How to Soft Reset a Project Zomboid Server (Without Wiping the Map)

A soft reset should preserve your Project Zomboid map while changing server and player identity state. Follow a clean-stop backup workflow and use only the reset control documented for your build or hosting environment.

A Project Zomboid soft reset is intended to preserve the existing world while resetting server and player identity state. The exact result depends on the server build and hosting method: when the reset identity no longer matches a client, that player may have to create a new character, while the map data remains in place.

Stop the server cleanly, back up the entire Zomboid user folder, apply the reset control documented for your installation, and test with one administrator before allowing everyone back in. Never delete Zomboid/Saves as part of a soft reset; that is the destructive full-wipe procedure.

What a soft reset changes

Project Zomboid stores server identity information separately from the world files. In the example server profile, ResetID records whether the server has undergone a soft reset, while ServerPlayerID identifies the player-state generation associated with that server. If the reset values no longer match what a client expects, the client must create a new character.

A soft reset is therefore a state and identity operation, not a command to regenerate the terrain. Its intended behavior is to retain the existing world data while invalidating some existing player/server identity state. The exact player and world behavior must be verified on the particular Project Zomboid build, profile, and hosting wrapper you run; a panel toggle in one environment is not proof that another installation accepts the same setting.

Decide whether you actually need a soft reset

Use a soft reset when the world should remain

Choose this route when your priority is to keep the current map and its accumulated world data but make the server establish a new identity generation. Existing clients may be asked to create new characters after the reset IDs change. Make that consequence explicit to players before maintenance.

Use a full wipe only when a new map is wanted

If the objective is a completely fresh map, a soft reset is the wrong operation. A full wipe removes the server’s Saves folder and starts a new map on the next launch. That action is destructive unless you can restore a backup.

Soft reset and full wipe compared

Operation Map and world data Player identities Configuration Reversibility Typical control
Soft reset Intended to preserve the existing world; verify the result on the exact build. Clients can require new characters when reset identity values no longer match. Server settings remain in the active profile unless the hosting panel changes them. Moderate risk; restore the complete backup if the result is wrong. A build- or panel-specific reset setting.
Full wipe The Saves folder is deleted and a new map is generated at restart. New player state is expected. The profile may also be changed, including server and player identity values. Destructive without a verified backup. Manual file deletion and profile changes, or a panel’s documented wipe action.

Prepare the server before resetting

1. Announce maintenance and the character consequence

Tell players when the server will stop and whether they should expect to make new characters. A soft reset can invalidate existing client/server identity matching even though the map is retained. Record the current server name, profile name, build string, and any mod or workshop changes so you can compare the post-reset state.

2. Identify the active profile and save location

Do not assume that the profile called servertest is the one currently running. Dedicated servers can be started with another profile name, and host panels often select the profile for you. Confirm the name in the startup configuration or panel, then locate the matching profile and multiplayer save directory.

On Windows, the Project Zomboid dedicated-server guide places server profiles in:

C:Users<you>ZomboidServer

The active profile commonly includes servertest.ini, but the filename changes when a different profile is selected. Editing an unused profile will not affect the running world.

3. Stop with a clean exit

Have all players leave, issue the normal server shutdown, and wait until the process has exited. Do not copy, rename, or edit a live world. A clean stop prevents the backup from capturing files while they are being written and is the required starting point for safe file work.

4. Back up the complete Zomboid folder

Copy the entire user-data folder to storage that is separate from the live directory. At minimum, preserve the multiplayer saves and the active server profile; a complete copy also retains settings and other data you may need to diagnose or undo the reset.

  • Keep the complete Zomboid folder, not only one configuration file.
  • Include the active profile’s .ini file, such as servertest.ini.
  • Include the multiplayer Saves directory.
  • Record the backup date, server build, profile name, and hosting environment.
  • Do not overwrite the only backup with a post-reset copy until the result has been checked.

The dedicated-server guidance specifically recommends making a backup of servertest.ini before editing it. Keeping the whole folder gives you a safer restoration point if the wrong profile or save is changed.

5. Record the hosting method

Write down whether the server is a Steam-installed dedicated server, a container, or a managed host panel. The reset control and startup syntax can differ between those environments. Also record the exact branch or build shown by the server and client; a reset cannot fix a client/server version mismatch.

Apply the soft reset using the control your installation supports

Steam-installed or manually managed servers

Use the reset option documented for the exact server build and launch process. There is no single command-line form that is established as safe for every current distribution, so do not paste an unverified -Dsoftreset argument or substitute a setting from another guide. If your installation has no documented soft-reset control, stop before changing identity fields manually and verify the procedure for that build.

Docker-based installations

One Docker configuration reference exposes a startup variable named SOFTRESET. In that wrapper, 0 means false and 1 means true. This is an implementation-specific convenience variable, not a Project Zomboid guarantee that every container or host panel accepts the same name. Set it only in the wrapper’s documented environment, then follow that wrapper’s restart procedure.

Managed host panels

A panel may present a checkbox, a reset action, or an environment-variable field. Check which profile and save directory the panel targets, whether the action runs once or on every restart, and whether it creates an automatic backup. Confirm that the panel supports the same Project Zomboid build you are running. If the panel does not explain whether its action is a soft reset or a full wipe, treat it as unknown and obtain clarification before proceeding.

