If you care more about fictional chronology, you can begin with Gears of War: E-Day: it is a prequel set 14 years before the original. Neither choice is a publisher-mandated order; they offer different first impressions of the same story world.
Which Gears of War game should you start with?
For a newcomer who wants the series’ original introduction, start with Gears of War: Reloaded. Xbox describes it as a remaster of the original game, with post-launch content that includes a bonus campaign act. It gives you the first game’s story before you see its earlier events in E-Day. Xbox’s Reloaded announcement lists its platforms and release details.

Choose E-Day first if you would rather follow the earliest events in the story. Xbox says it takes place 14 years before the original Gears of War and follows Marcus Fenix and Dominic Santiago during the Locust emergence. Starting there means meeting the characters and setting through a prequel rather than through the game that introduced them to players. That is a storytelling trade-off, not a warning that one order is wrong. Xbox’s E-Day feature describes the premise and chronology.
Should you play in chronological order?
You can, by starting with E-Day, but you do not have to. Chronology answers “what happens first in the fiction?”; starting with Reloaded answers “what was the series’ first story?” For most newcomers who want the series’ intended first introduction, Reloaded is the straightforward starting point. If your main preference is chronological order, begin with E-Day instead.

The official Xbox materials cited here establish the relationship between these two games, not a complete campaign order for every numbered entry and spin-off. This recommendation is limited to the choice between the original’s remaster and its prequel.
