AMD Radeon owners should try AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition first, while Fan Control is useful when you want to coordinate GPU, CPU, motherboard, and case fans.
If your GPU fans are stopped at the desktop, do not assume they are broken. Many cards use Zero RPM, Fan Stop, or a similar quiet mode that starts the fans only when temperature or load rises. Test the card under load before changing anything.

First, decide what “speed up” means
Changing fan speed does not increase the GPU’s clock speed or automatically improve game performance. It can lower temperatures and sometimes prevent thermal throttling, but faster fans mainly provide additional cooling.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Make fans spin immediately: disable Zero RPM or set a nonzero minimum speed, if the hardware allows it.
- Make fans react sooner: move curve points toward lower temperatures.
- Make fans run faster at the same temperature: raise the curve vertically.
- Increase FPS: adjust resolution, graphics settings, power behavior, or GPU clocks; a faster fan alone is not a performance upgrade.
Why your GPU fans may not be spinning
Modern graphics cards often stop their fans during light workloads. Manufacturers call this feature Zero RPM, Zero Frozr, Fan Stop, or 0 dB mode. AMD describes Zero RPM as a quiet-operation feature that starts the fans as GPU load and temperature increase. See AMD’s fan-tuning documentation.

How to set a faster GPU fan curve with MSI Afterburner
Before changing the curve
- Record your GPU model and driver version.
- Close other programs that can control GPU fans or clocks.
- Install the current version from MSI’s official download page.
- Open Afterburner’s hardware monitor and note idle temperature, load temperature, fan percentage, fan RPM, and noise.
Afterburner can work with many non-MSI desktop graphics cards, but support still depends on the GPU, VBIOS, driver, and firmware. MSI notes that laptop fan behavior may be preset by BIOS and therefore unavailable to Afterburner.
Enable the fan-curve editor
- Open MSI Afterburner.
- Click the Settings gear.
- Open the Fan tab.
- Enable Enable user-defined software automatic fan control.
- Click Apply or OK.
- Return to the main window and move the points on the temperature/fan-speed graph.
- Click Apply on the main window and test the result.
MSI documents this procedure in its Afterburner support guide.
A conservative starting curve
The following is a starting point, not a universal temperature specification. Your card’s minimum fan speed, cooler, hotspot temperature, memory temperature, room temperature, and noise tolerance may require different values.
| GPU temperature | Starting fan speed |
|---|---|
| 40°C | 20–25%, or the card’s minimum stable speed |
| 55°C | 30–35% |
| 65°C | 45–50% |
| 75°C | 60–70% |
| 80°C | 75–85% |
| 85°C and above | 90–100% temporarily while investigating the cause |
Do not treat these values as manufacturer guarantees. Fan percentage is not the same as RPM across different cards, and some cards reject low manual speeds. Use a gradual slope rather than abrupt jumps, and use hysteresis or delay when the software provides it so the fans do not repeatedly ramp up and down.

How to control Radeon fans with AMD Adrenalin
Radeon owners do not necessarily need a third-party utility. AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition includes fan tuning on supported cards.
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Go to Performance → Tuning.
- Select a custom tuning mode if required.
- Enable Fan Tuning.
- Choose whether to leave Zero RPM enabled.
- Disable Zero RPM if you want continuous fan operation and the card permits it.
- Enable Advanced Control, where available.
- Adjust the temperature and fan-speed points.
- Click Apply Changes.
- Save a tuning profile if the installed version offers that option.
AMD describes the Zero RPM switch, maximum fan speed, and advanced PWM/temperature curve in its official support documentation. Labels and available controls vary by Radeon generation, driver package, and OEM installation. If the Tuning tab is missing, update or reinstall the full Adrenalin package, but do not assume that every older or OEM-locked card supports manual control.
Use Fan Control for GPU and case fans together
Fan Control is a free Windows utility for users who want one interface for GPU, CPU, motherboard, and case-fan curves. Its documentation covers multiple temperature sources, custom graph curves, profiles, hysteresis, sensor mixing, and response delays. It supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but detection is not universal.
- Download the installer or portable release from the project’s official GitHub repository.
- Launch the program and allow it to detect available sensors and fan controllers.
- Identify the GPU temperature sensor and the corresponding GPU fan control.
- Create a graph curve and assign it to the GPU fan.
- For case fans, use a suitable sensor or a mixed sensor rather than blindly linking every fan to GPU temperature.
- Configure hysteresis, response delay, or start/stop behavior if needed.
- Save a profile and test it before enabling automatic startup.
Some graphics cards expose fewer control channels than physical fans. For example, three physical fans may be wired into two groups, causing one software control to change multiple fans. That is normal.
Fan Control is also not a universal laptop solution. Many laptops expose no controllable fan interface, and unusual OEM systems may provide incomplete sensor data. Check the project’s documentation and release notes for current compatibility rather than assuming detection guarantees control.

