Max later gets a chance to change the past using a photograph and her rewind ability, but it creates a different timeline with major consequences for Chloe.
Can you stop William from leaving in the original Life Is Strange?
No ordinary response in the scene permanently prevents William from leaving. The conversation continues into a cutscene, and the story moves forward with his departure. The Chloe’s House walkthrough describes the scene and notes that the choice has later consequences; it does not establish a dialogue answer that keeps William from leaving.

That fits the game’s broader choice system: decisions and dialogue affect relationships and how the story develops. Feral Interactive’s official Before the Storm manual describes that system, but it does not mean every major event can be avoided through conversation.
What can Max change later?
Later, Max can use a photograph to travel back and alter the past. This is a story-level intervention, not another answer in William’s conversation. Changing the past leads to a different timeline and carries major consequences for Chloe.
#1 Best Overall
- The box set comprises a disc with LIFE IS STRANGE: TRUE COLORS and LIFE IS STRANGE: DOUBLE EXPOSURE, alongside a redemption code granting entitlement to LIFE IS STRANGE REMASTERED, LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM REMASTERED, LIFE IS STRANGE 2, and all associated DLC and pre-order incentive items.
- Supernatural powers collide with everyday life, and every choice you make has consequences.
- LIFE IS STRANGE is a single-player narrative adventure series that focuses on heartfelt, grounded stories with a twist of the strange, and a franchise that has won over 100 awards since its inception - including from The Peabody Awards, BAFTA, and GLAAD.
- Over five cinematic, emotional adventures, you’ll Rewind Time as Max Caulfield and uncover the secrets of Arcadia Bay with Chloe Price, take a road trip with Sean Diaz and his telekinetic brother Daniel, find a new home with psychic empath Alex Chen, and return to Max to solve a murder across two timelines.
The manual describes checkpoints and replaying episodes, which let players revisit gameplay choices. Replaying does not establish that William’s departure can be permanently avoided in the original scene.

Farewell is a bonus episode for Life Is Strange: Before the Storm, focused on Max and Chloe as children. It is separate from the original game’s scene in which William leaves. Square Enix identifies Farewell as a bonus episode on its Before the Storm store page; Steam’s Farewell listing says the base game is required.