Safe soft-reset procedure

  1. Schedule maintenance. Announce the stop, warn that characters may need to be recreated, and note the expected return window.
  2. Shut down normally. Stop the dedicated server and wait for a clean process exit. Never edit the active world while it is running.
  3. Create and verify the backup. Copy the complete Zomboid folder, including the active profile and multiplayer Saves. Open the backup and confirm that the files are present before continuing.
  4. Confirm the target profile. Match the profile name used at startup or in the panel with the directory and .ini file you are about to change. Preserve an untouched copy of servertest.ini or the equivalent profile file.
  5. Apply the documented soft-reset control. Use the setting for your exact installation. For the Docker wrapper that defines it, this means enabling SOFTRESET=1; other environments may expose a different control or none at all.
  6. Start the server and wait for a complete startup. Do not test while the process is still loading. Watch the server console or panel until it reports that startup has finished.
  7. Test with one administrator or test player. Connect first with a client whose build matches the server. Check that the expected world is present and note whether the client is prompted to create a new character.
  8. Check the operational details. Verify the active profile, map, mods, workshop items, and permissions. Only after this test passes should you announce that the server is open to everyone.
  9. Preserve the pre-reset backup. Keep it until players have connected successfully and you are satisfied that the reset produced the intended state.

Which files matter

The server profile

The profile’s .ini file contains the server settings and identity fields. The example servertest.ini documents ResetID and separately lists ServerPlayerID. Treat those names as profile data, not as an invitation to change arbitrary numbers. A soft reset should be performed through the supported control for the build or wrapper so the server can update the appropriate state consistently.

The multiplayer save directory

The Saves directory contains the world data that a soft reset is intended to retain. Do not delete it, move it, or replace it with an empty directory when performing a soft reset. If you want a new world, stop and follow a separately verified full-wipe procedure instead.

Mods and workshop items

The profile treats Mods and WorkshopItems as separate settings. Keep both lists aligned between the server and clients. A reset does not remove the need for matching mod identifiers, load order, and workshop content.

What a documented full wipe does

A Steam-community support reply dated 22 March 2021 describes a full reset this way: “To fully reset it, you have to manually delete the “Saves” folder in the servers “Zomboid” folder to delete the map, then change the ServerID and PlayerID in the servertest.ini (so players will have new characters on the server).”

That statement is useful for distinguishing a full wipe from a soft reset. It is not a promise that current Build 42 distributions, panels, or profile names use the same process. If you choose a full wipe, make a separate backup, verify the active profile, and confirm the current build’s instructions before deleting anything.

Troubleshoot the result

The server comes back with the old state

First compare the profile and save path you edited with the profile and path used at startup. A common cause is changing an inactive .ini file while the server loads another profile. Also check whether the panel copied data into a container volume or another host directory. Restore nothing until you have identified the actual active location.

Players cannot join

Confirm that client and server build strings match and that the server completed startup before anyone tested. Then compare the server’s mod and workshop lists with the client. A reset does not bypass version, content, or connection requirements.

The reset appears to have done nothing to a character

Check that the supported reset control was enabled for the correct startup and profile. Review the server’s identity values and logs, but do not randomly edit ResetID, ServerPlayerID, ServerID, or PlayerID without build-specific documentation. If the control is wrapper-specific, verify that the wrapper actually passed it to this restart rather than leaving a one-time setting enabled for a different instance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mods load differently after the restart

Compare both Mods and WorkshopItems with the pre-reset backup. Restore the known-good lists if they were changed during maintenance, then restart and test with a matching client.

You deleted the wrong directory

Stop the server immediately and do not allow it to generate more data in the affected location. Preserve the current directory as evidence, locate the pre-reset backup, and restore only after confirming the profile and save path. If no backup exists, recovery may not be possible; this is why deleting Saves must never be part of an ordinary soft reset.

Your panel offers no clear soft-reset option

Do not infer a command from an unrelated guide. Ask the host for the exact action and whether it preserves the current save. If the host cannot identify the build-specific behavior, use a local backup and a documented manual procedure rather than guessing.

Connection settings that are easy to confuse with reset settings

The dedicated-server guide lists UDP port 16261 as the default server port and 16262 for the additional networking range, with 8766 depending on the Steam networking path. These are connection facts, not soft-reset commands. Changing a port will not reset characters or regenerate a map. If players cannot connect after maintenance, check the port and firewall configuration separately from the reset state.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Steam dedicated-server application is identified as app ID 380870 in one Docker configuration reference. That identifier describes the installation target for that wrapper; it does not define a universal reset syntax for every server distribution.

Final decision checklist

  • Keep the map: stop cleanly, back up the complete Zomboid folder, and use the exact build-specific soft-reset control.
  • Generate a new map: treat the action as a full wipe, verify the current procedure, and protect the backup before touching Saves.
  • Characters unexpectedly persist: verify the active profile, wrapper setting, build, and identity state rather than deleting files.
  • Players cannot connect: wait for complete startup, match client and server builds, and align Mods with WorkshopItems.
