Java Edition: press F3 (or Fn+F3 on some laptops and Macs) to open the debug screen and read your XYZ position. If the coordinate line is missing, an operator should set /gamerule reducedDebugInfo false. Bedrock Edition: turn on Show Coordinates in the world settings, or have an operator run /gamerule showcoordinates true. Bedrock then keeps the coordinates visible in a HUD box while you play.

Java and Bedrock use different coordinate displays
The edition running on the server determines the method. Java Edition does not use the Bedrock-style coordinate HUD in the standard interface; coordinates are part of the F3 debug screen. Bedrock Edition has a dedicated HUD toggle controlled by the showcoordinates gamerule and the world’s Show Coordinates option.

| Edition | How players see coordinates | Server-side setting if they are hidden |
|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | Press F3 to open the debug screen. Some laptops and Macs require Fn+F3. |
Set reducedDebugInfo to false (the exact spelling accepted can vary by version). |
| Bedrock Edition | Enable Show Coordinates; an XYZ box remains on the HUD. | Set showcoordinates to true, or enable the option in world settings. |
You need operator or equivalent administrative permission to change a gamerule on a multiplayer server. A player can still use the relevant client-side display option when the server has not restricted it.
How to show coordinates on a Java Edition server
Open the F3 debug screen
- Join the Java Edition server and enter the world.
- Press
F3. On a laptop or Mac where the function keys control hardware features, pressFn+F3. - Look for the position entry in the debug information. It reports your X, Y and Z location, including the block-level position of your feet when the full information is available.
The debug screen is a temporary overlay. Press F3 again to close it. This is the standard vanilla Java method, so it does not require a server plugin or a client mod.

- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
What X, Y and Z mean
- X is your east-west position. Moving in one horizontal direction increases X and moving in the opposite direction decreases it.
- Y is vertical height. It changes as you climb, descend, or enter different layers of the world.
- Z is your north-south position. Its value changes as you travel along the other horizontal axis.
When a guide, map or teammate gives you a location, compare all three values. Matching only X and Z can still leave you at the wrong floor, cave level or platform.
Fix a missing coordinate line with reducedDebugInfo
Java has a gamerule named reducedDebugInfo. When it is true, the F3 screen contains fewer lines and the block-level coordinate line for the player’s feet is hidden. This remains true even when a player has selected a coordinate display preference such as In Overlay or Always.

/gamerule reducedDebugInfo false

- Run the command in chat, or enter it in the console without a leading slash if that console expects bare commands.
- Press
F3again. The coordinate line should return if the server version recognizes that gamerule spelling.
The rule affects more than coordinates. It also disables the F3+B bounding-box view and the F3+G chunk-border view. If those diagnostic shortcuts are unavailable at the same time as the position line, reducedDebugInfo is the first server setting to check.
Check the command spelling on older or customized versions
Sources and server versions show the Java rule with both reducedDebugInfo and reduced_debug_info. The names are not interchangeable on every implementation. Start typing /gamerule reduced in the game’s command prompt and use the server’s tab-completion list, or check the command help for the exact version. If the server rejects the camel-case form, try the underscore form shown by autocomplete rather than repeatedly sending an unrecognized command.
The rule was added in Java 1.8 (snapshot 14w29a). A current Java server should normally expose it, but a proxy, plugin, or unusual server implementation can alter which commands are accepted.

Why Java 1.21.9 can look different
Java 1.21.9 (snapshot 25w31a) changed the debug screen so a section-relative coordinate line can appear without reducedDebugInfo being enabled. That means two otherwise normal servers can show slightly different position information on F3. The change does not turn Java into a permanent HUD: the reliable vanilla workflow is still to open F3 and read the available position lines.
How to show coordinates on a Bedrock Edition server
Enable the world option
- Open the world’s edit or creation screen.
- Find the world settings and turn on Show Coordinates.
- Save the world, then join or rejoin it. Bedrock displays an XYZ coordinate box on the HUD.
On a multiplayer world, the host or an administrator may need to change this setting. The option is available without cheats, so enabling coordinates does not inherently require turning on the cheats setting.
Enable the gamerule from chat or the console
An operator can turn the display on while the server is running with:

