Move through one local area at a time, investigate its points of interest, accept side activities that fit your current level and mood, gather materials, prepare for fights, and stop for Gwent whenever the opportunity appears. Return to the main story when you have finished what you wanted from that area—not when a guide tells you that a particular quest order is “optimal.”
Before you start, confirm which edition is installed on your platform. The current official product page uses the name The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered and says that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included. Storefront names and upgrade histories can differ, so verify your own library listing rather than relying on a retailer description or an old menu screenshot.

Confirm the edition before creating your save
Edition confusion is the one preparation problem worth solving before the opening cinematic. The current official listing describes The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered as including both major expansions. Its FAQ also explains that digital storefronts replace the original base-game listing with the Complete Edition in some ownership situations, while installation and expansion access still depend on your platform and update status.
An official announcement dated 29 September 2026 says the Remastered version is available as a free upgrade for existing owners on GOG, Steam, the Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. That does not mean every regional storefront displays the same label or that every account has the same entitlement. Check the product page in your own platform library, install pending updates, and look for the expansion entries before beginning.

| What to verify | Why it matters for this playthrough |
|---|---|
| Storefront title and ownership | Your platform may show Remastered, Complete Edition, or a legacy listing. The name alone is not proof that the expansions are installed. |
| Expansion installation | The official edition includes Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, but your platform may require separate downloads or updates. |
| Upgrade eligibility | The 29 September 2026 announcement covers specified platforms and existing owners; regional account status can still affect what you see. |
| Campaign entry point | Choose the regular base-game campaign for a first full-world run. Standalone expansion starts are possible, but they are a different way to enter the game. |
If the expansion tiles are absent, do not assume your save is damaged. Recheck the platform’s add-on manager, account that owns the game, installed version, and available updates. Start the campaign only after you know whether you are playing the base game alone or the Complete/Remastered package.
Use a flexible area-by-area routine
No official source establishes a universally best quest order, Gwent opponent sequence, crafting route, or skill build. The following routine is therefore a playstyle framework, not a tested speedrun or an objectively superior route. It keeps optional systems visible without turning every session into a completionist audit.
- Choose a local anchor. Continue the next main-story objective or select a nearby settlement, road, contract, or unexplored region as your short-term focus.
- Survey the immediate area. Look for visible points of interest, people with side activities, merchants, and places where you can learn more about the local situation.
- Take only the side content you want to finish now. Accepting everything at once can bury the reason you entered an area. Keep a small active set and leave the rest for a later visit.
- Collect materials as you move. Pick up useful objects encountered naturally, inspect merchants, and check crafting interfaces when your inventory changes.
- Prepare before a meaningful fight. Review your available elixirs, blade oils, equipment, and swords rather than treating preparation as a menu chore at the end of a session.
- Play Gwent when it fits the stop. A merchant, traveler, or other opponent can become part of the area’s story instead of a separate card-game marathon.
- Return to the main story when the area feels complete enough. Leave unfinished markers if continuing would make the session feel like work; you can come back when the narrative or your build gives you a reason.
This rhythm creates a repeatable loop: discover, investigate, gather, prepare, play, and then decide whether to advance. It also gives you a natural stopping point after each local cluster of activities.

Explore with a question, not a demand to clear everything
The official description presents the Continent as an open world across the Northern Kingdoms, filled with encounters and choices that have consequences. That supports a curious, local approach: enter an area because you want to understand it, find a person, follow a rumor, or see what lies beyond a road—not merely because an icon is visible.
Before leaving a settlement, ask what you are trying to learn or accomplish. You might be looking for a new lead, a merchant to inspect, a side story, or materials for an item you already intend to make. If the answer is “nothing in particular,” follow the main objective for a while instead of forcing a sweep.
Separate discovery from completion
Exploration is more enjoyable when discovery and completion are different goals. A first pass can involve roads, buildings, conversations, and obvious activities. A later pass can handle remaining markers after you understand why the location matters. This prevents a large map from turning the opening hours into an inventory-management exercise.

