To install mods on a dedicated Project Zomboid server, stop the server, edit the active profile in Zomboid/Server/<profile>.ini, put numeric Steam Workshop item IDs in WorkshopItems=, put each mod’s internal ID in Mods=, save, and restart. The server downloads the Workshop content and activates only the internal IDs listed in the second field.

That distinction explains most failed installations: a Workshop ID tells the server what to obtain, while a Mod ID tells the game what to load. Both fields, the correct profile, a compatible game build, and the correct load order are required.

Choose the server type before installing anything
The installation method depends on how the world is hosted. A setting in a player’s client does not automatically configure a dedicated server.

The procedure below is for a dedicated server. If you are hosting through the in-game interface, use the game’s Mod Manager instead; changing a dedicated profile will not change that listen server.

What the two configuration fields do
WorkshopItems=: content to download
WorkshopItems contains the numeric Steam Workshop item ID for every item the server should obtain. The number is the item identifier in that Workshop page’s URL. It identifies the published Workshop entry, not necessarily the name the game uses internally.
Mods=: content to activate
Mods contains each mod’s exact internal identifier. This is normally shown in the mod’s information or in its mod.info metadata. It may differ completely from the Workshop item’s title and from the numeric Workshop ID. Spelling and capitalization must match the metadata.

The server can download an item without enabling it if the Workshop ID is present but its internal ID is absent from Mods=. Conversely, listing an internal ID without obtaining the corresponding Workshop item can produce a missing-mod error. Treat the two lines as a pair: one requests the files, the other turns the mod on.
Prepare a safe installation
Back up the server before changing a mod set
Copy the active Zomboid folder, or use your host’s verified backup function, before adding, removing, or changing mods on an established world. A backup gives you a recovery point if a map, dependency, or save behaves incorrectly. Keep the copy separate from the live directory and label it with the date and the mod change.
Confirm the server’s current build
Each Workshop item must support the Project Zomboid build running on the server. A client and server on different builds can fail to connect even when the mod list is identical. Stale Workshop content can also prevent a successful connection. Check the mod author’s compatibility notes and make sure every player uses the same game build as the server.
Collect the identifiers in a worksheet
Before editing the file, make a small list with four columns: mod name, Workshop item ID, internal Mod ID, and required load position or dependencies. This prevents a common copy-and-paste mistake in which a numeric Workshop ID is placed in Mods=.

Install mods on a dedicated server: exact procedure
1. Stop the server completely
Shut down the dedicated server and wait for its process and console to close. Editing an active profile while the server is running can be overwritten on shutdown, and a restart is required before the new list is read.
2. Identify the profile that is actually launched
Dedicated-server profiles are stored under Zomboid/Server/. Find the INI file whose profile name matches the server you launch. For example, if the launch command or host panel starts a profile named MyServer, edit the corresponding MyServer.ini, not a similarly named test file.
Editing the wrong profile is one of the most common reasons a change appears to do nothing. If your host panel lets you select a server name, compare that name with the INI filename before making any changes.
3. Choose compatible Workshop items
Open each mod’s Steam Workshop page and read its compatibility, dependency, and load-order instructions. Do not assume that two similarly named items are interchangeable. If a mod requires a library, map, framework, or companion item, plan to add the required items together and in the order the author specifies.

Copy the number in each Workshop page’s URL. Put those numbers into the WorkshopItems= list. Use the exact list syntax already present in the profile; do not add titles, quotation marks, or descriptive text unless the existing configuration format explicitly uses them.
5. Record the exact internal Mod IDs
Find the internal identifier in the mod information or mod.info. A title such as “Expanded Storage” is not proof that the internal ID is ExpandedStorage. Copy the identifier exactly, including punctuation and capitalization, and enter it in Mods=.

6. Edit both lines
Open the active INI file in a plain-text editor. Add the numeric Workshop IDs to WorkshopItems= and the matching internal IDs to Mods=. Preserve the separators and formatting used by the profile. If the author specifies an order, keep the corresponding Workshop and Mod entries in that order and include dependencies before the mods that require them.
Do not replace unrelated server settings while making this change. A minimal edit is easier to review and troubleshoot.
7. Save the file and restart
Save the INI, start the server, and allow it time to download or refresh Workshop content. Watch the console or server log during startup. If startup fails, begin with the first fatal error line; changing unrelated settings before identifying that line usually makes diagnosis harder.
8. Test with a client
Connect from a client running the same game build. The client should receive or already have the same mod set. Test the affected features, maps, and items in a controlled session before inviting the whole group back to the main world.
How to verify that a mod is really active
Check the profile, not only the download
A successful Workshop download proves only that the server obtained files. Confirm that every intended internal ID appears in Mods= and that each spelling and case matches the mod metadata.
Check the startup output
Read the startup console or log for missing-mod, dependency, or load errors. The first fatal line usually identifies the failing item or configuration stage. Later errors may be consequences of that first failure.

