How to Set Up Viewer-Controlled Cursors for a Livestream

By VGSources Team 12 min read

A viewer-controlled cursor is not a single overlay you install. It is a two-part system: a cursor must be rendered inside the video that viewers see, and a separate input path must receive viewer actions, decide which actions are allowed, and send a safe cursor position to that overlay. OBS and Twitch can handle the display side, but the reviewed official documentation does not establish a ready-made shared-cursor product for the input side.

The reliable design is a bounded pointer over a defined game or desktop region, controlled through a browser page or platform extension and protected by rate limits, turn-taking, moderation controls, and a private bridge to the streaming computer. Do not give chat unrestricted access to the streamer’s mouse, keyboard, OBS, or operating system.

What a viewer-controlled cursor actually requires

“Let chat move the cursor” sounds like one feature, but a working implementation has four separate jobs:

  1. Collect input: a viewer-facing page or extension receives pointer movements, clicks, votes, or commands.
  2. Choose who is allowed to act: the system identifies the active participant, queues viewers, or combines many inputs into one approved position.
  3. Apply safety rules: the system limits the movement region, message rate, session length, and actions that can be taken.
  4. Render the result: an overlay draws the approved cursor in the outgoing stream.

An OBS browser source can display a cursor graphic, but it cannot, by itself, authenticate viewers or decide which viewer controls it. Conversely, a chat bot or extension can collect commands without placing a visible pointer in the broadcast. Plan the input and rendering layers separately.

Choose the interaction model before building anything

The best design depends on whether the audience needs continuous control or only occasional influence. Continuous movement creates the greatest latency, moderation, and synchronization problems. A bounded, deliberate interaction is usually easier to operate on a live channel.

Model How it works Best use Main trade-off
One active controller One viewer receives control for a timed turn. Other viewers see the same cursor but cannot move it until the turn ends. Puzzles, demonstrations, and precise pointing. Requires a queue, visible ownership, and a handoff mechanism.
Queue or turn-taking Viewers request a turn; the server grants access in order and expires inactive turns. Small groups or cooperative challenges. Waiting viewers may lose interest if turns are too long.
Vote-to-move Many viewers submit directions or target points; the server combines them at fixed intervals. Large audiences where no single viewer should dominate. The resulting cursor is less precise and can feel slow.
Discrete commands Chat sends commands such as left, right, select, or point-at-option. The overlay moves in steps. High-latency streams and accessibility-focused interactions. It is not the same as a free-moving mouse pointer.

For a first version, use one cursor inside one clearly marked rectangle. Keep the pointer’s target separate from the real operating-system pointer. The audience should be able to point at a game element or on-screen object without gaining control of the streamer’s computer.

Define the controlled area and the safety boundary

Keep the target bounded

Decide whether the cursor will move over the game viewport, a puzzle panel, a browser demonstration, or another fixed rectangle. Record that rectangle’s width and height in the coordinate system used by the input service. Do not accept arbitrary screen coordinates, and do not let an incoming event select OBS controls, desktop applications, system menus, or password fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Separate the stream cursor from the host cursor

The safest arrangement is a visual pointer rendered by HTML or canvas in the overlay. It is not a synthetic mouse event sent to Windows, macOS, or a game. If your experience genuinely needs to affect an application, add a narrowly scoped local bridge that accepts only approved actions for the named application and region. A viewer-facing endpoint should never expose a general mouse or keyboard API.

Decide what happens when nobody is active

Choose one state in advance: hide the cursor, show it in a neutral position, or display a “waiting for controller” indicator. Make the state visible to viewers so they do not mistake a paused cursor for a broken connection.

Build the viewer input surface

The official sources reviewed for OBS, Twitch, and adjacent interaction tools do not provide a shared-cursor web application or a complete backend. If you build one, treat the following as implementation requirements rather than features supplied by those services.

Viewer page or platform extension

A browser page is the simplest control surface: it can display the current owner, a queue button, a pause state, and the allowed movement rectangle. A Twitch video-overlay extension can also place controls in the viewer’s player space, but it must coexist with the player’s own controls and layouts. Build the control panel so that it does not cover the video’s seek, volume, full-screen, or theater controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Identity and active ownership

Each pointer event needs an identified participant. The server should reject events from viewers who are not currently active, whose turn has expired, or whose session has been revoked by a moderator. Show the active username or an anonymized queue position in the control surface, depending on the privacy expectations of your channel.

Movement limits

Clamp every accepted point to the rectangle before broadcasting it. A typical event should carry normalized coordinates, such as values from 0 to 1, rather than raw screen pixels. The overlay then maps those values to its own width and height. Normalized coordinates prevent a browser window size from changing the target area unexpectedly.

