Apache does not automatically cause MySQL to crash. It can increase concurrent requests and total memory, disk, and file-descriptor demand, but the fix depends on what actually killed mysqld. Confirm that the database process is dying, then match the error log and host evidence to one of five failure classes: memory pressure, disk or quota exhaustion, InnoDB files or permissions, service limits, or a reproducible query.

Start by proving what failed
A web page that returns a database error does not prove that MySQL crashed. The client, Apache worker, network connection, service manager, or the database server itself may have failed. Oracle’s MySQL troubleshooting guidance recommends finding the exact failure boundary before changing settings.

- Run
mysqladmin versionwhile the service is healthy and record the reported server uptime. - When the incident occurs, run the same command again. A reset uptime indicates that the server restarted; an unchanged uptime points toward an application, connection, or Apache-side failure instead.
- Check the MySQL error log for the timestamp, fatal message, shutdown reason, and any stack trace. Use the log path configured by your package rather than assuming every distribution stores it in the same directory.
- Check the service manager’s status and journal for the same minute. On a systemd host, substitute the unit actually installed on your machine:
sudo systemctl status mysqld
sudo journalctl -u mysqld --since "2026-10-15 12:00" --until "2026-10-15 12:10"
Some distributions call the unit mysql instead of mysqld. Replace the unit name in every command. A restart loop, an exit code, or a signal recorded by systemd is useful evidence, but the MySQL error log remains the place to look for database-level causes.
Correlate the crash with host pressure
Collect host evidence for the exact crash window. MySQL’s own troubleshooting pages specifically identify memory and disk subsystems as primary crash-investigation targets.

Memory and swap
Look for kernel out-of-memory (OOM) messages and compare them with RAM and swap usage. An OOM killer can terminate either Apache or mysqld; the process named in the kernel log is the one that was killed, not necessarily the process that consumed the most memory.
free -h
swapon --show
dmesg -T | grep -i -E 'out of memory|oom|killed process'
Capture these values during representative web traffic, not only when the site is idle. Apache’s workers and MySQL’s buffers draw from the same host-wide pool. A server can appear healthy at rest and fail only when concurrent requests make both services expand at once.
Disk space, inodes, and quotas
A full filesystem can prevent MySQL from writing data, temporary tables, binary logs, redo information, or its own error log. A filesystem with free bytes can still be unable to create files when its inode count or user quota is exhausted.
df -h
df -i
quota -s
Check every filesystem used by the data directory, redo or log files, temporary directory, and error log. The MySQL manual’s InnoDB guidance is explicit: make sure the disk is not full and that no disk quota is being exceeded. Record ownership and permissions as well, because an access denial can look like a storage failure during startup.
Open-file limits
High Apache concurrency can increase the number of sockets and files that the host must keep open. If the error log or journal reports “too many open files,” inspect the effective limit of the running service rather than only the shell limit of your login session.
pid=$(pidof mysqld)
cat /proc/$pid/limits | grep -i 'open files'
Compare the limit with the number of active connections, table files, sockets, and log files observed at the incident. Raise a limit only when the evidence shows descriptor exhaustion; increasing it will not repair an OOM, full disk, or damaged InnoDB file.

Check InnoDB files, directories, and option-file selection
InnoDB can stop startup or terminate with a fatal error when its files are missing, unwritable, inconsistent, or constrained by a configured hard size limit. Verify all of the following before attempting recovery:
- The configured data directory and log directories exist on the mounted filesystems you expect.
- The account running
mysqldcan read and write those directories and files. - The server is loading the option file you edited. Package defaults, command-line arguments, and included configuration files can override a setting in another file.
- The filesystem has free bytes, free inodes, and sufficient quota.
- The configured
innodb_data_file_pathlimits have not been reached. A hard limit can produce a fatal error even when the volume still has unused space.
Confirm the effective configuration from the startup log and your distribution’s service definition. Do not assume that a setting is active merely because it appears in a file under /etc/mysql or another configuration directory.
Distinguish ordinary startup failure from InnoDB recovery
After an unclean shutdown, InnoDB may perform crash recovery. A server that appears stuck during this phase needs recovery-specific handling, not ordinary tuning. Read the error log for recovery progress and the exact point at which startup stops.
Never delete ibdata, redo-log, or .ibd files as a generic “reset.” Those files contain database state. The MySQL I/O guidance limits deletion to narrowly defined initialization failures; applying it to a recovery or runtime incident can destroy the only copy of data needed for recovery.

