What does “questionable” mean for your lineup?
“Questionable” is an injury designation, not a fantasy recommendation or a reliable measure of whether a player will suit up. A status can change during the week, so use a current team or league injury report and confirm the official inactive list close to kickoff. NFL.com’s 2026 Week 1 injury tracker is an example of a game-by-game list; its Week 1 designations are not current status information for later weeks.
Even if a player is cleared to play, availability does not establish that they will have their usual workload. Look for credible updates about role, snaps, or workload limits, then compare that expected opportunity with what your replacement is likely to get.
Set a deadline before you decide
Your practical deadline is the first applicable lock—not necessarily the questionable player’s kickoff. If your only suitable replacement plays earlier, that replacement may lock before you know whether the questionable player will be active.

NFL.com’s Official Fantasy Rules 2025 say: “An owner may change the status of the players on his/her team (i.e., ‘active’ or ‘reserve’) before a player’s NFL team is scheduled to start as determined by NFL.com’s clock.” That rule describes NFL.com Fantasy; other platforms and league settings can differ. Check your league’s roster-lock rules rather than assuming the NFL.com deadline applies.
A practical start-or-sit workflow
- Check the latest status and when it was posted. Use a current team or league injury report, then look for official inactive information near kickoff. A designation from an earlier update may no longer reflect the player’s status.
- Identify your actual deadline. Check when both the questionable player and each possible replacement lock. If a replacement starts earlier, decide whether to use that option before their game begins.
- Choose an eligible backup. Confirm the player is on your roster, available, and eligible for the specific lineup slot. Compare their likely opportunity with the questionable player’s likely role, including any credible workload limitation.
- Compare the football and lineup context. Consider scoring format, matchup, expected playing time, and whether your roster needs a safer floor or the potential upside of the questionable player. Start/sit consensus and matchup ratings can help compare options, but they do not replace current status information or your league’s lock rules.
- Preserve flexibility where your rules allow it. If a later-playing player is uncertain, placing them in a flexible slot may keep more eligible substitutions available. This depends on your platform, slot eligibility, and lineup settings, so confirm the rules before relying on that approach.
- Check inactives close to kickoff—without waiting past a lock. NFL Fantasy support says NFL teams designate inactive players about 90 minutes before scheduled kickoff. Treat that as an approximate final-news checkpoint, not as a promise that your replacement will remain unlocked until then.
How to use Auto-Swap on NFL Fantasy
NFL Fantasy describes Auto-Swap as replacing a player projected for zero points with the first-ranked player on the manager’s backup list. NFL Support says, “It never touches anyone else on your roster.” The feature is not described as covering every player who is active but limited, so do not rely on it to make all questionable-player decisions for you. Check that it is enabled and understand how your league configures it.

What to compare when the player is active or still uncertain
Compare the actual choices available to you, rather than treating a single label or projection as decisive.
- Availability and recency: How current is the status report, and is there an official inactive announcement?
- Expected role: Is there credible information about playing time, snaps, or a workload limit?
- Opportunity and matchup: What role and likely opportunities does each player have in this particular game?
- Scoring and roster need: How does your league score the relevant position, and does your matchup call for a steadier floor or more upside?
- Lock and eligibility: Can the alternative enter that exact slot, and will they remain unlocked long enough for you to make the change?
For additional context, FantasyPros explains that its expert-preference percentage reflects the share of experts preferring one player over other appropriate starters, while its matchup rating describes how a position performs against an opponent relative to average. These are comparison aids, not guarantees of a player’s availability or workload.

Should you start a questionable player?
Only if, after checking the latest status and your lineup deadline, the player’s expected role and upside compare favorably with an eligible replacement. If you cannot wait for the final status without risking an earlier replacement lock, make the decision before that earlier lock. Without the player, week, platform, scoring format, and available alternatives, there is no sound player-specific recommendation.
