Steam Cloud is a separate, optional layer that syncs supported game files, so check whether your specific title supports it before relying on Cloud for progress.
Set text speed and reading controls in the game
Launch the visual novel and open its Settings, Preferences, or Config menu. Menu names and available controls differ by title, so treat the game’s own options as authoritative rather than expecting a standard Steam setting.
- Open the game’s settings or preferences menu.
- Adjust text speed until new dialogue appears at a comfortable pace.
- If offered, review auto-advance and skip behavior. These controls may affect how text progresses, but their names and functions are game-specific.
- Return to a scene and check that the chosen pace works for your reading.
Steam’s general client settings do not establish a universal text-speed control for visual novels. The Steam features for Cloud, overlay, and launch options serve different purposes.
Choose a display mode and check the fit
Use the game’s display settings to choose from the modes and resolutions it actually offers. Compare fullscreen and windowed mode for screen fit and ease of switching, then check that dialogue and interface elements are legible on the display you use. There is no single best mode or resolution for every visual novel.

If you are playing through Steam Link
For a cropped picture or bars while using Steam Link, Valve recommends trying an in-game 16:9 resolution such as 1920×1080 or 1280×720. If those options are unavailable, try windowed mode; if the problem remains, check the host computer’s desktop resolution. Steam Link identifies a mismatch between the game’s and display’s aspect ratios as one possible cause of bars. Understand in-game saves versus Steam Cloud
The game determines how you save, including whether it offers manual saves or autosaves. Steam Cloud is separate: it can synchronize supported game files, but the developer chooses which files are uploaded. A Cloud indicator on the game’s Steam Store page is a useful check, but do not assume that every kind of progress or settings file is synchronized. Check Cloud for a specific game
- Open the game’s Steam Store page and look for its Steam Cloud indicator.
- In your Library, right-click the game and choose Properties > General.
- Review that game’s Cloud Synchronization control. The global Cloud control is in Steam > Settings > Cloud.
If Cloud is disabled for a game, progress that would otherwise sync remains on the machine where it was made. Consider this before switching computers or relying on Cloud as a backup.
Review a Cloud conflict before choosing a copy
A Cloud conflict means the local and cloud copies differ; Steam cannot determine which one is the right progress to keep. Compare the timestamps in the conflict dialog with when and where you played, then choose the copy that matches your play history. The newer timestamp may indicate the latest progress, but it is not a substitute for checking. Steam warns that its ability to recover lost Cloud data may be limited.

Keep the overlay and launch options in their proper roles
The Steam Community Overlay is independent of a visual novel’s reading and save preferences. Steam documents enabling it globally at Steam > Settings > In-game, or per title at Library > right-click game > Properties > General. When supported and enabled, Shift+Tab is the default shortcut; individual games may use Steamworks features differently. See Steam Community Overlay support.
Do not copy launch options from generic advice unless you have a specific compatibility or recovery reason. Steam documents width, height, windowed, and fullscreen arguments, but notes engine-specific limits, including cases intended for Valve/Source or GoldSrc games. Those arguments are not established as universal visual-novel settings. Consult Steam’s launch-options guidance and use only options appropriate to your game.
