Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallTo speedrun Minecraft, choose a legal category, learn the basic route, and practice the Nether segments that decide most attempts. A beginner route is: gather wood, food and iron; build a lava-pool portal; obtain gold, blaze rods and Ender pearls in the Nether; locate the stronghold; then defeat the Ender Dragon. Start on a set seed to repeat mechanics, then move to random seeds when you can adapt to unfamiliar terrain.

Choose your category before you practice
Your category determines what you may do, what counts as a valid run, and what kind of skill you are training. Minecraft’s official speedrunning overview distinguishes two useful starting points:

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Category | World generation | Main skill | Best use for a beginner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Random seed | A new seed is generated for each attempt. | Adapting quickly to terrain, structures, resources and travel problems. | Use after you understand the route and can make decisions without a memorized map. |
| Set seed | The same selected seed is used repeatedly. | Consistent execution, movement, structure routing and timing. | Use as a training laboratory for portal building, bastions, fortresses and the End. |
Minecraft.net quotes Geosquare explaining that “Seeds are numbers that Minecraft uses to reliably generate a world.” A set seed lets you rehearse the same terrain and structures; a random seed tests whether you can build a route from whatever the game generates. Learning on a set seed and later entering random-seed attempts is sensible, but a leaderboard submission must follow the live category rules on Speedrun.com.
Decide the edition, version, glitchless or glitched ruleset, and timing category before investing in practice. Rules and allowed tools can change. Read the current rules and submission requirements for the exact category you intend to enter rather than relying on an old video or guide.

The beginner route in one view
| Phase | Primary objective | What you need to leave with | Typical failure |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overworld opening | Collect basic materials and identify a portal route. | Wood, cobblestone tools, food, iron, water and flint-and-steel materials. | Spending too long mining or traveling before checking for lava. |
| Portal construction | Use surface lava and water to enter the Nether quickly. | A lit portal with enough food and basic blocks. | Missing water placements or entering with no escape blocks. |
| Bastion | Acquire gold and barter with piglins. | Obsidian, Ender pearls and other useful trades, depending on luck. | Getting lost, angering piglins or taking an unsafe fight. |
| Fortress | Collect blaze rods. | Enough rods to craft blaze powder for Eyes of Ender. | Searching too long or dying while fighting blazes. |
| Stronghold | Locate and reach the portal room. | An activated End portal and a controlled inventory. | Misreading turns and losing time in corridors. |
| End | Kill the Ender Dragon with a legal method for the category. | A completed run and usable recording evidence. | Missing the perch, misusing beds or running out of healing resources. |
Set up an attempt and know when to reset
A speedrun is an economy of actions. Every block mined, item crafted and detour should serve the next checkpoint. At the start of each world, scan for a workable combination of food, iron, lava and a practical path. If the opening does not offer those pieces without a long expedition, resetting is usually more valuable than trying to rescue a poor spawn.
Opening checklist
- Break enough wood for a crafting table, sticks and the first tools.
- Collect cobblestone for a pickaxe, axe and furnace. Do not mine a large stockpile; take only what supports the route.
- Secure food before entering dangerous terrain. Running out of hunger during a structure fight can end an otherwise good attempt.
- Look for iron. A bucket is the key tool for a surface-lava portal, and additional iron can provide basic utility items.
- Gather flint or another legal way to obtain flint-and-steel materials, then locate a lava pool near water.
Armor, diamonds and extra resources can increase survival odds, but they also cost time. Early runs should favor a repeatable minimum inventory over a heavily equipped expedition. Add safety resources only when your deaths show that a specific item would have prevented them.
Build the fastest reliable Overworld portal
The standard beginner technique uses a water bucket to shape a portal from a surface lava pool instead of mining obsidian. Practice the placement sequence until you can create a frame without stopping to reason through every block.
Portal-building drill
- Place water so that it controls the lava without washing away the pool you still need.
- Use a temporary block to form the frame’s corners and place lava against the water to convert each required position into obsidian.
- Keep the bucket filled whenever possible. A missed placement is recoverable only if you still have water and enough lava.
- Light the completed frame, check that you have food and blocks, and enter immediately rather than gathering optional materials.
Record this drill separately in practice. The goal is not a theoretical best time; it is to perform the same sequence under pressure and recover from one misplaced water or lava block without panicking.
Why the Nether decides most beginner runs
The Nether combines dangerous movement, hostile mobs, uncertain structure locations and a route that changes with each seed. The central 1.16-and-later route uses two structures for different resources: a bastion for gold and piglin bartering, and a fortress for blaze rods.
Route a bastion for gold and trades
Gold lets you barter with piglins. Depending on the trades you receive, bartering can supply Ender pearls, obsidian and other items that shorten the route to the stronghold. Learn the layout of each bastion type rather than memorizing one ideal room.
Recommended Free Tools
- Enter with enough blocks to create walls, floors and emergency exits.
- Protect yourself from drops and lava before opening a chest or mining gold.
- Use gold armor or the category’s accepted equivalent when required to avoid unnecessary piglin aggression; verify the current rules and your version’s mechanics.
- Separate ordinary piglins from brutes. A brute is a high-priority threat that cannot be managed like a normal barter interaction.
- Leave when the structure is poor. A dangerous search for one more trade can erase the time saved by a good opening.
Your practice target is a safe, repeatable path to gold and a controlled barter area, not a single lucky trade sequence. Track what caused each death: a fall, a brute, lava, a missed block or an inventory mistake. Drill that failure specifically.
Find a fortress and collect blaze rods
The fortress supplies blaze rods, which become blaze powder for Eyes of Ender. Fortress work is both combat and navigation: you must reach a spawner, fight efficiently, collect enough rods and return without getting trapped.
- Build cover against blaze fireballs and use corners to break line of sight.
- Keep a clear exit route while fighting. A spawner room is not useful if you cannot leave it alive.
- Gather only the rods needed for your planned Eye count plus a margin that your category and route justify.
- Mark or remember your portal direction so that a successful fortress split does not become a blind search for home.
Practice entering a fortress, securing rods and exiting under pressure. The MCSR.info 1.16.1 Random Seed Glitchless route treats bastion, fortress, blind travel, stronghold navigation and the End fight as distinct skills because a runner can be fast at one and unreliable at another.
Convert Nether resources into a stronghold route
Once you have blaze powder and enough pearls, craft Eyes of Ender and leave the Nether using your planned portal route. In the Overworld, throw an eye to establish direction, travel far enough to create a useful second reading, and use the change in direction to triangulate the stronghold. Do not throw eyes repeatedly while standing in nearly the same place; that gives little new information and consumes scarce items.
Stronghold navigation
The stronghold is a maze of corridors, staircases and dead ends. Enter with a simple navigation rule: maintain awareness of the last junction, choose one branch, and reverse deliberately when it fails. Blindly sprinting through every doorway creates loops and makes a good Nether split worthless.
- Keep the portal-room search separate from general exploration; you are looking for the silverfish spawner and End portal frame, not every room.
- Use blocks or torches as temporary markers only if they do not slow you more than they save later.
- When a corridor dead-ends, return to the last decision point instead of digging randomly through several walls.
- Before activating the portal, arrange your hotbar so weapons, blocks, food and the chosen dragon-kill tool are immediately available.
Finish with a repeatable End fight
The End fight is its own route segment. Learn the dragon’s perch behavior and one legal kill method for your chosen category. Many runners practice beds, but the acceptable technique depends on the ruleset and version; use only methods permitted by the current leaderboard rules.

