Enable FiveM RCON by adding set rcon_password "YOURPASSWORD" to the server.cfg that your FXServer actually loads, then restart the server and connect with an RCON client over UDP. RCON stays disabled when no password is set. The external UDP port is not universal, so use the port supplied by your host or your own network configuration rather than assuming a default.
What you need before enabling RCON
RCON is a remote console interface: an RCON client sends administrative commands to your running FXServer, and the server returns the command response. It is useful when you need command-line administration without joining the game, but it is not a replacement for every management function.

- Access to the active configuration: You need permission to edit the
server.cfgused by the FXServer instance you intend to control. A machine can contain several configuration files, so identify the one passed to the process or selected by your hosting panel. - A restart path: The setting must be loaded when FXServer starts. Have console, panel, or service-manager access that lets you restart the server cleanly after saving the file.
- A suitable RCON client: Use a client that supports FiveM FXServer RCon and UDP. A client limited to TCP cannot connect to this service.
- Network access: You must know the address and UDP port exposed by the host, plus any cloud, router, or operating-system firewall rules in front of the server.
- A secret that can remain private: Prepare a long, unique password that is not used for the game panel, operating-system account, database, or other service.
If a managed host supplies a control panel, its file editor and restart button may be the normal configuration workflow. On a self-hosted machine, edit the file through your usual deployment process instead of changing a generated copy that the server never reads.

1. Open the configuration FXServer loads
Locate the server.cfg associated with the running FXServer instance. If you operate multiple servers, check each instance’s startup configuration so that you do not enable RCON on one server while attempting to connect to another. The relevant file is the one loaded at startup, not necessarily the first file named server.cfg that appears in a file browser.

2. Add the password convar
Add this line on its own:
set rcon_password "YOURPASSWORD"The official Cfx.re vanilla configuration example describes the same line as the setting to uncomment and change. Replace YOURPASSWORD with your own secret; do not leave the example text in place. The set form defines the server convar and the quoted value keeps spaces or special characters together.
3. Use a unique, high-entropy password
Choose a password that is long enough to resist guessing and unique to this server. A randomly generated passphrase or password manager entry is preferable to a server name, owner name, Discord handle, or a word reused elsewhere. Treat the value as an administrative credential: anyone who obtains it can attempt to issue RCON commands.
Do not put the password in a public Git repository, paste it into a screenshot, or include it in a support post or chat log. If a configuration file is version-controlled, use your deployment system’s secret handling rather than committing the literal value.

Save the configuration, then restart the server through its normal panel, service, or process-management workflow. RCON is enabled by the value that FXServer reads during startup; editing a file without restarting does not reliably apply the change. Wait until the server has finished its normal startup before testing the connection.
When you later remove or unset the password, RCON is disabled. Keep that behavior in mind when moving between maintenance and production configurations.

5. Connect with an RCON client
Enter the server address, the applicable UDP port, and the exact password in your RCON client. The address can be a public IP, hostname, or private address depending on where the client runs. If the host provides a nonstandard external port or a port-forwarding rule, enter the externally reachable value, not an internal-only port.
After authentication, issue only a harmless command that you already understand for your server and confirm that the client receives a response. Avoid testing with destructive actions such as kicking all players, stopping resources, or shutting down the process.
Which port does FiveM RCON use?
FXServer RCon uses UDP. The official server-command documentation does not establish one universal external RCON port for every FiveM installation. Port numbers can differ by host, container, panel allocation, router mapping, or custom server layout, so do not copy a supposedly universal default from an unrelated guide.
Find the port you should enter
- Check the port allocation shown by your game-server host or control panel.
- For a self-hosted server, inspect the network and forwarding configuration you created for this instance and record which public UDP port reaches the FXServer machine.
- If a router or cloud firewall translates ports, distinguish the public (client-facing) port from the private destination port.
- Use that public UDP value in the RCON client and in the corresponding firewall rules.
Keep a written inventory of the address, public UDP port, private destination (if any), and server instance it belongs to. This prevents an otherwise correct password from being tested against the wrong endpoint.
Firewall and network configuration
Authentication cannot succeed if packets never reach FXServer. Allow the required UDP traffic at every layer between the client and the server:

- Host firewall: Permit inbound UDP on the RCON port for the FXServer process or machine.
- Cloud firewall or security group: Add an inbound UDP rule when the server is behind a cloud provider’s network controls.
- Router or edge firewall: Forward the chosen public UDP port to the server’s private address when the machine is behind a home or office router.
- Panel or container mapping: Confirm that the allocated external port is mapped to the correct container or process.
A TCP-only rule does not match the documented RCon transport. Likewise, opening a game port does not automatically open the separate port you use for RCON. Restrict the source addresses when your environment permits it; allowing only your administration network is safer than exposing the service broadly.