- Options Personalize your character, then fight up-close and personal with melee swings, hang back with ranged attacks, or tank your way through swarms of mobs, by heavy armor
/gamerule showcoordinates true
- Confirm that you have operator permission.
- Run the command in Bedrock chat, or issue it through the server console using that console’s normal command format.
- Check the HUD. The coordinate box should appear for players in that world.
Bedrock documentation and guides write the rule as both showcoordinates and showCoordinates. Gamerule names are generally treated without regard to letter case, but the exact behavior was not established for every server build. Use tab completion or the command help supplied by your version if the lowercase form is rejected.
Let an individual player turn it on
Bedrock also exposes Show Coordinates in the player’s in-game settings. If the world has not disabled the feature, open the pause menu, enter settings, locate the gameplay options, and enable Show Coordinates. Menu groupings can vary between Bedrock releases and platforms, so use the settings search field when one is available.
This local setting is useful when one player wants coordinates but the host does not want to edit a saved world. On a managed server, an administrator’s world setting or gamerule can take precedence, so a player may need the admin to enable it.

What to check when coordinates still do not appear
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when you press F3 in Java | Your keyboard requires the function modifier, or the key is intercepted by the operating system or laptop utility. | Try Fn+F3, then test the function-key lock or keyboard settings. Verify that you are playing Java Edition rather than Bedrock. |
| Java F3 opens, but the position line is absent | reducedDebugInfo is enabled. |
Ask an operator to run /gamerule reducedDebugInfo false, using tab completion to confirm the version’s spelling. |
| F3+B and F3+G are also disabled | The same reduced-debug rule is active. | Set reducedDebugInfo to false and reopen F3. |
| Bedrock has no coordinate box | Show Coordinates is off in the world or player settings. | Enable the option, or have an operator run /gamerule showcoordinates true. |
| The Bedrock command is unknown | The server build uses a different capitalization or command implementation. | Use command autocomplete/help and try the spelling it reports, including the showCoordinates capitalization variant. |
| The command says you lack permission | You are not an operator or the server console restricts gamerules. | Ask the owner or an administrator to run the command, or change the world option if you control the save. |
| Coordinates differ after switching editions or worlds | Java and Bedrock expose different interfaces, and each world has its own gamerule state. | Apply the edition-appropriate method in the specific world where you need the display. |
Server-owner checklist
If you administer a shared server, use this sequence before asking every player to troubleshoot their keyboard or settings:
- Identify the edition and version of the server. Java instructions do not enable a Bedrock HUD, and Bedrock instructions do not create an F3 overlay.
- For Java, ask a player to press
F3orFn+F3. If the screen is present but coordinates are not, inspectreducedDebugInfo. - For Bedrock, inspect the world’s Show Coordinates option and the
showcoordinatesgamerule. - Use tab completion to verify the gamerule spelling accepted by the installed version before publishing instructions to your community.
- Test with a normal player account after changing the rule. An administrator’s command success does not prove that every player has the same permissions or client settings.
- Tell players whether the setting is intended to remain on. Java F3 is a temporary debug overlay, while Bedrock’s coordinate box is designed to stay on the HUD until disabled.
Choosing the right method
Use Java F3 when you need diagnostic information
The Java debug screen is the appropriate choice when you need coordinates alongside other technical information, such as chunk or bounding-box diagnostics. It is built into the client and does not require changing the world’s gamerules unless the server has reduced the debug output.
Use Bedrock’s HUD when players navigate frequently
The Bedrock display is better for a group that wants coordinates visible during ordinary play without holding a function key. Enable it in the world options for a persistent world-wide setting, or use the gamerule when an operator needs to change a running world.
Do not confuse a client display with a permission change
Showing coordinates does not grant building rights, teleportation, or access to server commands. Java’s F3 screen is a client overlay; Bedrock’s option controls a HUD element. Gamerule commands, by contrast, require the authority to change world settings. Keep those two decisions separate when configuring a survival server.
Version notes and limits
Coordinate behavior can change between Java snapshots, releases, Bedrock updates and server software. Java’s 1.21.9 debug-screen change is one documented example: section-relative information may be visible even when reduced debug information is not enabled. The precise wording and capitalization of gamerules can also differ across versions and implementations.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor that reason, treat the commands in this guide as the standard forms to try, then trust the command autocomplete or help output of the server you actually run. If a server uses plugins, proxies or a custom implementation, test the gamerule in that environment before writing a permanent rule into onboarding documentation.
