The moves were not a single replacement chain. They combined two departures with two distinct hires and coincided with a reorganization intended to place Xbox marketing closer to the businesses it supports.

The four Microsoft marketing moves

The changes were reported on June 26, 2024. They should be understood as a 2024 personnel story, not a current 2026 Microsoft announcement.

Kathleen Hall was leaving after 16 years
Hall was Microsoft’s chief brand officer and corporate vice president of brand, advertising, and research. Her responsibilities covered broad company marketing and advertising work, including Windows, Xbox, product launches, and major campaigns such as Microsoft’s Super Bowl advertising.

According to GeekWire’s report, Hall said she planned to return to New York and take time off before deciding on her next opportunity. The available reporting describes a voluntary departure; it does not establish that she was fired, pushed out, or immediately replaced.
Hall’s earlier career included senior vice president work at Fidelity and a chief operating officer role at Leonard Monahan. Microsoft’s own June 3, 2024 author page still identified her as chief brand officer shortly before the departure report.
Jerret West left Xbox for Roblox
West was Xbox’s chief marketing officer and a corporate vice president of Microsoft Gaming. Microsoft had publicly identified him in that role at the June 9 Xbox Games Showcase, shortly before news of his departure.

His marketing remit included Xbox consoles, PC, cloud gaming, Game Pass, games, and Xbox brand events. West had previously worked at Microsoft from 2003 to 2011, later held executive roles at Netflix and American Express, and returned to Microsoft in 2019.
West’s next destination was Roblox, where he became chief marketing officer and head of market expansion. His reported final day at Microsoft was June 30, 2024, with a reported Roblox start date of July 1. Roblox’s executive information identifies West with those responsibilities; PRWeek also reported the appointment.
Xbox marketing was reorganized
West’s departure coincided with a structural change inside Microsoft Gaming. As reported by MediaPost, Microsoft planned to move marketing closer to the businesses it supported.

- Game marketing was to sit within the game content and studios division.
- Xbox marketing, led by Chris Lee, was to move into the Xbox organization.
- Xbox marketing was to report to Xbox president Sarah Bond.
Microsoft described the changes as a way to maintain and strengthen its marketing capabilities, rather than as a simple one-for-one replacement for West. The chronology is clear, but the available reporting does not establish that the reorganization caused West’s departure.

Microsoft hired former Google and Amazon Studios leaders
Bryson Gordon returned from Google
Gordon joined Microsoft as corporate vice president of media, partnerships, and agencies after nearly four years at Google. He most recently held a global marketing leadership role for Google Workspace.
Gordon had previously spent 10 years at Microsoft, from 2005 to 2015. His return brought experience from both Microsoft and a major technology competitor, as well as background in enterprise-product marketing. He did not replace Hall: the reported roles and responsibilities were different.

Alyssa Schutter took over event creative
Schutter joined Microsoft as general manager of event creative. She had been head of events at Amazon Studios and previously held leadership roles at MGM Studios.
Her appointment underscored the importance of event production in Microsoft’s marketing mix, which includes product launches, Xbox showcases, advertising events, and other high-profile brand experiences. Her reported title was general manager of event creative; describing her more broadly as Microsoft’s events chief would overstate the available evidence.

Analysis: The four moves pointed to two parallel priorities. Microsoft was refreshing senior marketing leadership with people who had experience across technology, entertainment, and media, while Xbox was aligning marketing more closely with its separate product and content businesses.
Gordon’s hiring suggested that Microsoft valued experience spanning its own organization and Google. Schutter’s background added Amazon Studios and MGM event expertise. West’s move also illustrated the movement of senior marketing talent among large technology, gaming, and entertainment companies.
None of those facts, by themselves, proves a crisis, turnaround, or strategic failure at Xbox. Nor is there evidence that Gordon and Schutter jointly took over all Microsoft marketing. Hall, West, Gordon, and Schutter held different roles, and their moves should be treated as separate personnel changes linked by a broader organizational reshuffle.
Timeline
- June 3, 2024: Microsoft’s blog listed Hall as chief brand officer.
- June 9, 2024: Xbox identified West as its CMO at the Xbox Games Showcase.
- June 17–18, 2024: Reports emerged that West would join Roblox.
- June 26, 2024: Hall’s departure and the Gordon and Schutter appointments were reported.
- June 30, 2024: West’s reported final day at Microsoft.
- July 1, 2024: West’s reported start date at Roblox.
Do not confuse this with the 2026 Xbox leadership transition
Microsoft announced a separate, much later Xbox leadership change on February 20, 2026, when Phil Spencer retired and Asha Sharma was named CEO of Microsoft Gaming. Sarah Bond’s departure was part of that later transition. Those events were not part of the June 2024 marketing reshuffle and should not be used to imply that Microsoft’s intentions in 2024 were known in advance.
