For a general survival set, use diamond armor as your base and upgrade each piece to Netherite when you have a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template and one Netherite ingot per item. Build around Protection, Unbreaking and Mending; add Feather Falling to boots, Respiration and Aqua Affinity to the helmet, then choose Depth Strider or Frost Walker for your preferred water utility. Armor trims are cosmetic only, so choose them for pattern, rarity and color rather than defense.

What counts as the best armor in Minecraft?
There is no single best set for every situation. A useful comparison separates five things: defensive coverage, durability and repair effort, environmental specialization, progression resources and appearance. Tier and enchantment choices affect whether you survive a hit; a trim changes only how the item looks.

Diamond is the required base for Netherite equipment, and it remains the sensible endgame target even if you postpone the Nether upgrade. Netherite therefore adds a resource and exploration step rather than replacing diamond as an independent starting tier.
A Diamond Chestplate reference lists +8 armor and +2 armor toughness (Minecraft Wiki, 2024). The exact numerical values for every armor piece and material are not reproduced here; compare the tiers by their role and upgrade path instead of assuming an unlisted figure.

Armor tiers and a sensible progression path
| Tier or material | Best use | Progression implication | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|---|
| Leather | Earliest emergency protection | Useful before metal resources are established | Low-cost access versus limited long-term protection |
| Chainmail | Situational early-game equipment | Usually obtained through exploration or trading rather than a normal crafting route | Availability can matter more than convenience |
| Gold | Nether travel utility | A gold armor piece can prevent ordinary piglins from becoming hostile while you travel in the Nether | Low durability makes it a poor general set |
| Iron | First dependable full set | Natural bridge from improvised gear to diamond | Accessible materials and straightforward replacement |
| Diamond | Practical endgame base | Required base for Netherite upgrades | Mining time and diamond supply before committing to enchantments |
| Netherite | Upgraded endgame equipment | Requires a diamond item, a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template and a Netherite ingot for each piece | Template hunting, Nether travel and one ingot per upgrade |
This progression is intentionally pragmatic: move from whatever early protection you can make into iron, replace it with diamond, then upgrade valuable diamond pieces as templates and ingots become available. Enchanting an iron set can still be worthwhile if it keeps you alive while mining; do not discard a useful item merely because a higher tier exists somewhere in your future.
How to upgrade diamond armor to Netherite
Minecraft: Java Edition 1.20 changed the process so that Netherite equipment crafting “now also requires a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template.” Mojang’s 1.20 notes identify Bastion Remnant chests as the source, with every Treasure Room Bastion Remnant containing two templates. The templates are consumed when used, so a complete four-piece set needs four copies unless you duplicate one between upgrades.

Obtain the helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots you intend to keep. Enchanting before upgrading is allowed; the smithing operation preserves the item’s enchantments.
- Find a Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template. Search Bastion Remnant chests in the Nether. A Treasure Room bastion guarantees two templates, while other bastion layouts do not provide that same guarantee.
- Collect Netherite ingots. Plan one ingot for every armor piece. Four pieces therefore require four ingots, in addition to the templates.
- Use a smithing table. Place the template, the diamond armor piece and one Netherite ingot in the table’s three input slots, then take the resulting Netherite piece.
- Repeat for the remaining pieces. Keep unused templates in a secure chest until you are ready; a template disappears each time the upgrade completes.
Why duplicate the template?
Duplication is useful when upgrading a full set, replacing a damaged item or improving tools as well as armor. The official recipe uses seven diamonds, one block of the material associated with the template and the template itself, producing two copies. In practical terms, you spend one template to make two, increasing your stock by one. Duplicate before beginning a long upgrade session so that one accidental use does not leave you searching the Nether again.
Best general-purpose armor enchantments
A broad survival build should reduce the damage you take, slow durability loss and make repairs sustainable. The following arrangement covers common overworld, Nether and exploration hazards without locking every slot to a niche scenario.
Rank #2
| Armor piece | Core enchantments | Situational choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet | Protection, Unbreaking, Mending, Respiration, Aqua Affinity | Fire Protection, Blast Protection or Projectile Protection when one hazard dominates | Protection covers general damage; Respiration extends underwater breathing and Aqua Affinity improves underwater mining |
| Chestplate | Protection, Unbreaking, Mending | A specialized protection type for a hazard-focused set | The chestplate supplies a large share of body coverage, so general Protection is the default |
| Leggings | Protection, Unbreaking, Mending | A specialized protection type for a dedicated loadout | Durability and broad coverage are more useful than a cosmetic or narrow addition |
| Boots | Protection, Unbreaking, Mending, Feather Falling | Depth Strider or Frost Walker | Feather Falling reduces fall damage; the movement enchantments solve different water problems |
Protection
Use Protection on all four pieces for the default survival set. It is the broad answer when you do not know which damage source your next trip will involve. Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection are alternatives for specialized equipment, not extra layers that can simply be stacked with ordinary Protection on the same item. Because protection types compete for the same armor slot, choose the one that matches your planned hazard rather than trying to put every variant on one piece.
Unbreaking and Mending
Unbreaking reduces how often durability is consumed, while Mending turns collected experience into repairs on equipped or held items. Putting both on every armor piece decreases replacement work and is especially valuable on Netherite equipment, whose upgrade resources are expensive and whose templates are consumed. Mending does not remove the need to manage which damaged item receives experience; check that the armor you want repaired is eligible and equipped when collecting XP.
Feather Falling
Feather Falling belongs on boots in almost every long-term set. It addresses one of Minecraft’s most common sudden deaths: a fall from a cliff, ravine, tower or End island. It does not make risky jumps harmless, so keep blocks, water or another recovery plan available when exploring vertically.
Respiration and Aqua Affinity
Respiration extends the time you can remain underwater before drowning, while Aqua Affinity removes the normal underwater mining penalty. Together they make ocean monuments, shipwrecks and submerged construction substantially easier. They are helmet enchantments and do not replace the need to carry a breathing or escape plan in deep water.
Rank #3
Depth Strider versus Frost Walker
These are alternatives for boots. Depth Strider improves movement through water and is the better everyday choice for rivers, oceans, farms and underwater structures. Frost Walker creates temporary ice beneath your feet, allowing you to cross water without swimming; it is useful for travel across broad surfaces but can interfere with ordinary water movement and careful shoreline work. Decide based on movement, not on a claim that one is universally stronger.
Thorns
Thorns is optional. It damages attackers that hit you, but the reflected damage can increase armor durability use. Add it when automatic retaliation is worth more to you than minimizing repair frequency; leave it off a maintenance-focused set.

