That identifies the current roster order, but it does not establish who will play more: Pittsburgh can use different tight ends in different personnel packages.
Who is the Steelers’ starting tight end?
The Steelers’ official depth chart places Freiermuth and Washington together in the first tight-end column, with Tonyan next. Ourlads lists them in sequence—Freiermuth, Washington, Tonyan—in its chart marked updated October 2, 2026. These are two sources presenting the order differently, so the team chart is the best reference for the current official listing.
A chart is not a snap-count forecast. In an August 5, 2025 explanation, Steelers.com noted that multiple tight ends may be listed as starters because personnel packages vary, and that which player enters can depend more on the package than the chart order. That explanation predates the current chart, so it is useful context rather than confirmation of the exact 2026 convention.
How Freiermuth, Washington and Tonyan compare
| Player | Chart listing | Listed size | Documented receiving production | What the available information establishes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pat Freiermuth | First column with Washington on the Steelers chart; first in Ourlads’ sequence | 6-foot-5, 258 pounds | NFL.com lists 41 receptions for 486 yards in 2025, and 11 for 108 in its 2026 snapshot | Receiving production is documented; chart position and size do not specify his weekly package or snap share. |
| Darnell Washington | First column with Freiermuth on the Steelers chart; second in Ourlads’ sequence | 6-foot-7, 264 pounds | NFL.com lists 31 receptions for 364 yards in 2025, and 6 for 92 in its 2026 snapshot | His size and Pittsburgh’s use of tight-end-heavy formations support a physicality and blocking angle, not an exclusive blocking assignment. |
| Robert Tonyan | Next on the Steelers chart and third in Ourlads’ sequence | 6-foot-5, 240 pounds | The Steelers’ live statistics page snapshot lists 1 reception for 2 yards | His chart position is known; the available sources do not establish a target share, snap share or specific weekly assignment. |
Listed measurements come from the Steelers’ active roster. The NFL.com season figures are published statistics, not projections. The team’s live statistics page currently shows Freiermuth at 14 catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns, and Washington at 9 for 119 and one touchdown; those figures differ from NFL.com’s 2026 player-page snapshots. Treat them as source-specific live snapshots, not reconciled final totals.

What the chart and role evidence say about blocking
Washington’s listed size and Pittsburgh’s tight-end-heavy formations point to a credible blocking and physicality role. NFL.com described the 2025 formations as adding size and blocking force. That is evidence about the broader formation approach, not proof that Washington blocks on every snap or that he lacks a receiving role.
The available information does not assign exact blocking duties to any of the three tight ends or provide blocking grades, snap counts, or a reliable weekly package breakdown. It is more accurate to describe likely role signals than to label one player “the blocker” and another “the receiver.”

Receiving opportunities: production, not target forecasts
Freiermuth has recorded receiving production in both the 2025 season totals and the displayed 2026 snapshots. Washington also has substantial documented receiving production: NFL.com lists 31 catches for 364 yards in 2025 and 6 for 92 in its 2026 snapshot. Those numbers show that both can contribute as receivers; they do not establish future targets or a fixed pecking order.
The Steelers’ statistics page is live and currently reports different 2026 totals from NFL.com for Freiermuth and Washington. Because the pages do not match, attribute any in-season figure to its source rather than combining them or presenting one as a settled final total. No cited source establishes a quantified target share for Tonyan or a receiving projection for any player.

How to read the depth chart without overreading it
- For the official listing: use the Steelers chart, where Freiermuth and Washington share the first column and Tonyan follows.
- For a playing-time expectation: do not infer a winner from the column alone; the 2025 team explanation says personnel packages can affect who enters.
- For role descriptions: Washington’s size and the team’s formation approach suggest a blocking dimension, while the receiving figures show both Washington and Freiermuth have been involved in the passing game.
- For current statistics: name the source and regard the cited 2026 values as snapshots, since the Steelers and NFL.com pages differ.
