There is no Valve-documented way to make the Steam Machine’s built-in light bar react to game audio without a third-party tool. Valve says the bar is currently for system status and cannot be directly controlled by games or RGB apps. The documented community option is GabeCubeAura Audio Sync; avoiding it means using separate external lighting instead, and the sources reviewed do not establish how to make external lights sync with Steam Machine audio.
What the Steam Machine’s built-in light bar can do
Valve’s support guide says the light bar is currently set up to display system status and cannot be directly utilized by games or other apps with RGB functionality. That rules out a documented native setting for audio-reactive backlighting.
GabeCubeAura is a third-party plugin, not a Valve feature. Its author announced an Audio Sync mode for the Steam Machine’s 17 LEDs, describing it as processing game and system audio locally. Those capabilities are the project author’s claims, not an independently verified Valve specification.
Use GabeCubeAura Audio Sync on the built-in bar
The project author’s release post describes 10 audio patterns and nine one-click lighting presets, including Focus, Essential, Immersive, Festive, and Lights out. It also describes optional color sources and palettes. These are features reported by the author, and may change between releases.

Install the plugin
These are the author’s instructions for the release post; plugin versions and Decky menus can change. Check the project’s current release notes before installing.
- If Developer is missing: open Decky Settings → General and enable Developer Mode.
- Open Decky Settings → Developer → Install Plugin from ZIP.
- Select
GabeCubeAura-v1.3.2.zip, the ZIP filename specified in the author’s post. Use the current release’s ZIP if the project has since published a newer version.
Check for an update
For an existing installation, the post says to open GabeCubeAura → Updates → Check now. It also says the Stable channel checks automatically every 24 hours.

What Audio Sync analyzes
In a reply about surround sound, the plugin author said Audio Sync currently analyzes a two-channel stereo stream. The author explained that PipeWire normally remixes or downmixes active multichannel output to stereo first, so 5.1 or 7.1 content may be represented in that stream. The plugin does not analyze center, rear, or LFE channels separately. This is the author’s description of the implementation, not an independent compatibility test.
The sources do not establish measured sync latency, a supported SteamOS or Decky version range, or compatibility with every audio route. Check the project’s release notes and verify behavior with your own output setup rather than assuming every configuration will work.

If you want to avoid GabeCubeAura
On the evidence available, you cannot enable audio-reactive effects on the built-in bar through a documented Valve setting or another documented route. Separate external ambient lighting would be a different setup, not a way to control the Steam Machine’s integrated bar. The sources reviewed do not establish which external strips or controllers can sync with Steam Machine audio, so no particular product or configuration can be recommended as a verified solution.