Rate limits and smoothing

Do not forward every raw pointer event. A browser can generate more events than a stream needs, and a crowd can deliberately flood the endpoint. Sample or coalesce movement at a controlled interval, reject bursts over the per-viewer limit, and interpolate between approved positions in the overlay. Smoothing should improve appearance only; it must never allow a cursor to leave the approved bounds.

Queue, timeout, and moderator reset

Provide a short inactivity timeout, a manual “pause cursor” control, and a reset-to-center action. The moderator must be able to revoke the active viewer without touching OBS. Keep an audit record of ownership changes and rejected events so that abuse can be diagnosed after a stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Render the cursor in OBS

OBS is the outgoing-video layer. The general workflow is to host the cursor overlay at a stable URL, add that URL as a Browser Source, and size the source to the same region in which the pointer is allowed to move.

  1. Prepare the overlay page. Render a transparent page containing the cursor, optional target outline, connection state, and any ownership label you want viewers to see. The page should subscribe to the approved position stream, not directly to untrusted viewer events.
  2. Add a Browser Source. In OBS, use the Sources panel’s add control and choose Browser. Paste the overlay URL into the source’s URL field.
  3. Match the dimensions. Set the Browser Source width and height to the intended overlay area. Crowd Control’s published setup guide illustrates this general overlay workflow: copy an overlay URL into a Browser Source and match the overlay resolution and size to the gameplay area. That documentation is useful as a display example; it does not document a shared cursor.
  4. Position the source. Place the Browser Source above the game or desktop capture in the scene stack. Align its top-left corner and dimensions with the controlled rectangle. If the game capture changes aspect ratio, the pointer will drift unless the overlay and capture are resized together.
  5. Test transparency and scaling. Confirm that the page background is transparent, the pointer remains visible against bright and dark scenes, and browser zoom is 100 percent. Avoid CSS scaling that changes the relationship between the overlay’s coordinate system and the game area.
  6. Repeat for every scene that needs the cursor. A Browser Source can be copied into other scenes, but verify its position after each scene transition. A scene with a different game layout needs a different bounds configuration or a deliberate disabled state.

The overlay should show connection and pause states without obscuring important game information. Keep the pointer small enough not to cover text, but large enough to survive video compression and mobile viewing.

Using a Twitch extension as the control surface

Twitch extensions can supply viewer-facing controls in the video-overlay area. They are useful when you want the interaction to stay inside the player, but they are not a documented cursor-synchronization backend. You still need a service that authenticates participants, validates positions, and publishes the approved state to the OBS overlay.

Overlay elements can cover valuable video area or conflict with player controls. Keep buttons and status labels away from the player’s control layer, and test at least normal, theater, and full-screen layouts. If a control is essential, provide a compact collapsed state or a separate panel rather than permanently occupying the center of the video.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep OBS and the host computer private

OBS WebSocket can automate scenes and sources, making it tempting to connect viewer input directly to OBS. That is an unnecessary privilege for a cursor overlay and creates a serious security boundary. OBS’s remote-control guidance says: “It is highly recommended to keep the WebSocket protected with a password against unauthorized control.”

Never publish OBS WebSocket credentials in a browser page, extension code, chat command, or client-side JavaScript. If the custom system must affect OBS, run a trusted local bridge that holds the WebSocket credentials and exposes only narrowly scoped actions, such as enabling or disabling one known Browser Source. The viewer-facing server should receive pointer input only; it should not accept arbitrary scene names, source identifiers, scripts, keyboard events, or shell commands.

  • Use a password-protected OBS WebSocket connection.
  • Keep the bridge on the streamer’s machine or a private network.
  • Allow-list the specific scene and source actions the bridge can perform.
  • Revoke sessions and rotate credentials if the control service is exposed accidentally.
  • Log moderator actions and rejected requests without recording unnecessary personal data.

Design for stream latency

Viewer-controlled movement is particularly sensitive to delay. YouTube describes low latency as suitable for limited interaction and says that most viewers of a low-latency stream will experience latency of less than 10 seconds. That is acceptable for a deliberate pointing task but can feel unusable for continuous steering.

  • Use turn-taking and a visible countdown instead of asking a viewer to chase a moving target.
  • Prefer “point at option A, B, or C” over unrestricted free movement when the stream has noticeable delay.
  • Show the last accepted position and ownership state so viewers understand that their input was received even before the video catches up.
  • Use short commands or fixed movement steps when a continuous pointer would cause oscillation.
  • Measure from input submission to visible movement in the broadcast, not merely from browser event to server response.