Find out whether a query is the reproducible trigger
MySQL’s troubleshooting manual notes that roughly 95% of reported bugs are related to a particular query. That figure is a statement in the Oracle MySQL Reference Manual, not a prediction about your server. It does explain why the final query before a restart deserves careful examination.

For a controlled diagnostic window, temporarily enable the general query log, reproduce the failure with representative traffic, and compare the last query recorded before the process exits. The general log can be large and can add I/O overhead, so enable it only long enough to capture a test and disable it afterward according to your release’s configuration method.
- Record the current logging configuration and the exact start time of the test.
- Enable the general query log temporarily.
- Run the smallest request or test sequence that reliably triggers the restart.
- Match the last query in the general log with the MySQL error log and host journal timestamps.
- Disable the general log, preserve the relevant entries, and reduce the case to the smallest repeatable statement or request sequence.
A repeatable query-level crash is a bug or data-condition investigation, not an Apache capacity problem. Keep the minimal test case, server version, option-file selection, stack trace, and preceding log lines together before filing an issue.
Apply the fix that matches the confirmed failure class
| Confirmed evidence | Targeted remedy | Effect on Apache capacity | Reversibility and risk | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Kernel OOM message names mysqld or Apache |
Reduce aggregate memory demand, lower concurrency, or add capacity based on measured usage | May require fewer simultaneous Apache workers or smaller database allocations | Configuration changes are reversible; indiscriminate killing or deleting files is unsafe | Repeat the same traffic test and confirm no OOM event occurs |
| “No space left,” quota, inode, or write errors | Free or extend the affected filesystem, correct quotas, and repair ownership or mount conditions | Preserves Apache capacity once shared storage pressure is removed | Usually reversible when files are preserved; deleting database files risks data loss | Recheck bytes, inodes, quota, and successful MySQL writes |
| InnoDB path, permission, or hard-limit error | Correct the effective option file, directory ownership, mount, or innodb_data_file_path constraint |
Does not directly increase Apache capacity | Changing a path or limit can affect startup and data layout; back up first | Restart and confirm the log reaches a normal ready state |
| “Too many open files” or an insufficient service limit | Raise the systemd service limit with a drop-in and reload systemd | Allows more descriptors for MySQL; Apache still has its own limits | Persistent across reboot and package upgrades when stored as a drop-in; still requires capacity testing | Inspect the effective limit of the running process and retest |
| Same query precedes every exit | Build a minimal reproducible case and investigate the query, data, or server defect | Does not justify reducing Apache workers without separate evidence | Query changes are reversible when version-controlled; data changes require backups | Run the minimal case after each controlled change |
If memory pressure is confirmed
Do not begin by copying a universal Apache worker value or a universal MySQL buffer-pool percentage. No single ratio fits every distribution, workload, or MySQL release. Measure peak resident memory for Apache workers and mysqld during the traffic pattern that causes the incident, then reduce the combined demand.
- Limit web concurrency enough to keep headroom for the database and the operating system.
- Reduce MySQL allocations that are multiplied per connection or per operation only after checking their actual contribution to peak usage.
- Leave room for filesystem cache, background jobs, and temporary tables; a configuration that fits only when those consumers are idle will still fail under real traffic.
- Retest with the same request mix and concurrency that produced the OOM event.
If Apache was the process killed by the kernel, changing MySQL memory alone may not solve the outage. If mysqld was killed, reducing Apache concurrency may be the least invasive first step. The kernel event determines which service was terminated; the host-wide memory graph determines why.
If disk, quota, or permission errors are confirmed
- Identify the exact path named in the MySQL error log.
- Check its mount, free bytes, free inodes, and applicable quota.
- Check that the mount is writable and that the service account owns or can write the required directories.
- Resolve log growth, temporary-file accumulation, quota limits, or mount failures without deleting database state.
- Restart MySQL only after the filesystem condition is corrected, then verify normal startup and a successful write.
Changing Apache workers or MySQL memory does not fix a full volume. Likewise, moving a data directory without updating the effective option file can create a new “directory missing” or permission failure at the next restart.
Set persistent systemd limits correctly
For a systemd-managed installation, put service-specific limits in a drop-in rather than editing a generated unit file. The MySQL manual names LimitNOFILE, LimitCore, and environment variables as settings that can be managed this way.

