Minecraft Bedrock has two kinds of local multiplayer: split-screen, where up to four people share one supported console display, and LAN play, where each person uses a separate device on the same local network. Split-screen is available on Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. LAN play works across LAN-capable Bedrock devices, including a PC running Bedrock, provided every player uses the same current Bedrock version and connects to the same network.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Minecraft Bedrock servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Choose the right local multiplayer method
Use split-screen when everyone is in the same room and you have one supported console plus a compatible controller for each player. Use LAN when players need separate screens or are using a mixture of supported devices connected to the same home network.

| Local option | How screens work | Hardware needed | Network requirement | Official player guidance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Console split-screen | Everyone plays on one console display. | A supported Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch and a compatible game controller for every participant. | The same console is enough for the local session; a LAN is not required for the shared-screen feature. | Up to four players on the screen at the same time. Minecraft Help reports four on Xbox One/Series X|S, PlayStation 4/5, and Nintendo Switch; two are recommended on Switch for playability. |
| Separate-device LAN | Each player uses a separate screen and device. | One LAN-capable Bedrock device per player. | Every device must be connected to the same local network. | The official LAN guidance does not set one universal player-count number; the practical limit depends on the devices, world, and network. |
Java Edition and Bedrock Edition are separate editions for multiplayer. A Java player cannot join a Bedrock world, so check the edition on every device before troubleshooting the connection.
What you need before starting
- Matching Bedrock versions: Minecraft Help requires every player to use the most recent, matching version. Update devices before creating the world.
- Supported hardware: split-screen is a console-only Bedrock feature. Supported consoles listed by Minecraft are Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. A PC running Bedrock can join a LAN world, but it should not be treated as supporting same-device split-screen.
- Controllers for split-screen: each local participant should have a compatible game controller. The console’s controller pairing and account rules still apply.
- A single local network for LAN: phones, tablets, consoles, and PCs must be on the same LAN, not on separate guest or isolated networks.
- Stable connectivity: Minecraft Help recommends a stable internet or LAN connection. LAN play is local, but an unreliable home network can still prevent discovery or interrupt a session.
- Microsoft accounts and permissions: console and mobile players must sign in to a Microsoft account. Child accounts may need multiplayer permission enabled before they can join.
- Platform online subscriptions: console online multiplayer can require Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. This is a platform online-multiplayer rule; the LAN instructions describe same-network play separately and do not establish one subscription requirement for every LAN setup.
How console split-screen works
Supported consoles and player count
Minecraft’s official product information describes split-screen as a console-only Bedrock feature and states: “Playing split screen allows up to four players to play on the screen at the same time.” Minecraft Help reports support for up to four local players on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch. Although four is the published maximum, Minecraft recommends two players on Switch for better playability. That recommendation is specific to Switch; it does not reduce the stated four-player support on the other listed consoles.

Split-screen is not the same as LAN or online multiplayer. One console renders the shared view for everyone, while LAN gives every player a separate device. Adding more controllers to a console does not turn a PC version into split-screen, and opening a LAN world is unnecessary when the group is sharing one supported console.
Starting a split-screen session
- Use a supported console edition of Minecraft Bedrock and make sure the game is updated.
- Connect and pair one compatible controller for each person who will play. Confirm that the console recognizes every controller before loading the world.
- Sign in the participating console profiles as required by the platform. If a child account cannot join, check its Microsoft-account multiplayer permission before changing world settings.
- Open or create the Bedrock world on the console. Have additional players join through the controller prompt shown by that console and game build; the exact confirmation button can vary by platform.
- Keep the total at four or fewer local players. On Nintendo Switch, start with two players if four-person play makes the shared view difficult to use.
There is no separate LAN toggle needed for the shared-screen feature. If the group wants each player on a different screen, stop using split-screen and follow the LAN host and join procedures below.
How to play Minecraft Bedrock over LAN
LAN (Local Area Network) play connects separate devices that are on the same local network. Minecraft Help’s requirements are straightforward: all players need the most recent Minecraft version, LAN-capable devices, and the same network connection. The host must also make the world visible to LAN players.
Host: make a Bedrock world available on the LAN
- Connect the host device to the local network that the other players will use.
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock and choose Play.
- Find the existing world you want to host and select its pencil icon to open the world settings.
- Open Multiplayer. Enable both Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players.
- Select Play to start the world. Leave the world running while the other players search the Worlds tab.
Both switches matter. Multiplayer game permits other players to participate in the world, while Visible to LAN Players makes the active world discoverable to devices on the same LAN. If either setting is off, a joining device may not see the world.

