What the n8n–Telegram integration does
The integration connects Telegram’s Bot API to n8n workflows. A Telegram Trigger starts a workflow when the bot receives an update, such as a message. A Telegram action node can then send a reply, post a notification, process a callback flow, or perform another supported operation using the same bot credential.

The basic pattern is:
- A person sends a message or other update to your Telegram bot.
- Telegram delivers that update to n8n.
- The Telegram Trigger exposes the update data, including the chat identifier.
- Subsequent nodes use that identifier to reply or send a notification.
For a simple reply, one trigger and one Send Message node are enough. More involved workflows can add media processing, callback queries, approval steps, retries, or notifications to a group or channel.
What you need before configuring n8n
- A Telegram account with access to @BotFather.
- An n8n workspace or self-hosted instance where you can create credentials and workflows.
- A clear destination: a direct chat, private group, public channel, or private channel.
- For self-hosted webhook delivery, a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint.
- A plan for protecting the bot token. Telegram says that anyone who has the token has full control over the bot, so treat it as a password.
You do not need to create a separate credential for the trigger and the action node. The Telegram credential created in n8n can be selected by both.

Create a Telegram bot with @BotFather
Start the bot-creation command
- Open Telegram and search for the official @BotFather account.
- Open the conversation and send
/newbot. - Follow the prompts for a display name and a username.
- Copy the API token BotFather returns and store it in a password manager or another protected secret store.
Telegram’s own tutorial describes the same process: contact @BotFather, issue /newbot, and follow the prompts until a new token is provided.
Choose a valid username
The username must be 5–32 characters long, use Latin letters, numbers, or underscores, and end in bot. Telegram states that the username cannot be changed later, so check the spelling and branding before confirming it. The display name and username serve different purposes: the display name is what people see, while the username is the unique handle used to find the bot.
Protect or replace the token
Do not put the token in workflow text, screenshots, public repositories, issue reports, or chat messages. If it is exposed, use BotFather to revoke or regenerate it, replace the value in n8n, and test the workflow again. A token leak is not merely a configuration mistake; possession grants control of the bot.
Add the bot token to an n8n credential
- In n8n, open the credentials area and create a new Telegram credential.
- Paste the BotFather API token into the Access Token field.
- Save the credential.
- When you add a Telegram Trigger or Telegram action node, select this saved credential in the node’s credential selector.
Keep the token inside the credential rather than copying it into node parameters. This lets the trigger and action nodes share one secret and makes rotation easier if the token must be replaced.
Configure Telegram Trigger for incoming updates
Add and authenticate the trigger
- Create a new n8n workflow.
- Add a Telegram Trigger node.
- Select the Telegram credential containing the bot token.
- Choose the event that should start the workflow, such as a new message or another supported Telegram update.
- Execute the trigger node for a test.
- In Telegram, open the bot chat and send
/startor another short message. - Return to n8n and inspect the execution data.
The captured update normally contains the message information and the chat object. Record the chat identifier from this data; it is the most reliable value to use when sending a direct reply or targeting a group.

Use the trigger output as your first chat-ID check
Do not guess a destination identifier when a trigger execution can provide it. Send a test message from the exact chat you intend to automate, inspect the resulting update, and map the relevant chat-ID field into the downstream node. This approach also confirms that the bot can actually see messages in that chat.

- Add a Telegram node after the Telegram Trigger.
- Select the same Telegram credential.
- Choose the Message resource.
- Choose Send Message.
- Enter the destination in the Chat ID field, or map the ID from the trigger output.
- Enter the reply or notification text.
- Execute the node and confirm that the message arrives in Telegram.
For a direct reply, map the chat ID from the incoming update instead of hard-coding it. That allows one workflow to answer different users. For a fixed alert destination, a stored chat ID is appropriate, provided you have verified that it belongs to the intended chat.

Finding a private group ID
n8n’s common-issues guidance identifies three practical methods:
- Send a message in the group and read the chat ID in a Telegram Trigger execution.
- Use the Telegram browser URL when the group is open in Telegram Web.
- Use @RawDataBot to inspect Telegram update data.
When you enter a private group ID in n8n, include the leading -. Omitting that sign can cause a valid group to be treated as a different destination.
Why a public username is not universal
The @channelusername form is for a public channel. It does not replace the numeric identifier required by private groups and private channels. If a send operation fails despite a correctly spelled public username, verify that the channel is public and that the bot has been added with sufficient rights.

