How to Set Up Your First Stream in OBS Studio (Updated for 2026)

A beginner-friendly, current guide to setting up OBS Studio: use the wizard, connect a streaming service, build a scene, add video and audio sources, test privately, and troubleshoot common issues.

The reliable first-time OBS workflow is: run the Auto-Configuration Wizard, connect your streaming service, create a scene, add your game or screen and audio sources, check the preview and meters, run a private test, then start your public stream.

This updates the older 2023 workflow for current OBS Studio releases. Menu labels and platform requirements can vary by operating system, OBS version, connected service, and account status, so treat the wizard and a real test as your starting point—not a guarantee of perfect settings.

What you need before opening OBS

  • A compatible Windows, macOS, or Linux computer
  • A streaming account on Twitch, YouTube, or another supported service
  • A stable upload connection
  • A microphone, including a headset microphone
  • An optional webcam or capture card
  • A game, application, presentation, or desktop to capture

OBS Studio is free. Meeting its baseline system requirements does not guarantee that a particular computer can stream successfully, because the result also depends on the game, resolution, frame rate, encoder, scene complexity, and network stability. See the official system requirements.

1. Download and install OBS Studio

Download OBS Studio from the official OBS website, not an unrelated download portal. OBS provides installation guidance for Windows, macOS, and Linux in its Knowledge Base.

Do not install plugins, alert packages, bots, or elaborate overlays yet. First complete a plain stream with one scene, one video source, a microphone, and desktop audio. Extra browser sources and plugins can add performance and troubleshooting problems.

2. Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard

  1. Open OBS Studio.
  2. If the setup wizard appears, choose the option for streaming, not recording-only.
  3. Select or connect your intended streaming service when prompted.
  4. Allow OBS to test your hardware and network and propose settings.
  5. Accept the result as a baseline.

If you skipped the wizard, reopen it through Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS recommends this process because it considers your intended activity, hardware, and network conditions. The official Quick Start Guide explains the wizard and first-stream workflow.

Test with the game or application open, the intended camera active, your microphone connected, and your normal background applications running. A setting that works on an idle desktop may fail once a demanding game is using the CPU or GPU.

3. Connect OBS to your streaming platform

  1. Open Settings in OBS.
  2. Select Stream.
  3. Choose your service.
  4. Use account connection if OBS offers it, or paste a stream key supplied by the platform.
  5. Choose a server option if one is exposed.
  6. Click Apply or OK.

The Settings → Stream section contains service, server, and stream-key controls. See OBS’s Studio Overview for the general layout.

Connecting OBS does not automatically settle your platform settings. In the platform dashboard, verify the stream title, category, audience, privacy, scheduled status, and visibility. Some services require live-streaming activation, verification, eligibility checks, or a scheduled broadcast.

  • Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring

Protect your stream key. Never show it in a screenshot, recording, tutorial, desktop capture, or chat message. If it is exposed, regenerate it through the streaming service. A stream key can also be changed or invalidated by the platform.

4. Understand scenes and sources

OBS is built around four core areas:

  • Scenes: complete layouts or production states, such as Gameplay, Starting Soon, BRB, and Ending.
  • Sources: the individual game, window, monitor, webcam, image, text, browser, or capture-card inputs inside a scene.
  • Audio Mixer: live audio channels and their volume meters.
  • Controls: commands such as starting or stopping streaming and recording.

For a first stream, create one scene called Gameplay, Main, or Presentation. You can add more scenes after the basic stream works.

5. Create your first scene

  1. In the Scenes dock, click +.
  2. Give the scene a clear name and confirm.
  3. In the Sources dock, click +.
  4. Add your main video source.
  5. Resize and position it in the preview.
  6. Add a webcam, text, or image source if needed.

Sources are layered. A source higher in the list can cover sources below it. If your webcam disappears behind a game, move the webcam higher in the Sources list. A full-screen image, browser source, or black rectangle can similarly hide everything beneath it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the right capture source

What you want to show Start with Main trade-off
An entire monitor Display Capture Notifications, private windows, and passwords can appear.
One application Window Capture Some games and protected windows may appear black.
A supported Windows game Game Capture Permissions, anti-cheat systems, fullscreen modes, and GPU selection can affect it.
A console or second computer Video Capture Device through a capture card Requires compatible hardware and correct signal and audio routing.
A Mac desktop or application macOS Screen Capture macOS permissions and available options differ from Windows.
A webcam Video Capture Device Resolution, frame rate, USB bandwidth, and camera permissions matter.

Use Display Capture for tutorials or presentations when you need several applications. Use Window Capture when privacy matters and you need only one program. On Windows, Game Capture is intended for supported 3D games and can be more efficient, but it is not universally compatible. OBS lists these source types in its Quick Start Guide.

Privacy check: before using Display Capture, disable desktop notifications and close private messages, email, password managers, personal files, and unrelated browser tabs.

6. Add and check your microphone

In a typical OBS installation, desktop audio and microphone capture may already be configured. Do not assume they are correct: check the selected devices and meters manually.

  1. Speak into the microphone.
  2. Confirm the microphone meter moves in the Audio Mixer.
  3. Make sure the channel is not muted.
  4. If it is missing or wrong, open Settings → Audio and select the intended input device.
  5. Check your operating system’s microphone permission.

You can also add an Audio Input Capture source to a scene. Avoid capturing the same microphone globally and as a scene source, because duplicate paths can create echo.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Add and check desktop or game audio

  1. Play sound from the game or application.
  2. Confirm the desktop-audio meter moves.
  3. Check that OBS is listening to the output device actually being used by the operating system.
  4. Listen to a local recording to verify that game audio is present and not overpowering speech.

