A 2×2 Rubik’s Cube is solved by arranging its eight corner pieces: first complete one layer with its side colors matched, then put the four top corners in the right locations, and finally twist them into place. This beginner method uses a small set of moves and works on a standard pocket cube.
What you need and how to read the moves
You only need a 2×2 cube to follow along. It has eight corner cubies and no edges or center pieces, so every move in this tutorial concerns corners. A smoother-turning 2×2 speed cube may be more comfortable, but it is not required.
Choose a starting color, such as white, and keep the cube oriented consistently while you work. In the move sequences below, each letter names a face:
- R = right, L = left
- U = up, D = down
- F = front, B = back
A bare letter means turn that face a quarter-turn clockwise, judged while looking directly at that face. A prime mark (′) means a counterclockwise quarter-turn; 2 means a half-turn (180 degrees). For example, R′ is a counterclockwise turn of the right face.

Step 1: Solve a complete first layer
Build a layer of four corners in your chosen color. A face with four matching stickers is not enough: the other two colors on each corner must also line up with the neighboring side colors. Check all three colors on every corner so each piece goes into the correct slot.
Find and insert the first-layer corners
- Pick a target color, such as white, and place one matching corner to start the layer.
- Use the other two colors on that corner to work out where each remaining target-color corner belongs.
- Bring a target corner above its intended slot, keeping the target layer on the bottom, and use R U R′ U′ to insert it. Repeat as needed until it sits correctly.
- Continue with the other corners, checking that both side colors match their neighboring columns as well as the target face.
If a wrongly placed corner occupies the slot you need, insert another corner to dislodge it, then place the displaced piece correctly. RubikCube.org’s 2×2×2 solving guide also emphasizes checking the full corner, rather than matching only one sticker.

Step 2: Put the last-layer corners in the right locations
Turn the cube so the unfinished layer is on top. At this stage, judge a corner’s location by its two side colors: they should match the two columns beneath that corner. Its top-color sticker may still face a side; that is orientation, which comes next.
If one top corner is already in the correct location, hold it at the front-right. If none is correct, choose any top corner and hold it there. Apply this sequence:

Check the locations again and repeat as needed, keeping the correctly located corner at the front-right when one is available. This sequence changes corner locations; it does not necessarily turn their top-color stickers upward.
Step 3: Twist the corners to finish
Turn the cube over so the unfinished corners are on the bottom. Hold a corner that still needs twisting at the front-right, then repeat the following complete sequence until its target-color sticker faces down:

Without rotating the whole cube, turn only the bottom layer to bring the next unsolved corner to the front-right. Repeat the full sequence until that corner’s target color also faces down. Continue for any remaining corners. During this step the other pieces may look scrambled; finish each full sequence and keep moving only the prescribed bottom layer between corners.
Once all four target-color stickers face down, turn the bottom layer to align the completed layer. The cube should now be solved.

Why the method can look confusing
- The first face looks complete, but the sides do not match. One or more corners is in the wrong slot. Check all three colors on each corner before moving on.
- A top corner’s color points sideways. That corner may still be in the correct location. Step 2 is about location; Step 3 changes orientation.
- The cube looks worse during the last step. This is expected while applying the corner-twisting sequence. Complete all four moves, do not rotate the cube, and move only the bottom layer to select the next corner.
Rubik’s describes its 2×2 as a beginner-friendly puzzle and says it has more than 3.6 million permutations; that figure is the manufacturer’s description on its 2×2 product page. The official Rubik’s 2×2 solution guide provides another reference for the puzzle.