Diagnose a failed RCON connection
The client times out
A timeout usually means the client cannot reach the endpoint. Recheck the hostname or IP, the externally exposed port, and the UDP protocol selection. Then trace the path from the outside inward: cloud rule, router forwarding, host firewall, and finally the server process. If the server is behind carrier-grade NAT or another network you do not control, an inbound connection may not be possible without a host-provided public endpoint.
The client reports connection refused or no service
Confirm that FXServer was restarted after the configuration change and that the process loaded the file you edited. Verify that the password line is not still commented out and that it uses the expected set rcon_password syntax. Check the startup output or panel logs for configuration errors, and make sure the port belongs to this server instance rather than another process on the machine.
The client reaches the server but authentication fails
Copy the password exactly, including capitalization and punctuation, and remove accidental leading or trailing spaces in the client. Check that you did not change the file after the last restart or connect to a different server sharing the same hostname. If the credential may have been exposed, replace it in the configuration, restart FXServer, and update the client instead of repeatedly retrying a compromised value.
The client connects but commands do not work
Use an RCon client that implements UDP and is intended for FXServer. A generic tool designed for a different game’s RCON protocol may authenticate incorrectly or format commands in a way FXServer does not accept. Confirm that the command is available on your server and that your account or server state does not impose a separate restriction. Do not infer that a successful network connection grants every function provided by txAdmin or by in-game administration resources.

The setting disappears after a panel update
Some managed workflows regenerate configuration files. Compare the file you edited with the file referenced by the panel’s startup settings, and use the provider’s documented configuration editor or persistent variable mechanism when available. After every regeneration or migration, verify that the password line remains in the active configuration and restart before testing.
RCON versus txAdmin
RCON and txAdmin are related administrative options, but they are not the same service. Setting rcon_password specifically enables RCON; it does not configure txAdmin. txAdmin is included with FXServer and provides a broader web interface for management and monitoring, including a configuration editor. Its documented default HTTP port is 40120, which is separate from the UDP transport used by RCon.

When RCON is the better fit
Choose RCON when you already use a trusted console client, need lightweight command execution, or have an automation workflow built around console commands. It has a small configuration footprint: one convar, a UDP path, and a secret.
When txAdmin is the better fit
Use txAdmin when you want a browser-based view of the server, configuration editing, monitoring, and the other management functions provided by its web panel. You can run txAdmin without treating it as an RCON replacement, and enabling RCON does not remove the need to secure txAdmin separately.
Can both be enabled?
Yes. They are separate interfaces with different setup steps and network paths. If you operate both, document the UDP RCON endpoint and the txAdmin HTTP endpoint independently, apply least-privilege firewall rules to each, and use different credentials where the respective systems support them.

Security practices for a production server
- Protect the secret: Store it in a password manager or deployment secret store and keep it out of repositories, screenshots, tickets, and chat.
- Rotate after exposure: Change the value in
server.cfg, restart FXServer, and update every authorized client if the password was disclosed or sent to the wrong person. - Limit network reach: Restrict inbound UDP to known administration addresses where practical. Do not rely on the password as the only control.
- Separate environments: Use different credentials and ports for development, staging, and production so that a test disclosure cannot immediately reach the live server.
- Audit access: Keep track of who has the password and remove access when staff or contractors no longer administer the server.
- Review logs: Investigate unexpected restarts, command activity, or repeated authentication attempts through the logging facilities available on your host and server setup.
- Secure the management alternative: If txAdmin is enabled, protect its web endpoint and account independently; securing RCON does not secure the panel.
Self-hosting or managed hosting?
Cfx.re lists game-server hosting providers as an available setup path. Managed hosting can take care of operating-system maintenance, firewall rules, process supervision, and port allocation, which reduces the amount of infrastructure work required to expose RCON. Self-hosting gives you direct control of the FXServer machine, network rules, configuration files, and deployment process.
For managed FiveM hosting, Godlike.Host provides FiveM game-server hosting with its own Pterodactyl-based game panel, SFTP/FTP access, and a personal firewall for player access and IP filtering. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).

Whichever route you choose, the RCON procedure is the same in principle: place the password convar in the active configuration, restart, identify the provider- or administrator-assigned UDP endpoint, and secure the network path.

Rotate the password
- Generate a new unique secret.
- Replace the existing value in the active
server.cfg. - Save the file and restart FXServer.
- Update only the authorized RCON clients and verify one controlled connection.
- Invalidate copies of the old value and investigate how it was exposed if the rotation was prompted by a leak.
Disable RCON
Remove the password setting or leave it unset, then restart FXServer. Because RCON is disabled when no password is set, clients should no longer authenticate after the restarted process loads the configuration. You can also close the corresponding UDP firewall and forwarding rules when the service is no longer needed.
