How to Solve a Murder Mystery Game: A Practical Guide

Solve a murder mystery game by learning its rules, tracking clues and claims separately, testing accounts against the timeline, and checking your theory before accusing.

To solve a murder mystery game, first learn what counts as a win, then track confirmed clues separately from characters’ claims, test each account against the timeline, and make an accusation only when one theory fits the evidence better than the alternatives. The exact method depends on the format: Hasbro’s classic CLUE rules ask you to identify a suspect, a room, and a weapon, while party mysteries rely more on role information, clues, and conversations. These are game-solving tips, not guidance for investigating a real death.

1. Find out what the game asks you to solve

Read the rules or host’s instructions before investigating. A deduction board game may have a fixed set of answers to identify; a character-driven party game may ask you to infer a killer from clues and what players reveal. Don’t assume every mystery uses CLUE’s suspect-room-weapon structure.

In Hasbro’s current F6420 CLUE edition, the goal is to work out who killed the victim, where, and with what weapon. That edition is listed for 2–6 players, ages 8 and up. Hasbro’s classic 00045 listing gives a different player range—3–6—so check the instructions for the edition in front of you rather than applying one version’s rules to another.

2. Keep a useful record of what you learn

Separate facts, claims, and open questions

Write down each clue and where it came from. Keep three categories: information the game establishes, statements made by a character or player, and questions you have not resolved. A claim can be important without being verified; recording its source helps you compare it with other evidence later.

Use the right notes for the format

For CLUE, use the detective notepad or sheet to mark cards and eliminate suspect, room, and weapon possibilities. Hasbro’s classic rules describe placing one suspect, one weapon, and one room card in the case file, then using questions and other players’ card responses to narrow down the hidden combination. Those instructions are labeled ©1986, and their mechanics are an example of that edition’s rules—not a guarantee that every later release works identically.

For a party mystery, keep a suspect list and a timeline instead. Note who supplied each detail and whether another clue or person supports it. Party-game providers describe formats in which players receive character information, question suspects, and use clues before making an accusation; the precise structure depends on the game. See Night of Mystery, SHOT!, and Freeform Games for examples of their respective approaches.

Hunt A Killer: Lakeside Slaughter - Murder Mystery Game
  • Trouble's Looming: This horror mystery has an extended lakehouse vacation cut short when Ryan discovers his wife Monica dead. Investigate the crime scene and deduce who killed her.

3. Ask questions that can change your theory

Instead of asking only whether someone seems suspicious, ask questions that test a specific account:

  • Where were you at the relevant time?
  • When did you arrive or leave?
  • Who else could confirm that?
  • What clue supports your version of events?
  • Does your account fit the known timeline and locations?

In a party game, compare answers with what other characters say and with clues the game has revealed. In CLUE, ask questions using the actions and limits described in your edition’s rules. A confident answer, motive, or inconsistency can point you toward a useful follow-up, but none proves guilt on its own.

4. Test alibis and contradictions against the whole story

Put the reported events in order and check whether the times, locations, and statements can all be true together. When two accounts conflict, look for independent support or another clue that could resolve the difference. An inconsistency might indicate a lie, but it could also reflect a mistaken memory, a secret unrelated to the murder, or a rule that allows characters to withhold information.

Party mysteries are designed around clues and questioning, but their rules vary. SHOT! describes assessing motive, means, and opportunity; treat those as prompts for investigation, not a substitute for checking what the particular game establishes. A plausible motive is not enough if the timeline or other evidence does not fit.

5. Build a theory, then try to disprove it

Once you have a likely answer, check it against every important clue and the sequence of events. Ask whether another suspect explains the same evidence just as well, whether any detail contradicts your theory, and what information you still need. If your explanation depends on ignoring a clue or accepting an unsupported claim, keep investigating if the rules allow it.

Party-game formats may end with a written accusation or a reveal. Night of Mystery, for example, describes staged story events and accusation forms; use the host’s timing and instructions rather than submitting early if the game expects more information to arrive. Before committing, compare notes with other players only when the rules permit it.

6. Make the accusation according to the rules

When the game requires a final answer, state it in the format it requests. In classic CLUE, that means naming one suspect, one room, and one weapon; in a party mystery, it may mean naming a killer on an accusation form and explaining the case. Follow the rules about when and how accusations can be made, since a wrong accusation may carry a penalty or end your investigation.

What changes between board games and party mysteries?

Format What you work from How to keep track
CLUE and similar deduction board games Hidden answer and information revealed through the game’s components and actions Mark known cards or eliminated possibilities on the edition’s notepad or sheet
Character-driven party mysteries Role information, clues, conversations, and the game’s staged events Track statements by source, compare accounts, and build a timeline

These formats share a basic discipline—collect information, distinguish evidence from claims, and test a theory—but their rules, player counts, and available actions differ. Use the instructions for the game you are playing.