Post to a Telegram channel
- Open the target channel in Telegram.
- Add the bot as a channel administrator.
- Grant the permissions required for posting or for the specific message operation you plan to run.
- In n8n, use a Telegram node with the Message resource and the relevant operation.
- Use
@channelusernamefor a public channel, or the appropriate numeric identifier for a private destination. - Run a small test post before activating the workflow.
Most Telegram message operations require the bot to be present in the channel. A valid token and a valid channel username do not compensate for missing membership or administrator access.
Test before activating the workflow
- Leave the workflow in manual execution while configuring it.
- Execute the Telegram Trigger node.
- Send
/startor a short test message to the bot. - Confirm that the trigger receives an update and that the chat ID is visible in the data.
- Execute the downstream Send Message node with that captured ID.
- Verify the reply in Telegram.
- If the workflow targets a group or channel, repeat the test from that exact destination.
- Test any media, callback, or approval events that the production workflow will handle.
- Activate the workflow only after the manual execution succeeds.
Testing each destination separately catches permission and identifier errors before they become silent production failures.
Webhook requirements for self-hosted n8n
Use a public HTTPS endpoint
Telegram’s Bot API requires HTTPS requests. A self-hosted n8n instance using Telegram Trigger therefore needs a stable, publicly reachable HTTPS URL that Telegram can contact. A local address, an HTTP-only address, or an endpoint hidden behind an inaccessible firewall will not receive webhook updates.
Confirm that the external URL resolves to the n8n webhook endpoint, that the TLS certificate is valid, and that inbound requests can reach the n8n process. Inspect the webhook status when diagnosing delivery problems.

Telegram provides two mutually exclusive ways to receive bot updates: getUpdates long polling and outgoing webhooks. Long polling does not work while an outgoing webhook is configured. Consequently, another workflow, service, or test script must not compete with n8n for the same bot’s updates.

If a bot was previously connected to a polling consumer, remove that competing consumer or otherwise switch the bot cleanly to webhook delivery before testing the n8n trigger. Likewise, do not configure multiple webhook consumers for one bot and expect each to receive every update.
Webhook security
Telegram’s setWebhook method supports an optional secret_token header. If you manage webhook configuration outside n8n, use that facility with a secret value and verify the header at the receiving endpoint. Keep the secret separate from the bot token.
Message size and throughput limits
Text length
n8n documents a 4096-character limit for Send Message text after entity parsing. Formatting entities can therefore affect the final size. For generated or user-supplied content, measure the text that will actually be sent and split it into multiple messages before submitting it.
Sending rate
n8n documents Telegram’s sending limit as 30 messages per second. Bulk notifications should be throttled rather than emitted in an unrestricted loop. Add batching, delays, retry handling, and logging so a temporary API error does not lose the entire delivery run.
Practical message design
- Split long output at paragraph or sentence boundaries where possible.
- Preserve context by adding a part number when a response spans several messages.
- Throttle bursts of notifications instead of sending all items simultaneously.
- Record failed sends and the destination ID so they can be retried safely.
- Keep formatting predictable when entity parsing is enabled.
Common failures and fixes
The Telegram Trigger receives no event
- Confirm that the workflow is being executed manually or is active.
- Check that the selected credential contains the current token.
- Send the message to the correct bot account, not to BotFather or another similarly named account.
- Verify that the user has initiated the bot chat by sending a message.
- For self-hosted n8n, verify that the public URL is HTTPS and reachable.
- Check whether another polling process or webhook is consuming the bot’s updates.
The token is invalid or has been exposed
Regenerate or revoke the token with BotFather, update the n8n Telegram credential, save it, and rerun the manual trigger test. Do not continue using a token that appeared in a public log, screenshot, repository, or message.

The message goes to the wrong destination
Capture the chat ID from a trigger execution made in the intended chat. Use @channelusername only for a public channel. Use the signed numeric ID, including its leading minus sign, for a private group. Review mapped fields if an expression is selecting an earlier execution’s chat data.
A channel send fails
Add the bot to the channel as an administrator and grant the permissions required by the operation. Then verify that the destination identifier matches the channel’s public username or private numeric ID.

A self-hosted trigger never receives updates
- Check that the n8n external URL is publicly reachable over HTTPS.
- Inspect webhook status and server logs for rejected requests.
- Confirm that no
getUpdatesconsumer is active for the same bot. - Check that another webhook has not been configured for that bot.
- After correcting the conflict, run a fresh manual trigger test.
Updates are duplicated or missing
Look for another workflow, script, or service connected to the same bot. Telegram permits only one update-delivery mode at a time, so a competing webhook or polling connection can prevent n8n from receiving the expected stream.

Production checklist

- Run a manual trigger test with

- For self-hosted n8n, expose a stable HTTPS endpoint and avoid competing polling or webhook consumers.
- Keep outgoing text within 4096 characters after entity parsing.
- Throttle bulk sends to stay within the documented 30-messages-per-second limit.
- Log failed deliveries and test the recovery path before activation.
Final setup sequence
The shortest reliable path is to create the bot in @BotFather, place its token in one n8n Telegram credential, and test a Telegram Trigger with a message sent directly to the bot. Use the trigger output to obtain the chat ID, connect a Message → Send Message node, and verify the reply manually. Add group or channel permissions only when those destinations are required. If n8n is self-hosted, solve the HTTPS webhook and update-delivery choice before troubleshooting node settings; otherwise Telegram cannot deliver the trigger event regardless of the workflow logic.