- Fan Speed Regulator: This device is a 4 wire temperature-controlled fan speed regulator that allows for automatic or manual adjustment of fan speed based on temperature (℃) readings. It features a digital display showing both the current temperature and the fan’s rotational speed in RPM (revolutions per minute). The system helps maintain optimal cooling performance and energy efficiency by increasing fan speed as temperatures rise and reducing speed when cooling demand is lower.
- X100RPM: The RPM (rotations per minute) is displayed in units of 100 RPM, which allows it to accommodate and clearly show the speeds of high-performance fans, this makes it particularly suitable for industrial or specialized applications that utilize high-RPM fans. The maximum readable value on the display is 300 × 100 RPM = 30,000 RPM, ensuring compatibility with a wide range of fan types.
- 2 Control Modes: The device offers both manual and automatic fan speed control modes, giving users flexibility to adapt to various cooling needs and environments. This dual-mode system provides an ideal balance between user control and intelligent automation.
- Temperature Probe: To ensure accurate thermal regulation, the fan controller is equipped with a 42cm (16.54 inch) temperature probe. This probe continuously senses the surrounding temperature and sends real-time data to the controller, which is then shown on the digital display. The extended cable length provides flexibility in sensor placement, allowing users to position the probe closer to heat-sensitive components or areas where precise temperature monitoring is needed. Temperature probe parameters: NTC10KB = 3590
- Note: This controller only controls the fan speed adjustment controlled by a 4-wire PWM signal. The signal specification is 25KHZ 5V. It cannot control the speed regulation of 2-3 wire fans. The working voltage must be equal to the fan voltage.
Test whether the new curve worked
Use the same game or workload before and after the change. A repeatable comparison is more useful than briefly setting the fans to 100%.
- Start with the saved default profile.
- Run the same demanding game or workload for 10–15 minutes.
- Record GPU core temperature, hotspot temperature if available, memory temperature if available, fan percentage, fan RPM, GPU clock behavior, FPS or frame-time consistency, and noise.
- Apply the custom curve.
- Repeat the workload under similar room and case conditions.
- Compare temperature, clock stability, frame times, noise, and fan behavior.
A successful curve should cool the card without fan oscillation, sudden 0-to-100% behavior, rattling at a particular speed, excessive noise, or persistent high hotspot or memory temperatures. MSI also recommends testing with a demanding game or benchmark while monitoring the result; its monitoring guidance explains how to observe GPU behavior.

Zero RPM is still enabled
Disable Zero RPM in the vendor utility if you want the fans to run at idle, or create a curve that commands a nonzero speed. The exact activation threshold is card-specific.
The card rejects a low speed
Some newer NVIDIA cards reject manually requested speeds below 30% while still supporting 0 RPM in automatic mode. Fan Control’s NVIDIA 30% and 0 RPM documentation recommends returning the curve to automatic mode at 0% instead of requesting a value between 1% and 29%. Do not use 10% as a universal minimum.
Another utility is taking control
Use one active GPU fan controller. Afterburner, Adrenalin, Fan Control, motherboard software, and GPU-vendor utilities can fight over the same control channel, causing settings to revert, fans to jump between curves, startup races, incorrect readings, or driver crashes. Close other tuning utilities while testing.
The GPU is in a laptop
Laptop firmware frequently controls cooling independently of Windows. Try the model’s supported utility, such as Armoury Crate or G-Helper on compatible ASUS systems, Lenovo Vantage on compatible Lenovo systems, or the relevant Alienware, OMEN, or MSI software. These are examples, not guarantees; the laptop manufacturer’s model-specific support page is authoritative.

The curve resets after reboot
Confirm that the profile was saved, enable the utility’s startup option only after testing, and check whether Windows security or another tuning program prevents the utility from starting. If the setting still resets, use the vendor utility or leave the card on its default hardware-controlled curve.
The fan spins but makes a bad noise
Rattling or grinding at one speed can indicate a worn bearing, vibration, or a fan touching a cable. Lowering that portion of the curve may reduce the noise temporarily, but a custom curve will not repair a failing fan.
When faster fans are not the real solution
A permanently aggressive curve can hide a cooling problem rather than solve it. If temperatures remain unusually high, inspect the case and card for:
- Dust blocking the heatsink or filters
- Blocked intake or exhaust fans
- High room or ambient temperature
- Insufficient case airflow
- A disconnected, seized, or failing GPU fan
- Poor heatsink contact, dried thermal compound, or degraded thermal pads
- An unusually high power limit
- Sensor, VBIOS, or fan-controller faults
If the GPU becomes very hot during a known heavy load while the fans remain at 0 RPM, check whether the software reports a nonzero fan command and whether the blades physically move. Restore defaults and stop the workload if temperatures continue rising. Persistent problems need hardware diagnosis or professional repair, not a permanent 100% fan command.
Restoring the default fan curve
- Open the utility that controls the GPU.
- Select the default or reset profile.
- Apply the change.
- Disable Start with Windows or automatic startup if you no longer want the custom curve.
- Close or uninstall the conflicting utility if another program is controlling the card.
Software fan curves normally apply only while the controlling utility or its startup profile is active. Resetting the profile and disabling startup loading returns control to the card’s normal firmware behavior.
Bottom line
Use AMD Adrenalin first for a supported Radeon desktop GPU, MSI Afterburner for most Windows desktop GPUs that need a straightforward custom curve, and Fan Control when you need coordinated whole-system cooling. Test under load, tune gradually, and treat high temperatures with stationary fans, repeated crashes, or persistent noise as possible hardware or airflow faults rather than problems that more fan speed alone can fix.
