If your PS5 displays a temperature warning, turn it off, let it cool completely, move it into an open location, and clean dust from its accessible vents with a low-powered vacuum. Leave at least 10 cm (about 4 inches) of open space around the console. If the warning or shutdown returns after that, stop using the console and contact PlayStation Support.
A loud fan alone does not prove that a PS5 is overheating. Sony says the fan can become louder during demanding games and applications as it increases cooling performance.

First, check whether the PS5 is actually overheating
These symptoms are usually normal:
- The fan becomes louder during demanding games.
- Warm air leaves the rear vents.
- The console feels warm after extended use.
Take the problem more seriously when you see an on-screen message saying the PS5 is too hot, the console shuts down unexpectedly, or the same overheating behavior happens repeatedly in a cool, open setup. What to do when the PS5 says it is too hot
- Save your game if the console is still responsive.
- Turn off the PS5 normally: press the PS button, select Power, then Turn Off PS5.
- If it is unresponsive, use the power button only as necessary. Do not repeatedly force power cycles.
- After it has shut down, unplug the AC power cable and let the console cool completely.
- Move it to an open, well-ventilated location away from sunlight, heaters, radiators, fireplaces, and other hot equipment.
- Check for blocked vents, dust, carpet, cabinet walls, and objects placed on or around the console.
- Clean the accessible vents with a low-powered vacuum.
- Test the console once in the improved setup. If the warning returns, stop using it and arrange service.
Sony warns that continuing to use the console after an overheating warning can cause damage or malfunction. Do not keep playing simply because the message disappears after a short rest.

Give the PS5 enough room to breathe
Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm (approximately 4 inches) of open space around the console. This is a minimum, not a guarantee that every shelf is safe. Hot air must also be able to escape from the rear; a shelf with adequate side clearance can still trap heat if the back is blocked.
Use an open, hard, stable surface. Avoid:
- Closed entertainment cabinets and narrow compartments.
- Carpet or rugs with long fibers.
- Cloth-covered surfaces or covering the console with cloth.
- Direct sunlight and unusually hot rooms.
- Radiators, heaters, fireplaces, and other heat sources.
- Stacking a receiver, cable box, or other electronics on top of the PS5.
- Positioning the PS5’s exhaust directly against another device’s intake.
Separate heat-producing electronics and make sure cable tension is not pushing the console against a wall.
Room temperature matters
The PS5 manuals cited by Sony specify an operating ambient range of 5°C to 35°C (41°F to 95°F) for the applicable models. This is an operating specification, not a promise that the console will perform identically throughout that range. Air trapped inside a cabinet can be hotter than the room’s thermostat reading, and direct sunlight can create a local hot spot.

Clean PS5 vents safely
For routine maintenance, follow Sony’s basic procedure:
- Exit the game and turn off the PS5 through the Control Center.
- Wait until the power indicator is fully off.
- Unplug the AC power cable and other cables.
- Let the console cool before handling it.
- Use a low-powered or handheld vacuum around the accessible side, top, and rear vents.
- Remove loose dust from the surrounding surface.
- Reconnect the cables only after cleaning is complete.
Sony specifically recommends a low-powered vacuum and disconnecting the AC cable before cleaning. Avoid aggressive high-powered vacuuming, inserting tools into the vents, or treating compressed air as an official Sony recommendation.
Can you remove the PS5 covers?
Yes. Removing the side covers is permitted for tasks such as accessing the fan area, installing an M.2 SSD, attaching a disc drive, or replacing covers. Turn off and unplug the console, then wait for it to cool before removing them. Sony’s cover-removal guide explains the procedure.

Cover removal is optional for ordinary external vent cleaning. Reinstall every cover correctly before powering on; Sony warns that incorrectly installed covers can contribute to overheating. If a cover will not reattach properly, do not force it.

See Sony’s PS5 setup instructions for model-specific installation. Vertical placement is not, by itself, proof of unsafe cooling. The important factors are correct support, stability, clearance, and unobstructed airflow.
Do cooling stands help?
An official vertical stand can secure a compatible console in an upright position, but it is not a cure for overheating. It cannot compensate for a closed cabinet, blocked rear exhaust, a hot room, or internal hardware trouble.

Third-party fan-equipped stands should be treated cautiously. There is no basis to promise that one will lower internal temperatures without credible, model-specific testing. A stand may add noise, use a USB port, complicate cable management, or block airflow. Fix the console’s placement and cleanliness first.
What not to do
- Do not continue playing after a temperature warning.
- Do not run the console in a closed cabinet or on a long-fiber rug.
- Do not cover it with cloth after use.
- Do not open the power supply.
- Do not remove the heatsink or manipulate liquid-metal thermal material as a casual repair.
- Do not repeatedly force shutdowns while the console is hot.
- Do not factory-reset or reinstall system software as an overheating fix. These procedures do not repair a physical cooling problem, and reinstallation can delete console data.
- Do not assume vertical placement alone causes liquid-metal leakage or overheating. Sony supports vertical setup when the correct stand or base is used.
Should you update the PS5?
After correcting airflow and dust, keeping system software current is a reasonable general troubleshooting step. The current path is Settings → System → System Software → System Software Update and Settings. An update will not repair a blocked vent, failed fan, dust buildup, or defective cooling component. Use Sony’s system software guide for update instructions.
When to contact PlayStation Support
Arrange service if the temperature warning returns after relocation and cleaning, the console repeatedly shuts down, or it overheats in a cool, open setup. Seek help promptly for a fan that does not appear to operate normally, a burning smell, visible damage, abnormal noise, or heat severe enough to make handling unsafe.

Start with Sony’s hardware support and repair flow. If the console is within the U.S. or Canada’s one-year warranty period, subject to the warranty terms, use PlayStation Repairs before opening the console or hiring an independent technician. Sony’s warranty terms address proof of purchase, repair authorization, and exclusions involving unauthorized service or opening the product.
Do not remove the heatsink, replace liquid metal, disconnect internal fan wiring, or open the power supply unless you are a qualified repair technician and accept the associated damage and safety risks.