Join: find the host’s LAN world
- Connect the joining device to the same local network as the host. Do not use a separate guest network or an isolated connection.
- Wait until the host has started the world and is inside the game.
- Launch Minecraft Bedrock and choose Play.
- Open the Worlds tab.
- Select the world marked LAN.
The LAN label is the confirmation that the world has been advertised as a local session. If it is absent, return to the host’s Multiplayer settings and verify both required options before checking the network.
Accounts, subscriptions, and edition compatibility
Microsoft-account sign-in
Console and mobile devices require Microsoft-account sign-in for Minecraft multiplayer. A child account can be signed in correctly and still be unable to join if its account-level multiplayer permission is disabled. Resolve that permission first; repeatedly changing the world’s LAN switches will not override an account restriction.
Console subscription rules
Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo platforms can apply an online-multiplayer subscription requirement through Xbox Game Pass Core, PlayStation Plus, or Nintendo Switch Online. Treat that as a platform rule for online multiplayer access. Minecraft’s LAN instructions separately require devices to share a local network, so do not assume that one subscription policy automatically explains every same-network failure. If a platform displays a subscription prompt, follow that platform’s current requirement for the account and activity you are attempting.
Bedrock versus Java
Every participant in this guide must be running Bedrock. Java players cannot join Bedrock worlds, even when both computers are on the same router. Confirm the edition before comparing IP addresses, firewall settings, or world visibility; an edition mismatch cannot be repaired through LAN settings.

Split-screen versus LAN: practical trade-offs
| Question | Split-screen answer | LAN answer |
|---|---|---|
| Does everyone share a display? | Yes. One console display is divided among local players. | No. Each participant uses a separate device and screen. |
| How many devices are needed? | One supported console, plus a compatible controller per participant. | One supported Bedrock device per participant. |
| Is a home network required? | Not for the shared-console session itself. | Yes. Every device must be on the same LAN. |
| What player number is officially stated? | Up to four local players; two are recommended on Switch for playability. | No single universal LAN number is stated in the official guidance. |
| Can a PC use the method? | A PC running Bedrock should not be described as offering same-device split-screen. | Yes, a PC running Bedrock can join a LAN world if it meets the version, device, and network requirements. |
| What account issues can block play? | Controller profiles, Microsoft-account sign-in, and child-account permissions can matter. | The same account requirements apply, plus the host’s LAN visibility settings and network discovery. |
Troubleshooting when a LAN world is missing
Work through these checks in order. Each one removes a different failure point, so changing several settings at once makes the cause harder to identify.
1. Match the Bedrock version
On every device, verify that Minecraft is fully updated and that all players are on the same current Bedrock version. A world can be invisible or unavailable when one device is behind, even if the devices are otherwise connected to the same router. Update first, then restart Minecraft and repeat the host and join sequence.
2. Confirm the actual network
Check the network name on every device. The host and joining players must be on the same LAN, not merely connected to the same internet service. Guest Wi-Fi, client isolation, and other router separation features can place devices on networks that cannot discover one another. Move every device to the same non-isolated network before testing again.
3. Recheck both host settings
On the host, open the world’s pencil icon, choose Multiplayer, and verify that Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players are both enabled. Start the world after saving or applying those settings. A world that was opened before visibility was enabled may need to be closed and started again.

4. Start the host world first
The joining player should search only after the host is inside the world. If the host is still on the title screen or world-loading screen, the LAN entry may not exist yet. Once the host is playing, the joining device should open Play, select Worlds, and look for the LAN label.

Confirm that every device is running Bedrock rather than Java. Then confirm Microsoft-account sign-in on console or mobile devices and review multiplayer permission for child accounts. An edition mismatch or account restriction is independent of router discovery and requires the corresponding account or edition fix.
6. Separate platform restrictions from LAN discovery
If the platform reports an online-subscription requirement, check the applicable Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo policy for that account and activity. Do not use a subscription change as a substitute for checking the LAN itself, because the official LAN procedure still depends on same-network connectivity and the host’s visibility settings.
7. Escalate only after the basic checks
Persistent failures can involve account permissions, platform restrictions, router isolation, firewall rules, or platform-specific bugs. Minecraft’s LAN guidance does not publish one universal fix for all of these cases. Record which devices, editions, versions, network type, and account types were tested; that information makes a platform or network support diagnosis more precise.

How to plan a local session
For a family sharing one console
Choose split-screen, pair the required controllers, and keep the group within the four-player maximum. On Switch, two players are the recommended starting point for playability. No LAN discovery step is needed for this arrangement.
For friends with separate screens
Choose one Bedrock device as the host, update every device, connect everyone to the same LAN, and enable both Multiplayer options before starting the host world. Joining players should wait for the host to enter the world and then select the entry marked LAN.
For a mixed-device group
A console, mobile device, and PC can participate together only when each is running the Bedrock edition supported by that device and all are connected to the same LAN. The PC can join the LAN world, but it does not provide same-device split-screen. Keep the distinction clear: one shared console display is split-screen; multiple devices on one network are LAN.
Bottom line
For one-room play on a supported Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch, split-screen is the simplest route: use a compatible controller for each participant and plan for up to four local players, with two recommended on Switch. For separate screens, use Bedrock LAN: update every device, put them on the same non-isolated network, enable Multiplayer game and Visible to LAN Players on the host, start the world, and select its LAN-marked entry from the joining device’s Worlds tab.
