adjustments. It also confirms that a profile is both saved and reachable before you rely on it during play. If you later change one setting, retest the affected control and the shortcut or slot used to activate the configuration.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I remap buttons on a regular PS5 DualSense?
Go to Settings > Accessibility > Controllers > Custom Button Assignments for DualSense Wireless Controller. Select a physical button, choose its replacement function, and select Apply.
Recommended Free Tools
Can a standard DualSense save named profiles?
The documented standard DualSense settings provide system-level remapping and a general trigger-effect setting, not the named, switchable profile library available on DualSense Edge.
How do I lower DualSense adaptive trigger resistance?
Open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Trigger Effect Intensity, then choose a lower intensity. This changes the feel of the effect, not the trigger input range.
How do I create a DualSense Edge profile?
Open Settings > Accessories > DualSense Edge Wireless Controller > Custom Profiles, select Create Custom Profile, enter a name, select OK, and choose the settings to customize.
How do I switch Edge profiles while playing?
Assign the profile under Custom Profiles, then hold Fn and press its assigned action button. Fn plus triangle selects the default profile and cannot be reassigned; created profiles use the other three action-button shortcuts.
What is the difference between trigger deadzone and trigger-effect intensity?
Trigger deadzone changes when L2 or R2 starts registering and where it reaches maximum input. Trigger-effect intensity changes adaptive resistance or feedback strength. They are separate controls.
Why does an Edge remap conflict with a game?
The game may have its own controller assignment layer. Check the game’s controller settings and temporarily remove or revise the in-game mapping to see which assignment is taking precedence.
How many Access controller profiles can I save?
PlayStation says the PS5 can store up to 30 custom Access controller profiles. Up to three favorites can be assigned to controller slots and cycled with the controller’s profile button.
Can I manage DualSense Edge profiles on a PC?
Yes. PlayStation Accessories on Windows can create, edit, switch, and save Edge profile settings. Follow PlayStation’s current PC connection instructions, then verify the active profile and in-game behavior.