Desktop audio can be silent when the game is routed to a headset while OBS is monitoring another output. Browser alerts and notification sounds may also enter the stream unintentionally.

For detailed routing, meters, filters, and monitoring controls, use OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide.

Prevent echo

  • Keep one microphone capture path.
  • Disable unnecessary audio monitoring.
  • Use headphones while testing instead of speakers.
  • Check the recording itself, not only the moving meters.

A moving meter proves that audio is entering OBS; it does not prove that the correct device is selected, speech is intelligible, game audio is balanced, or the stream is free of echo or clipping.

8. Understand output and video settings

Open Settings → Output and Settings → Video only after the basic scene works. The important concepts are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Base (Canvas) Resolution: the size of your working layout in OBS.
  • Output (Scaled) Resolution: the resolution sent to the streaming service.
  • Common FPS Values: commonly 30 or 60, depending on your content and system.
  • Bitrate: the amount of data used by the stream.
  • Encoder: the CPU or supported hardware component that compresses the video.

OBS provides Simple and Advanced output modes. Simple mode is easier for beginners; Advanced mode exposes more independent stream and recording controls. OBS explains the distinction in its Studio Overview.

A sensible starting approach

  • Begin with the wizard’s settings rather than copying a universal preset.
  • Use 30 FPS if your computer is limited or your content is mostly talking, slides, or static video.
  • Use 60 FPS when motion clarity matters and your computer and upload connection can sustain it.
  • Do not increase resolution or bitrate simply because your hardware can handle it; platform limits and viewers’ connections also matter.
  • Change one setting at a time and test again.

A hardware encoder can reduce CPU load, while a software encoder uses the CPU and may reduce game performance. The best choice depends on your processor, graphics hardware, drivers, workload, and available encoder options. Avoid assuming that NVENC, AMF, QuickSync, or x264 is automatically best for every computer.

9. Test privately before going live

Run a local recording first, then use a private or unlisted platform test where available. OBS recommends testing before your first public stream.

  1. Click Start Recording.
  2. Play the game or present the application normally.
  3. Speak into the microphone and switch scenes.
  4. Stop the recording.
  5. Watch the entire file.

Check for a visible video preview, correct webcam framing, clear speech, game or desktop audio, echo, clipping, audio delay, and unexpected private information. Then run a short stream test using the same scene, camera, microphone, and workload you will use publicly.

In OBS, watch for the stream timer, persistent dropped frames, an encoding overloaded warning, and a computer that becomes unresponsive. Also check the streaming platform’s own stream-health indicators.

10. Start and stop your first public stream

  1. Set the title, category, audience, and privacy or visibility on the platform.
  2. Open the intended scene in OBS.
  3. Confirm that the microphone is unmuted and the correct source is visible.
  4. Click Start Streaming.
  5. Wait for the platform dashboard to confirm the live connection.
  6. Monitor the audio meters and stream health.
  7. When finished, click Stop Streaming and confirm that the platform has ended the broadcast.

Keep Start Recording separate from Start Streaming. A local recording is useful for checking quality, but it does not make a broadcast live.

Common OBS problems and fixes

Symptom First checks Fallback
Black game capture Check the capture method, OBS and game permissions, fullscreen mode, and whether both use the same GPU. Try Window Capture, borderless-windowed mode, or Display Capture; recreate the source.
No microphone audio Check the mixer mute button, Settings → Audio, operating-system permissions, and duplicate sources. Reconnect or recreate the input source, restart OBS, and make a local recording.
No desktop audio Check OBS’s output device, the operating system’s volume mixer, and the application’s audio routing. Select the device manually and avoid capturing the same audio through multiple paths.
Echo Look for duplicate microphone sources and incorrect monitoring. Use headphones, disable unnecessary monitoring, and keep one capture path.
Encoding overload Check resolution, frame rate, encoder, game GPU load, browser sources, and filters. Lower output resolution, reduce 60 FPS to 30, use an appropriate hardware encoder, or reduce game settings.
Dropped frames or disconnects Check upload stability, Wi-Fi congestion, other uploads, bitrate, and the selected server. Use wired Ethernet, stop cloud backups, lower bitrate or resolution, and try another available server.
Webcam unavailable Close video-call applications, check camera permissions, reconnect the camera, and confirm the selected device. Recreate the Video Capture Device source or lower its resolution and frame rate.

For additional official troubleshooting resources, use the OBS Help Portal and its stream connection troubleshooting resources.

Optional upgrades after your first successful stream

Once the basic workflow is reliable, consider adding:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Starting Soon, BRB, and Ending scenes
  • Alerts, chat boxes, and browser sources
  • Text, images, transitions, and hotkeys
  • A capture card for a console or second computer
  • A better microphone or webcam if your existing equipment is the weak point
  • Separate audio tracks, local recording, or replay features

These are optional. A headset microphone, existing webcam, and OBS are enough to complete a first stream. Hardware cannot correct an incorrect audio route, duplicate source, or exposed private window.

First-stream checklist

  • Correct platform account connected
  • Stream key protected
  • Title, category, audience, and visibility confirmed
  • Correct scene selected
  • Game, window, display, camera, or capture-card source visible
  • Microphone meter moving
  • Desktop-audio meter moving
  • No private information visible
  • Local recording reviewed
  • Stream health confirmed after going live