Use merchants and interfaces as landmarks
Merchants are useful reference points even when you are not shopping. Revisit them after gathering materials, inspect what the crafting interfaces now permit, and use settlements as places to reorganize before heading back into the wilderness. The exact items, recipes, and stock vary by game state, so treat the interface as the authority for your current save rather than relying on a fixed list.
Let consequences influence your pace
CD PROJEKT RED describes the world as one where “The morally ambiguous world of the Continent is full of delightful and dreadful encounters with complex choices and consequences.” That wording is a reason to slow down for conversations and decisions that interest you. A consequence-focused playthrough does not require completing every optional task; it requires giving important choices enough attention that you remember why you made them.
Turn crafting and preparation into a routine
Gather deliberately while you travel
Do not postpone every material decision until you reach a crafting screen. As you explore, collect resources that are easy to take without breaking the flow, then periodically check what you can make. This keeps crafting connected to the places you visit and shows whether a detour is useful for your current goals.
The available evidence does not establish a universal ingredient route, a complete recipe list, or a best early item. Avoid planning your entire campaign around a component map copied from another version or platform. Instead, use the recipes and requirements displayed in your own game, and decide whether obtaining an item is worth changing your route.
Prepare for encounters instead of reacting after defeat
The official product description frames preparation as part of Geralt’s identity: “A witcher always comes prepared.” It specifically names elixirs, blade oils, and Geralt’s silver and steel swords. Use that broad principle without assuming that every enemy requires a particular consumable or that one recipe solves every encounter.

- After a difficult fight, change one preparation choice at a time so you can tell what helped.
Use the two-sword distinction as a reminder
The official description’s reference to silver and steel swords is useful even without prescribing a matchup chart: your preparation should include checking which weapon you plan to use, not just which armor you are wearing. The source does not provide enemy-by-enemy prescriptions, damage figures, or a complete counter table, so let the game’s own prompts and your experience determine the choice.

Keep crafting subordinate to your playstyle
A crafting-focused run can become counterproductive if every activity is judged only by whether it supplies a future recipe. Choose a simple rule: gather naturally during exploration, make items when they solve a current problem or support a preferred style, and postpone expensive detours until you have a clear reason to take them. That preserves time for Gwent and story content while still making crafting meaningful.
Build Gwent into the journey
Make each game a local stop
The official product page calls Gwent an iconic card game from The Witcher 3. For a Gwent-focused playthrough, treat matches as part of the social geography of the world. When you meet a suitable opponent or finish business with a merchant, decide whether a game fits the moment. This makes Gwent a recurring habit rather than a block of optional content you postpone until the end.
- Enter a settlement or encounter where a game is available.
- Finish the conversation or transaction that explains why you are there.
- Play if you have the time and attention; otherwise mark the opportunity mentally and continue.
- After the match, return to the area’s main question before opening another unrelated activity.
This approach keeps the card game connected to exploration. It also avoids the false pressure to defeat every opponent in a single visit.

Do not confuse the video game with the tabletop product
| Version | What it is | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| Gwent inside The Witcher 3 | An in-world activity encountered during the video-game campaign. | You do not need a physical product to play it. Use the cards and rules provided by the game. |
| Gwent: The Legendary Card Game | An optional physical printing of Gwent. | The official description names Northern Realms, Nilfgaard, Monsters, Scoia’tael, and Skellige decks. It is a separate tabletop purchase, not a requirement for the video game. |
If you want a physical companion, treat it as a separate hobby. Do not expect a tabletop deck to unlock cards, change your save, or substitute for learning the in-game activity.
Set a Gwent priority that matches your patience
There is no substantiated “best early deck” or verified opponent order in the available official material. Choose your own stopping rule: one match per settlement, one short session after a story beat, or Gwent whenever you meet an interesting character. If a match stops being fun, return to the story without treating that decision as failure.
Choose progression by feel, not by a fixed build order
The official page describes an overhauled skill tree designed to offer flexibility and a greater impact on play style. That supports experimentation, but it does not establish an exact sequence of upgrades. A new save should therefore begin with a preference rather than a rigid build guide.

