If you’re updating a first-generation USB-C Backbone One because it does not work with iPhone 15, Backbone documents a separate one-time update using the app on an Android phone.

Backbone recommends the app for keeping controller firmware current. Its FAQ does not establish one universal menu path for every controller, phone, or app version, so use the update instructions shown for your connected device.
Do you need Backbone+?
No. Backbone says a subscription is not required to play games with the controller. The app is free, and its firmware update feature does not require Backbone+.

Fix the first-generation USB-C controller issue with iPhone 15
This is a specific compatibility procedure, not the general update method for every Backbone controller. Backbone’s support instructions for some first-generation USB-C Backbone One controllers say to update through the Backbone App on an Android phone:

Install the Backbone App on an Android phone and connect the controller to it. Backbone says the Android phone only needs to be used once; it may be borrowed, and no sign-in is needed.

Run the firmware update offered in the app.

Check the firmware entry in the app, then restart the iPhone.
Backbone’s Portuguese support page gives firmware 1.2.2 or later as the threshold for universal compatibility. Because firmware and app details may change, check the current firmware state shown in the app rather than relying only on that number.

Check which generation you have
Backbone says you can identify the controller generation from its packaging or the controller information in the app. Its localized support article lists BB-51-P-B and BB-51-P-W as second-generation model numbers and says second-generation controllers are ready for other iOS devices.

For the specific first-generation USB-C compatibility issue, Backbone says to use its support form to request a return label and a replacement controller with firmware installed. This is the remedy described for that case, not a general replacement policy for all update problems.