Check from a client
Have a test player connect and exercise the mod. A mod may load while a map or dependency remains misconfigured, so test map access, new items, recipes, or other features the author documents. Do this on a backup or disposable world when the mod changes world data.
Load order, maps, and dependencies
Follow the author’s required order
Some mods are independent; others require a framework, shared library, map package, or compatibility patch first. The Workshop page or included metadata may specify an order. Preserve that order in the server’s lists rather than sorting entries alphabetically.
Add related items as a set
If a mod names dependencies, add every required Workshop item and every required internal ID. Downloading only the headline mod can leave the server with a missing dependency even though the headline item’s files are present.
Treat map changes as a save decision
Map additions and other world-affecting mods may not apply retroactively to an existing save. Back up the world before testing. If the mod’s documentation requires a new world, create one rather than assuming the existing map will update safely. If the result is wrong, restore the backup or move the test to a fresh world.
Client and server alignment
Every player needs a compatible game build and the same effective mod set and order as the server. Compare all of the following when a player is rejected or experiences desynchronization:
- The Project Zomboid build on the server and each client.
- The numeric Workshop IDs requested by the server.
- The internal IDs enabled in
Mods=. - The order required by the mod author, especially for maps and dependencies.
- Whether a client has stale or incomplete Workshop content.
A player changing a personal Mod Manager list does not replace the dedicated server’s profile. The server remains the authority for its own Workshop and Mod settings.

Troubleshooting by symptom
The mod downloads but is not active
- Open the active profile under
Zomboid/Server/, not a different server’s INI. - Confirm that the mod’s exact internal ID is present in
Mods=. - Check spelling and capitalization against the mod’s metadata or
mod.info. - Restart the server after saving.
- Read the startup log for a dependency or load-order error.
The usual cause is a numeric Workshop ID in WorkshopItems= with no matching internal ID in Mods=.

The client is rejected or the game desynchronizes
Compare the server and client build first. Then compare Workshop IDs, internal IDs, and order. Remove stale client content only after confirming the server’s list is correct, and let the client obtain the exact items again. Do not solve a build mismatch by rearranging mod entries.
Changes appear to do nothing
Verify the profile name used by the launch command or hosting panel. If the edited file is not the active profile, the server will start with its old settings. Once the correct file is confirmed, save it and perform a full stop-and-start rather than relying on a running process to reload the list.
A map or dependency fails
Read the author’s dependency and load-order instructions, then add related items together. Test on a backup or disposable world. A map can require a particular order or a new world, and a missing library can make an otherwise valid mod fail during startup.
An existing save behaves oddly after the change
Stop testing on the live world. Restore the backup if necessary and consult the mod’s documentation about existing saves. Use a fresh world when the documentation says the mod is required at world creation or when the mod changes map data that cannot be added safely later.
Startup fails after an edit
Look for the first fatal console or log line, then undo only the last change if you need to isolate the cause. Check for a malformed list, a misspelled internal ID, a missing dependency, or an incompatible build. Avoid changing unrelated server options until the mod configuration is validated.
Removing or updating mods safely
Removing a mod
Back up the world, stop the server, remove the mod’s internal ID from Mods=, and remove its Workshop ID from WorkshopItems= if the server no longer needs to download it. Restart and test on the backup first. Removing a mod that created items, recipes, scripts, or map data can leave an existing save in an unexpected state.
Updating a mod
Check the author’s notes for compatibility and migration instructions. Keep the same identifiers unless the author explicitly changes them, restart the server so Workshop content refreshes, and test the updated version on a backup. If the update changes dependencies or order, revise both lists together.
Keeping an installation maintainable
- Keep a dated backup before every mod-set change.
- Maintain a written list of Workshop IDs, internal IDs, dependencies, and order.
- Make one logical change at a time so a failure has a clear cause.
- Record the server build and the date of each successful configuration.
- Test map and world-affecting additions away from the primary save.
- Tell players when the build or mod set changes so their clients can update before connecting.
When a managed server is a better fit
Manual installation is appropriate when you have file access and want direct control. A managed dedicated server can be more convenient when you prefer a control panel for installation, scheduled restarts, updates, and backups. Before choosing one, verify that it supports your Project Zomboid build (including Build 42 if that is the build you run), exposes the Workshop and Mod settings you need, provides usable backups, and documents its pricing and recovery process. Managed tools do not remove the need to understand the difference between a Workshop ID and a Mod ID; they only provide another interface for entering the same configuration.