| Preference | How to play it | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Combat-forward | Spend more time testing attacks and defensive options, using exploration to find fights that teach you something. | You may leave some crafting and Gwent opportunities for later sessions. |
| Preparation-forward | Use each area to gather, inspect crafting requirements, and adjust equipment before taking on harder activities. | Travel and inventory checks take more of the session. |
| Explorer-generalist | Keep upgrades and activities broad so that side stories, materials, combat, and Gwent can all share the same route. | Progression may feel less specialized because you are supporting several interests. |
| Gwent-and-story | Use exploration mainly to find characters, conversations, and opportunities for matches, returning to the main plot frequently. | Some resource-heavy detours may wait until a later chapter. |
Reassess after a few sessions. If you enjoy collecting but rarely use what you collect, shift toward making and testing items. If preparation has become a barrier to every fight, simplify it. The flexible skill system is valuable precisely because your preferred balance can change.
How to pace side activities with the main story
Use story beats as reset points
After a major main-story development, pause before accepting a new chain of unrelated tasks. Visit a nearby settlement, review your current equipment and materials, and decide whether the next session should be exploratory or narrative. This gives the main plot room to breathe without abandoning optional systems.
Finish short local threads before starting distant ones
When several objectives are available, favor activities that share a region or route. You spend less time crossing the map and more time understanding one place. This is a convenience rule, not a claim that distant quests are inferior or that a particular sequence is canonically correct.
Leave deliberate gaps
An exploration playthrough does not need a cleared map. Leaving a question unanswered can be useful: you may return with better equipment, a different mood, or new context from the story. Record a brief note about why you postponed something if you are worried you will forget it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle the expansions without derailing a fresh campaign
The current official edition page says that Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are included with Remastered. Inclusion does not create a required starting order. The available official information supports access and ownership context, not a tested recommendation to begin either expansion at a particular point in the base story.
For the playthrough described here, start with the regular base-game campaign and let the world establish its characters, regions, and optional routines first. When an expansion becomes available in your installation, treat it as additional content rather than an obligation to leave the current regional loop immediately. If your platform offers a standalone expansion start, remember that it is a separate entry point intended for players who are not beginning a complete base-game run.

Sample session formats
Use the session length you actually have. The goal is consistency, not a prescribed number of hours.
Short session
- Choose one nearby objective.
- Explore the route to it and collect naturally encountered materials.
- Complete one side activity or one Gwent match.
- Check preparation and save before stopping.
Standard session
- Advance one main-story step.
- Investigate the surrounding settlement or region.
- Visit a merchant or crafting interface.
- Take on a small cluster of related side activities.
- Play Gwent if an opportunity appears.
- Return to a safe landmark and decide whether the next session continues locally or follows the main story.
Long session
- Set a regional objective before you begin.
- Work through several connected activities while maintaining your material and equipment checks.
- Reserve time for a few Gwent matches instead of treating them as interruptions.
- Stop at a natural narrative break rather than pushing into a new region simply because the map still contains markers.
Common problems and practical fixes
“My edition does not show the expansions.”
Check the platform library, add-on manager, account ownership, installed updates, and regional listing. The official FAQ distinguishes storefront replacement and installation status, so the absence of an expansion tile can be an entitlement or installation issue rather than a problem with your save.
“The map is overwhelming.”
Pick one settlement or route as your boundary. Ignore distant markers until you have a reason to travel there. Exploration is serving your playthrough when it creates context, not when it produces the largest possible checklist.

“Crafting feels like busywork.”
Stop collecting for its own sake. Gather during normal travel, inspect requirements only when an item would help your current style, and postpone long material detours. Crafting should support exploration and preparation, not replace them.
“I keep postponing Gwent.”
Attach one match to a routine event, such as visiting a settlement or finishing a merchant conversation. A small recurring habit is more sustainable than promising yourself a full card-game session later.
“I want an exact skill order.”
No exact order is established by the official material used for this guide. Start with the style you enjoy, test it for several sessions, and adjust when your actual play differs from your initial plan.
A practical first-session checklist
- Verify the installed edition and expansion status on your platform.
- Start the regular base-game campaign if your goal is a complete exploration-focused run.
- Choose a nearby local anchor instead of trying to clear the whole map.
- Accept a manageable number of side activities.
- Gather materials naturally and inspect crafting interfaces when you return to a settlement.
- Prepare with the elixirs, blade oils, equipment, and sword choice available to your current character.
- Play Gwent when an in-world opportunity fits the route.
- Choose skill upgrades according to the style you are actually enjoying.
- Return to the main story when the local area has given you enough—not when every marker is gone.
That routine makes Gwent, crafting, and exploration structural parts of the campaign. It leaves room for the Continent’s choices to surprise you, while keeping preparation and optional content close enough to the main story that they never become an afterthought.