End-fight preparation
- Carry enough blocks to reach safe positions and protect yourself from the void.
- Keep food and a weapon accessible without opening the inventory during a dangerous moment.
- Know where you will stand when the dragon lands and where you will retreat if the timing is wrong.
- Practice the sequence until a missed perch or failed bed placement has a recovery plan rather than causing an automatic death.
A fast dragon kill is useful only when it is repeatable. During early attempts, choose the method that produces completed fights, then optimize its timing as your survival rate improves.
Practice in segments before attempting full runs
Full attempts are emotionally exciting but inefficient for learning. MCSR.info and Speedrun.com’s guide ecosystem separate the route into drills for a reason: a runner can isolate one decision, repeat it many times and identify the exact failure point.
1. Portal construction
Spawn near a lava pool in a practice world and build the frame repeatedly. Vary the pool shape and practice recovering from one misplaced water source. Success means you can light a portal without hesitation while preserving the bucket and enough blocks.
2. Bastion routing
Use a set seed or practice world that exposes each bastion type. Rehearse the safest path to gold, the barter setup and the exit. Then repeat with deliberately imperfect entrances so you learn to improvise instead of memorizing one staircase.
3. Fortress fighting
Practice finding a spawner, taking cover, collecting rods and leaving. Concentrate on blaze-fire timing, block placement and inventory control. A drill is complete when you can survive a bad spawn or a second wave without losing the route.
4. Blind travel and triangulation
Practice leaving a Nether portal, taking two useful eye readings and reaching the stronghold without wasting throws. Repeat stronghold entries until you can identify the portal-room search pattern and reverse from dead ends.

