Space Engineers has no pirate-spawn command or menu. The dependable, documented method is to build or paste a pirate-style outpost, give its radio antenna a recognized pirate trigger name, transfer the base to the SPRT faction, and let its drones respond when you enter range. Enable drones before you begin, and keep the antenna’s coverage away from your own facilities so you do not create nonstop attacks at home.

What “spawning pirates” means in Space Engineers

Pirates are not selected from a spawn list. You create the conditions used by a pirate outpost: a powered base with defensive turrets and a radio antenna, an antenna name recognized by the game’s pirate-antennas data, and ownership assigned to SPRT. The resulting base defends itself with drones when a player approaches.

This is an in-game setup rather than a separate mod or physical item. The documented procedure starts in Creative mode so you can paste or assemble the outpost, then returns the world to Survival for the attack scenario. The exact antenna trigger list can change with game updates, so treat the current game data and live official wiki as authoritative over older examples.

Requirements before you build the outpost

Enable drones in World Settings

Open the world settings and make sure Enable Drones is active. If it is disabled, the outpost may exist and appear hostile without producing the drone attacks you are trying to test.

Use Creative mode for construction

The documented setup uses Creative mode to paste a ready-made base or build one quickly. You need a powered grid, defensive turrets and a radio antenna. A laser antenna is a different block and is not the trigger used by this method.

Prepare a safe test location

Place the outpost far enough from your own base that the pirate antenna’s broadcast range does not overlap it. An overlap can make your main base the effective target and produce continual attacks instead of a controlled encounter. Keep a save from before the ownership transfer so you can reposition or rebuild without losing your original work.

Know the required faction

The finished grid must belong to the SPRT faction. Leaving the grid under your own identity does not create the documented pirate behavior; faction ownership is part of the trigger setup.

Step-by-step: create a pirate attack in a saved world

  1. Open World Settings and turn on Enable Drones. Apply the setting before testing the base. If you change it later, save and reload as necessary so the world is using the new setting.
  2. Enter Creative mode. Paste a pirate-style outpost or construct a base with power, defensive turrets and a radio antenna. The outpost must be an operating grid, not an unpowered shell.
  3. Place the outpost away from your settlement. Leave the antenna’s possible broadcast area clear of your own base, ships and other assets you do not want to defend against repeated drone calls.
  4. Select the radio antenna and rename it. Use a name from the game’s pirate trigger list. The official wiki gives NO TRESSPASSERS as an example, including that spelling. Do not silently “correct” it to a different phrase and assume it will work. The example is not the complete list.
  5. Set the antenna’s range. Choose a range that covers the intended approach route but does not reach your own base. A deliberately short range can create a compact test area; a larger range gives you an earlier warning but increases the chance of covering friendly structures.
  6. Power-check the grid. Confirm that the outpost and its antenna are energized. The antenna is the block that calls the drones, so a disconnected, damaged or unpowered system cannot perform the same way as a live outpost.
  7. Transfer ownership to SPRT. Use the ownership controls for the base and its relevant blocks, then assign the grid to the SPRT faction. Check the antenna and defensive systems after the transfer; mixed ownership can leave individual blocks unable to operate for the faction-owned grid.
  8. Save the world while still in Creative. This gives you a rollback point if the antenna name, range or ownership is wrong.
  9. Return to Survival. Approach the outpost from outside its coverage and watch for the warning beacon or other hostile response. Do not fly directly into turret range while troubleshooting the antenna; first establish whether the trigger is working.

How the warning and drone trigger work

Approach distance is not the same as sensor distance

The documented Raiding Outpost mk.1 example illustrates two ranges. At roughly 20 km, an approaching player can encounter a beacon named BEWARE OF TRESPASSING. The outpost’s sensors then govern when the attack response begins. Seeing the beacon is therefore an early warning, not proof that drones have already launched.

The antenna calls the defenders

When you enter the relevant sensor area, the outpost starts spawning attack drones. Those drones defend the pirate grid rather than appearing as a general world event. Their presence depends on the outpost’s systems remaining active.

Destroying or de-energizing the calling antenna stops new spawns

According to the documented behavior, drone spawning stops when the antenna that called the drones is destroyed or de-energized. This gives you a tactical objective: disabling the calling antenna can end the stream of new attackers, although it does not imply that drones already in flight disappear immediately.

Finding valid pirate antenna names

Use the installed game data for the current list

The trigger list is incomplete in the public example. To see the names available in your installed version, open the game’s ContentDataPirateAntennas.sbc file. Search the file for the antenna names used by the pirate system and copy a recognized name exactly when renaming your radio antenna.

The file is a version-sensitive reference. A name that worked in an older build may be removed, changed or joined by new entries after an update. If the game does not react to a name, compare it with the current file rather than repeatedly changing unrelated blocks.