Latency also comes from encoding, platform distribution, the viewer’s connection, and the time needed to moderate a crowded queue. A fast backend cannot remove all of those delays.

Private-stream test plan

Use a private or unlisted stream before exposing the feature to a public audience. Test with more than one viewer account and include the failure cases, not just the ideal path.

  1. Coordinate check: move to each corner of the allowed rectangle and confirm that the cursor stops at the boundary rather than crossing into the rest of the scene.
  2. Ownership check: verify that a non-active viewer’s events are ignored and that the active viewer is clearly identified.
  3. Timeout check: stop sending input and confirm that the turn expires, the cursor pauses or resets, and the next viewer can be admitted.
  4. Flood check: send rapid events from one account and confirm that rate limiting keeps the overlay responsive.
  5. Moderator check: pause, revoke, reset, and resume without exposing OBS controls to the audience.
  6. Scene check: switch scenes, resize the game capture, and return to the original scene. Confirm that the Browser Source remains aligned or enters a safe disabled state.
  7. Disconnect check: stop the input service, close the overlay connection, and restart each component. The cursor should not jump to an unsafe coordinate during recovery.
  8. Layout check: inspect normal, theater, and full-screen Twitch layouts if a Twitch extension is used. Ensure controls do not cover player chrome.
  9. Compression check: view the stream on a phone-sized player and confirm that the pointer remains visible without hiding important game text.

Common failure modes and fixes

The cursor appears in OBS but viewers cannot move it

The Browser Source is only the rendering layer. Check that the viewer page is connected to the input service, that a participant has an active turn, and that approved positions—not raw browser events—are being published to the overlay.

The cursor is offset from the game object

Compare the Browser Source’s actual pixel dimensions and position with the game capture’s rectangle. Remove unintended browser zoom or CSS scaling, then verify the normalized-coordinate mapping. Recheck after changing the game’s aspect ratio or OBS canvas.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The pointer leaves the intended region

Clamp coordinates on the server and again in the overlay. Do not rely on a client-side JavaScript check, because a viewer can bypass it. Add a visible boundary during testing so a moderator can see violations immediately.

Chat makes the cursor unusable

Switch from continuous control to a queue, vote aggregation, or discrete commands. Lower the accepted event rate, add a per-user cooldown, and provide a moderator pause. A single active controller is often more usable than trying to average hundreds of raw positions.

The extension covers player controls

Move controls away from the player chrome, collapse nonessential status, and test normal, theater, and full-screen layouts. If the interaction cannot fit safely in the video-overlay area, use a separate browser page for controls.

A scene change breaks alignment

Give each scene an explicit overlay rectangle, or disable the cursor while the scene has no compatible target. Do not assume that a Browser Source copied between scenes has the same visual geometry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Someone can control OBS

Immediately stop the viewer-facing service, rotate exposed credentials, and inspect the local bridge. Restore only a password-protected OBS WebSocket connection with allow-listed actions. Pointer input should never be translated into arbitrary OBS commands.

A practical decision framework

Choose the simplest architecture that satisfies the interaction rather than starting with unrestricted mouse control.

  • Need only a visible pointer? Build a browser-based input page and a transparent OBS Browser Source. Keep the pointer entirely virtual.
  • Need many viewers to influence one position? Aggregate votes or directional commands at fixed intervals, then publish one approved cursor state.
  • Need precise individual control? Use a queue with one active participant, a short timeout, and an obvious handoff indicator.
  • Need controls inside Twitch? Use a Twitch extension for the interface, but keep validation and state synchronization in a separate backend.
  • Need to affect a game or application? Treat any local automation bridge as privileged software. Allow only named actions in a bounded region, and keep OBS administration separate.
  • Expect more than a few seconds of delay? Replace continuous steering with turn-taking, target selection, or discrete commands.

Recommended minimum feature set

A first public version should not launch until it has these controls:

  • A clearly defined movement rectangle.
  • One active viewer or a documented aggregation rule.
  • Server-side coordinate clamping.
  • Per-user and global rate limits.
  • Turn timeout and queue removal.
  • Moderator pause, revoke, and reset controls.
  • A safe state when the input service or overlay disconnects.
  • Private, password-protected OBS control if any bridge is used.
  • Alignment checks for every scene containing the cursor.
  • A latency-tolerant interaction design appropriate to the platform’s actual delay.

The central distinction is simple: an overlay makes a cursor visible; an input service makes it controllable. Keeping those responsibilities separate lets you moderate the audience interaction without handing viewers the keys to OBS or the streaming computer.