5. The End fight
Load the End directly and repeat your legal kill method. Practice the dragon’s perch, the camera angle, bed or weapon placement, and recovery after a miss. Measure consistency by completed kills, not by your fastest successful attempt.
6. Full attempts
Combine the segments only after each one is familiar. During a full run, note the timestamp and cause whenever you die or abandon the attempt. Afterward, return to that segment rather than immediately starting another unfocused run.
Random seed or set seed: a practical decision framework
| Question | Choose set seed when… | Choose random seed when… |
|---|---|---|
| Do you need repeatability? | You want the same terrain and structures for mechanical practice. | You are comfortable rebuilding a route every attempt. |
| What causes most failures? | Movement, portal construction or structure execution. | Decision-making under uncertainty and route selection. |
| How often will you reset? | You are testing one segment and can restart instantly. | You accept many resets for poor openings while searching for a workable world. |
| How useful is memorization? | Specific paths and timings can be rehearsed. | General structure knowledge matters more than memorizing coordinates. |
| What is the next step? | Move to random seeds once execution is stable. | Return to set-seed drills when a particular mechanic repeatedly fails. |
Neither category is universally easier. Set seed reduces uncertainty but exposes execution mistakes; random seed rewards adaptation but has a wider range of openings and route problems. Your category choice should match the skill you are trying to improve.

The fastest theoretical route is not automatically the fastest route for a beginner. Compare a risky shortcut with a safer option using four questions:
- How much time does the shortcut save if it works?
- How often does it cause death or force a reset?
- Does it remove resources you need for the next structure?
- Can you repeat it when the terrain is slightly different?
For example, mining extra iron may feel slow, but one additional safety item can be worthwhile if your current Nether deaths come from a predictable equipment gap. Conversely, collecting armor by default is wasted time if your deaths are caused by poor bastion navigation. Change one variable at a time so you know whether an adjustment helped.
Rules, timing and submitting a run
Before submitting, open the current Minecraft rules and leaderboard page on Speedrun.com for your exact version and category. Confirm:
Best Value
- Whether the category is random seed, set seed, glitchless or another ruleset.
- Which game edition and version are accepted.
- What external tools, modifications or settings are allowed.
- How timing starts and ends, including any load-time convention.
- What video, world-seed or other evidence the moderators require.
Do not use an old record video as your rulebook. Categories evolve, and a technique accepted in one version may be disallowed or behave differently in another. Speedrun.com’s guide index provides setup, bastion, fortress, End-fight and beginner resources, but the live rules page has priority.
Minecraft.net reported a historical Random Seed completion of 9 minutes 52 seconds in an article published in 2018. Treat that figure as historical context, not a current record or a beginner target. No authoritative beginner-average completion time is established; current records and standings are volatile and belong on the live leaderboard.
Troubleshoot the most common failed attempts
You cannot find iron or a usable lava pool
Search briefly while collecting food and wood, then reset if the route requires a long detour. A run that spends its opening minutes wandering for basic portal materials is unlikely to recover its time.
The bastion is dangerous or gives poor trades
Secure an exit, take the resources you can obtain safely and leave. Do not turn one bad structure into a prolonged fight. In practice, repeat that bastion type until you know a safe fallback path.
The fortress has no convenient spawner
Use the structure’s corridors and bridges to search methodically, keeping your portal direction in mind. If the search becomes a maze, prioritize survival and record the navigation mistake for a later drill.

You run out of pearls
Review your barter setup and trade decisions rather than simply adding more gold every run. Practice creating a controlled piglin area and leaving enough inventory space to collect the useful drops.
You get lost in the stronghold
Stop sprinting, identify the last junction and retrace your route. Add a navigation drill to your practice schedule; random digging usually compounds the error.
The dragon fight fails at the final moment
Repeat the End segment alone until the kill method works after a missed perch or imperfect placement. Then combine it with stronghold practice before returning to complete attempts.
A simple progression for your first month
- Learn the mechanics: Spend the first sessions on a set seed, portal construction, basic movement, bastion safety and fortress combat.
- Stabilize the Nether: Repeat bastion and fortress drills until you can leave both structures alive more often than not.
- Add the finish: Practice stronghold navigation, blind travel and the End fight as separate checkpoints.
- Run complete attempts: Start random-seed runs, reset poor openings quickly and write down the exact cause of every failed attempt.
- Optimize one bottleneck: Return to the segment responsible for most lost time or deaths, then test the change in full runs.
This progression builds the skill speedrunning actually measures: making a legal plan, executing it under pressure and changing that plan when the generated world refuses to cooperate.