- Create the drop-in directory for the unit installed on your host:
sudo mkdir -p /etc/systemd/system/mysqld.service.d
sudo editor /etc/systemd/system/mysqld.service.d/override.conf
Use the distribution’s mysql.service path instead if that is the actual unit. Add only settings justified by your logs, for example:
[Service]
LimitNOFILE=65535
LimitCore=infinity
The numerical value above is an example of a service limit, not a universal requirement. Choose a value that accommodates measured descriptor use and your operating system’s policy.
- Reload unit definitions, then restart the database:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart mysqld
sudo systemctl status mysqld
Oracle’s systemd guidance specifically requires reloading the configuration whenever override.conf is created or changed, followed by a service restart. Verify the effective limit after restart:
pid=$(pidof mysqld)
cat /proc/$pid/limits | grep -i 'open files'
Do not confuse a persistent systemd override with a one-session shell command such as ulimit. The latter may not affect a service launched by systemd and will not survive a reboot.

- Record MySQL uptime before the test and confirm it remains continuous afterward.
- Watch the MySQL error log, systemd journal, kernel messages, RAM, swap, disk, inode, quota, and descriptor usage during the run.
- Use the same request concurrency and query mix that preceded the crash.
- Check that Apache receives normal database responses and that MySQL can create or update the files it needs.
- Keep the general query log disabled unless another controlled diagnostic run requires it.
Make configuration changes one class at a time. If you reduce Apache concurrency, raise a descriptor limit, and move files simultaneously, you cannot tell which change addressed the failure—or whether a destructive side effect is being hidden.

When hosting migration or hardware changes are justified
A larger host or a split between Apache and MySQL can be reasonable when measurements show that the current machine cannot provide enough memory, storage throughput, or descriptor capacity for the required concurrency. It is not a diagnosis by itself. Migration will not repair corrupt InnoDB files, a wrong option file, a permission error, or a query that reproducibly crashes the server; those conditions can follow the database to a new machine.
Preserve the error log, host evidence, effective configuration, and a repeatable workload before moving. That record lets you verify whether the new environment removed the measured bottleneck rather than merely changing the symptoms.
A practical decision sequence
- Is
mysqldactually restarting? Comparemysqladmin versionuptime and the error log. - Did the kernel or service manager kill it? Correlate OOM, signal, and restart-loop messages with the timestamp.
- Is storage writable? Check bytes, inodes, quota, mounts, ownership, and the configured InnoDB paths.
- Is a limit exhausted? Inspect the effective open-file limit of the running service.
- Does one query reproduce the exit? Use a short, controlled general-log capture and build a minimal case.
- Only then tune capacity. Change the setting that corresponds to the evidence, reload the correct service configuration, and repeat the original test.
The key principle is simple: Apache traffic may expose a weakness, but the error log and host logs identify the failure class. Fix that class, verify the effective setting, and protect the database files throughout recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I tell whether Apache or MySQL is consuming too much memory?
Use the kernel OOM message to see which process was killed, then compare peak RAM and swap use for both services during the reproducing workload. The OOM record identifies the victim; host-wide measurements show the combined demand that created the pressure.
Should I delete ibdata or .ibd files if MySQL will not start?
No. Those files contain database state. Deletion is limited to narrowly defined initialization failures and is not a general recovery step. Read the InnoDB startup log and use a recovery procedure appropriate to the failure.
Why did my open-file increase disappear after reboot?
A shell-level limit does not configure a systemd-launched service. Store the setting in the unit’s drop-in, run systemctl daemon-reload, restart the MySQL unit, and verify the running process limit.