Do not confuse beacon text with the trigger name

BEWARE OF TRESPASSING is the beacon name shown in the Raiding Outpost mk.1 example. The trigger is associated with the radio antenna’s recognized pirate name; a visible beacon message is not automatically a valid antenna trigger. Keep the two blocks and their names conceptually separate when diagnosing a failed setup.

Range planning: prevent attacks on your own base

The antenna broadcasts over a configurable radius. If that radius overlaps your home base, the pirate system can treat your own structures as part of the encounter area. The practical result is repeated attacks while you are doing ordinary construction or production.

  • Build the test outpost in a separate sector. Distance gives you room to approach and retreat without crossing your normal traffic lanes.
  • Start with conservative range. Increase it only after confirming that the trigger works. A small coverage area is easier to reason about than a large overlapping sphere.
  • Map your approach route. Mark where you expect the warning beacon and where you expect the sensors to begin spawning drones.
  • Keep a rollback save. If the range is wrong, reload and adjust the antenna instead of trying to defend a base that is being called constantly.

Range is a placement decision, not a guaranteed “difficulty” control. It changes where the antenna can call the encounter; it does not provide a published rate or fixed number of drones.

Creative-to-Survival workflow that avoids common mistakes

Build and verify before transferring ownership

While the grid is still under your control, inspect power, antenna range, turret placement and the exact antenna name. Ownership transfer is the final faction step, so it is more efficient to correct construction errors first.

Transfer the whole defensive system

The outpost needs an operating antenna and defensive blocks after the SPRT transfer. If a block remains owned by another faction or becomes inaccessible, the visual appearance of a pirate base can remain while the expected behavior fails.

Test from outside the antenna coverage

Begin the Survival test well away from the grid and approach along the route you planned. This separates a missing trigger from an already-active encounter and gives you time to observe the beacon before entering sensor range.

Use destruction as a controlled stop

If attacks begin before you are ready, target the calling antenna or remove its power. The documented behavior says that either destruction or de-energizing that antenna stops further drone spawning. Restore the saved world afterward if you are only testing.

Troubleshooting by symptom

What you see Likely cause What to check
No drones appear Drones are disabled, the antenna is not powered, the name is not recognized, or the grid is not owned by SPRT. Recheck World Settings, antenna power, the exact name in PirateAntennas.sbc, and faction ownership.
The base is present but behaves like a normal player base The grid or its defensive blocks were not transferred to SPRT. Inspect ownership on the base, antenna and turrets, then save and retest.
You see a beacon but no attack starts You are outside the sensor area, or the outpost’s antenna/power state changed. Approach gradually, verify the antenna remains energized and enter the outpost’s sensor range.
Attacks happen around your home base The pirate antenna range overlaps your settlement. Reload the setup save, move the outpost or reduce its range, then test from a separate route.
A trigger phrase does nothing The phrase is misspelled, is only a beacon label, or is no longer in the installed version’s trigger list. Copy a current entry from ContentDataPirateAntennas.sbc and rename the radio antenna exactly.
New drones stop arriving The calling antenna was destroyed or lost power. Inspect the antenna and its power path; restoring both can resume the setup, while leaving it disabled ends new spawns.

Random encounters: what is and is not established

Random-encounter settings are not a reliable substitute for the controlled outpost method. A Steam guide claims that particular world settings produce pirate bases, but comments on that guide disagree about the required combination. One player reports that SPRT bases appear whenever Random Encounters is enabled, while the official wiki information shown for this topic says the PC “Star System” has no pirate bases. Those accounts conflict, and no single setting combination is established here as a guaranteed way to create a pirate base.

If you want a repeatable pirate fight, use the named-antenna outpost instead of depending on random encounters. Treat any random SPRT base as version- or scenario-dependent and verify it in the exact world configuration you are using.

Does switching off your own antenna prevent attacks?

There is no confirmed universal answer. A player report says attacks still located the player after the player’s own antenna and beacons were turned off, but that is anecdotal and does not establish a game rule. The documented behavior concerns the pirate outpost’s calling antenna: destroying or de-energizing that antenna stops new drone spawning.

For a dependable emergency stop, disable the pirate antenna itself or remove its power. Do not assume that hiding your own broadcast devices will cancel an attack already called by the SPRT outpost.

Version and platform caveats

The documented steps do not identify a patch number or publication date. Space Engineers updates can change trigger names, world-setting behavior or encounter logic. The procedure therefore has two maintenance checks: read the live official wiki before following an older walkthrough, and inspect your installed PirateAntennas.sbc file for the names available in your build.

The evidence described here applies to the PC context in which the “Star System” random-encounter note was reported. Do not assume that a console edition, a modded world or a different scenario exposes identical files, settings or encounter behavior.
