A new starting quarterback can change how an NFL offense reads a defense, protects the passer, and balances passing with running. The team may adjust its play calls to fit the new player, but a quarterback switch does not guarantee a better or worse result: the reason for the change, preparation time, teammates, coaching, and opponent all matter.
Why a team changes its starting quarterback
A switch can be forced by injury, prompted by performance, or made as part of a longer-term evaluation or development plan. Those situations are not interchangeable: a backup entering after an injury may have little preparation time, while a coach making a deliberate change can reshape the offense around the new starter.
Injury
When Joe Burrow suffered a season-ending wrist injury in 2023, Jake Browning took over as Cincinnati’s starter. The Bengals had to rely on a backup in the middle of the season rather than choosing a change under normal conditions.
Performance and development
A poor game does not automatically mean a coach will make a change. In September 2025, the Associated Press reported that Giants coach Brian Daboll kept Russell Wilson as the starter for Week 2 after Wilson completed 17 of 37 passes for 168 yards in a 21–6 opening loss. Daboll said, “I have confidence in Russ, and we’re doing everything we can each week to develop Jaxson,” referring to rookie Jaxson Dart. The decision reflected both confidence in the incumbent and a plan to develop the rookie, rather than a simple reading of one stat line. Associated Press, September 2025.

What can change in the offense
Quarterbacks differ in how they process a defense, how quickly they throw, what routes they favor, and whether they can escape pressure or threaten a defense as a runner. Coaches may alter the plan to suit those traits, but no team necessarily makes every possible adjustment.
Reads, timing, and play calls
A new starter can lead coaches to simplify progressions, emphasize quicker throws, or lean on concepts the quarterback knows well. NFL.com’s account of quarterback fit describes examples including simpler reads and rollouts for Baker Mayfield, alongside stronger offensive-line support and a running game. Those examples illustrate ways a team can shape a role; they do not show that any one adjustment ensures success. NFL.com, 2021.

Protection and the run game
Protection determines how much time a quarterback has to make a decision, while a capable running game can keep defenses from focusing only on the pass. Receivers also matter: a well-placed throw still depends on the target being available and making the catch. As Titans general manager Jon Robinson put it, “My opinion is that quarterback play is about leadership, decision-making and accuracy.” The same NFL.com report also discusses arm strength and the value of good players around a quarterback. How to judge the impact of a switch
Wins and passing yards alone cannot tell you whether the new starter played well or whether the change improved the team. Compare the quarterback’s contribution with the situation around him, and be careful not to draw a lasting conclusion from one game.

One optional lens is ESPN’s Total QBR. ESPN described the metric as accounting for passing, rushing, sacks, fumbles, interceptions, penalties, play situation, pressure, and the quarterback’s share of a play’s outcome. Its explanation describes a 100-point scale and situational weighting. That is ESPN’s account of its own metric, not proof that QBR is the definitive measure of quarterback performance today. ESPN Press Room, August 2, 2011.
What the record of quarterback changes can—and cannot—show
A 2026 NFL Analytics analysis examined 656 games from 2010 through 2025 in which a team started a different quarterback than in its previous game, excluding games where both teams changed starters. In that selected sample, the changing-starter teams won 36.5% of games. The author’s analysis also reported 766 changed-starter team-games overall before excluding 55 games where both sides changed for the one-sided comparison. These figures describe the author’s dataset, not an official NFL statistic or a causal estimate of what a quarterback switch does to a team’s chances. Injuries, roster quality, opponent strength, and the reason for a change can all affect the result. NFL Analytics, 2026.

Two examples of very different outcomes
Jake Browning’s relief run in Cincinnati
After taking over for injured Joe Burrow in 2023, Browning went 3–1 in his first four starts, according to the Associated Press. Against Minnesota, Cincinnati rallied from a 17–3 deficit late in the third quarter and won 27–24 in overtime. Browning completed 29 of 42 passes for 324 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Minnesota’s Nick Mullens also changed the shape of the game: he threw for 303 yards and two touchdowns, but had two interceptions. The game shows that a backup can perform well and that the opposing quarterback’s play can matter just as much; it is not evidence that backups generally match their starters. Associated Press, December 16, 2023.
The Giants kept Wilson in place for Week 2
In 2025, New York’s coaches retained Wilson after the season-opening loss rather than immediately starting Dart. Receiver Darius Slayton described the offense’s poor performance as a collective problem rather than placing responsibility solely on Wilson. The example illustrates why a quarterback’s passing line needs to be read alongside the team’s overall performance and the coach’s plan. Associated Press, September 2025.
