Steam Frame is designed to stream games wirelessly from a PC. Its included wireless adapter creates a direct 6GHz link between the headset and PC; Wi-Fi is a separate headset connection. For the exact first-run pairing and startup sequence, follow Valve’s Getting Started with Steam Frame video rather than guessing at button presses or menus.
What you need to connect Steam Frame to a PC
- A Steam Frame headset and its included wireless adapter. Valve says the adapter provides the direct 6GHz headset-to-PC link for streaming; you do not need to buy a separate adapter for the basic connection.
- A PC running the game you want to stream. In PC-streaming mode, the game runs on the computer and its audio and visuals are sent to the headset.
- Wi-Fi for the headset’s separate Wi-Fi connection. Valve describes Steam Frame as having two radios: one dedicated to streaming audio and visuals, and another for Wi-Fi.
Valve also describes Multi-Link Streaming, which routes data over available headset connections to improve streaming stability. That is a product feature description, not an independent performance guarantee.

Follow Valve’s first-run setup guide
Valve links two official setup resources: Part 1: Getting Started with Steam Frame and Part 2: More about Steam Frame Accessories. Use Part 1 for the exact startup and pairing sequence. The written product information does not specify button presses or menu paths, so it would be unreliable to infer them.

- Place the included wireless adapter where you can connect it to your PC, then use Valve’s Getting Started video for the precise connection and headset pairing instructions.
- Complete the headset’s first-run setup as shown in Valve’s guide. Follow its on-screen prompts rather than relying on an assumed menu name or sequence.
- Start the game on the PC and use the guide’s instructions to begin streaming to Steam Frame.
Valve calls the adapter plug-and-play, but its “No fuss, no setup; just games” wording is promotional copy, not a guarantee that every setup will be trouble-free.

PC streaming and standalone play are different modes

Valve describes Steam Frame as streaming-first, but also says it runs SteamOS and can run some games on the headset without an active PC connection. Whether a particular title supports standalone play is a separate question from whether it can be streamed from your PC.
If PC streaming shows Error 17
In a Valve Steam Frame community update dated October 1, 2026, Valve said SteamOS 0.4.3 beta included further VR streaming reliability improvements. The same update advised PC users to opt into SteamVR 2.18.2 or later to reduce Error 17 connection issues, and noted that SteamVR 2.18.2 was then available on the SteamVR beta branch.
