For PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS on Windows PC, the quickest way to display FPS is Steam’s built-in counter: open Steam → Settings → In Game, choose a position under In-game FPS counter, then launch PUBG. If you need frame time, temperatures, GPU usage, or CPU usage, use the NVIDIA App or AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition overlay instead.

These instructions are for the Steam PC version. PUBG Mobile and the PlayStation/Xbox versions use different performance controls.

Choose the right FPS method

  • Steam PC player: Start with Steam’s FPS counter. It is the simplest option.
  • NVIDIA GPU: Use the NVIDIA App overlay if you also want hardware and performance metrics.
  • AMD Radeon GPU: Use the AMD Adrenalin performance overlay.
  • Diagnosing stutter: Use an overlay that shows frame time, or a dedicated tool such as NVIDIA FrameView, because average FPS can hide brief drops.
  • PUBG Mobile or console: PC overlays do not apply. Use the game’s or device’s own performance settings.

Show FPS in PUBG with Steam

Steam’s current client includes an in-game overlay performance monitor. Menu wording and layout can change, but the setting is under Steam’s In Game options. Steam documents the feature in its official overlay performance-monitor guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Exit PUBG, or leave it running in the background.
  2. Open the Steam client.
  3. Click Steam in the upper-left corner and select Settings.
  4. Open In Game.
  5. Find In-game FPS counter, or the equivalent performance-monitor setting if Steam has changed the label.
  6. Choose Top-left, Top-right, Bottom-left, or Bottom-right.
  7. Enable a high-contrast color if that option is available and the number is difficult to see.
  8. Close Settings and start PUBG through Steam.

The FPS number should appear in the corner you selected. A basic counter is usually the best choice when you only need to confirm whether a graphics change affected performance.

Enable the counter while PUBG is running

  1. Press Shift+Tab to open the Steam overlay.
  2. Open the overlay’s settings.
  3. Go to In Game.
  4. Enable or configure the FPS counter.

If Shift+Tab does nothing, the Steam overlay may be disabled globally or for PUBG. Enable the overlay, restart Steam, and try again.

Hide the Steam FPS counter

Return to Steam → Settings → In Game and set the FPS counter to Not displayed, or disable the relevant performance-monitor option. If two counters are visible, another overlay is also active.

Show FPS with the NVIDIA App

NVIDIA’s current instructions use the NVIDIA App, although some support pages and older installations still use GeForce Experience terminology. The exact menus may differ between versions.

  1. Open the NVIDIA App.
  2. Go to Settings → Features.
  3. Make sure In-Game Overlay is enabled.

To hide the overlay, press Alt+R again or disable the statistics overlay in the NVIDIA App. If the shortcut does nothing, check that In-Game Overlay is enabled and that another application has not taken over the hotkey.

Show FPS with AMD Adrenalin

AMD’s performance overlay is part of the full installation of AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. AMD notes that available options can vary by system configuration and that its documented screenshots were based on Adrenalin 23.9.1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
  2. Search for Metrics.
  3. Select Performance Metrics.
  4. Enable the Frame Rate metric.
  5. Open the overlay controls and enable Show Metrics Overlay.
  6. Position or resize the overlay if required.
  7. Launch PUBG and press Ctrl+Shift+O to toggle the overlay.

Depending on your installation, the overlay can show frame rate, frame time, GPU and CPU utilization, temperatures, clocks, power, and memory information. If Ctrl+Shift+O does not work, open AMD’s hotkey settings and check or reassign the shortcut.

PUBG FPS counter not showing? Try these fixes

  1. Confirm the platform. Steam’s counter applies to a PUBG installation launched through Steam. It will not automatically work with a different PC distribution, PUBG Mobile, or a console.
  2. Enable the relevant overlay. Check Steam Overlay, NVIDIA In-Game Overlay, or AMD’s Show Metrics Overlay setting.
  3. Restart Steam or the overlay app. Close and reopen Steam, the NVIDIA App, or AMD Software after changing its settings.
  4. Test another Steam game. If the counter fails everywhere, the problem is probably Steam or the overlay rather than PUBG.
  5. Disable competing overlays temporarily. Test with NVIDIA App, AMD Adrenalin, Xbox Game Bar, Discord, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, and recording or monitoring software turned off. Multiple overlays can conflict or place several counters on screen.
  6. Try borderless or windowed mode. Some overlays behave differently in exclusive fullscreen.
  7. Update Windows and your graphics driver. Restart the PC after installing updates.
  8. Verify PUBG’s files. In Steam, open PUBG’s properties and use the installed-files verification option.
  9. Remove old launch options. Do not add random “FPS boost” commands. PUBG Support’s current performance guide recommends removing old Steam launch options while troubleshooting, along with updating drivers and verifying files.

On a laptop with hybrid graphics, also check that PUBG and the monitoring software are using the expected GPU. Running the game and overlay with different administrator permissions can likewise prevent an overlay from attaching.

Does an FPS overlay reduce performance?

A simple text counter normally has little practical impact, but no overlay should be described as guaranteed to have zero overhead. Hardware-monitoring overlays that display many metrics may do more work than a basic FPS counter. If performance changes when you enable one, compare the same scene with the overlay on and off.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a clean comparison, use only one overlay. Disable recording, monitoring, and competing overlays before measuring.

How to interpret the FPS number

FPS means frames per second: the number of rendered images the game produces each second. A higher number can make motion feel smoother, but a stable frame rate is often more useful than a higher number that constantly fluctuates.

Do not confuse FPS with:

  • Refresh rate: Your monitor’s refresh rate is measured in hertz (Hz).
  • Ping: Network latency is measured in milliseconds (ms).
  • Frame time: The time required to render one frame, also measured in milliseconds.

FPS alone does not guarantee better aim, lower input lag, or smoother gameplay. Those outcomes also depend on frame pacing, your monitor’s refresh rate, graphics settings, hardware, and network conditions.

Use a repeatable PUBG test

Compare the counter in the same resolution, graphics settings, display mode, and type of gameplay. Check more than the lobby: observe the aircraft and landing sequence, dense urban areas, close-range fights, smoke, explosions, and heavy vehicle activity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A high average can hide short drops. If your overlay provides frame time or low-percentile measurements, use them to identify inconsistent performance. NVIDIA’s FrameView documentation explains why percentile-style results can show lower-performing moments that an average does not reveal.

PUBG Mobile and console players

Steam, NVIDIA App, and AMD Adrenalin instructions are for Windows PC. They do not transfer to a phone or console.

On PUBG Mobile, available frame-rate options depend on the device, game build, region, and compatibility. PUBG Mobile has officially announced high-frame-rate support for compatible phones in the past, but the cited announcement is from 2020 and should not be treated as a current universal FPS-counter or frame-rate guarantee. Check the current graphics and frame-rate options inside the mobile game.

On PlayStation and Xbox, use the console’s display or performance settings and any performance mode exposed by the game. PC overlay shortcuts cannot be used there.