What armor trims do
Mojang’s official 1.20 documentation states: “Armor trims are purely visual with no gameplay benefits.” A trim does not increase armor, toughness, durability, enchantment strength or resistance to a particular damage type. Do not spend a rare template or a valuable material expecting better defense.
Trims can be applied to helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots at a smithing table. The recipe combines the armor piece, an Armor Trim Smithing Template and a trim material. The template determines the pattern; the material determines the color. The ten documented material choices are iron, copper, gold, lapis, emerald, diamond, Netherite, redstone, amethyst and quartz.
Rank #4
Choosing a trim deliberately
- Appearance: Compare the pattern against the base armor color and your character’s preferred palette. High-contrast materials are easier to see than a similar-toned trim.
- Rarity: Some templates require more dangerous or less predictable exploration than others. A rare pattern can be a trophy even though it has no mechanical effect.
- Resource cost: The material is consumed in the smithing operation, so use common materials for experimentation and save scarce resources for a final design.
- Set consistency: Matching all four pieces creates a coherent outfit, while mixing patterns can mark equipment roles such as mining, building or Nether travel.
Where every armor trim template comes from
The official 1.20 structure list associates templates with the following locations. Most entries are found by searching chests in the named structure; the two special acquisition methods are called out explicitly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Structure | Template or templates | Acquisition detail |
|---|---|---|
| Trail Ruins | Wayfinder, Raiser, Shaper and Host | Obtain them by brushing Suspicious Gravel |
| Pillager Outpost | Sentry | Search the structure’s loot |
| Desert Pyramid | Dune | Search pyramid chests |
| Shipwreck | Coast | Search shipwreck chests |
| Jungle Temple | Wild | Search temple chests |
| Ocean Monument | Tide | Elder Guardians can drop it; the monument has no chests |
| Ancient City | Ward and Silence | Search Ancient City chests |
| Woodland Mansion | Vex | Search mansion chests |
| Nether Fortress | Rib | Search fortress chests |
| Bastion Remnant | Snout | Search bastion chests |
| Stronghold | Eye | Search stronghold chests |
| End City | Spire | Search End City chests |
Trail Ruins are the exception to ordinary chest searching: the relevant templates are recovered through archaeology by brushing Suspicious Gravel. Ocean Monuments are another exception to the chest pattern because they have no chests; Elder Guardians provide the chance to obtain the Tide template.
Planning a trim collection
- Choose the pattern before spending materials. The template controls the design, so decide whether you want a single signature pattern or four different ones.
- Secure duplicates immediately. Because templates are consumed when applied, duplicate any design you expect to use on more than one piece.
- Match material to contrast. Iron, copper, gold, lapis, emerald, diamond, Netherite, redstone, amethyst and quartz each create a different color relationship with the base armor. Test a plentiful material first if you are uncertain.
- Keep functional upgrades separate from cosmetic projects. Finish the defensive enchantments and Netherite upgrades before risking rare templates in a decorative experiment.
Choosing armor for different situations
| Situation | Recommended foundation | Useful additions | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| General exploration | Netherite-upgraded diamond with Protection, Unbreaking and Mending | Feather Falling, Respiration and Aqua Affinity | Broad coverage rather than maximum resistance to one hazard |
| Nether travel | Netherite or diamond with general Protection | One gold piece for piglin neutrality; consider Fire Protection for a dedicated fire-focused set | Gold utility costs a protection slot and has poor durability as a full set |
| Underwater monuments | Diamond or Netherite with Protection | Respiration, Aqua Affinity and Depth Strider | Depth Strider helps movement; Frost Walker is not the underwater-movement solution |
| Long falls and vertical building | Any reliable tier with Protection | Feather Falling on boots | Fall protection does not replace cautious movement |
| Known single hazard | Use the best tier available | Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection where appropriate | The specialized protection competes with ordinary Protection on that item |
| Cosmetic collection | Any armor tier that meets your survival needs | Pattern and material chosen for appearance | Trims add no gameplay benefit |
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Spending a rare template on a test piece
Armor Trim Smithing Templates and Netherite Upgrade Smithing Templates are consumable inputs. Duplicate first when you know you will need multiple applications, and store the originals safely while exploring.
Assuming a trim improves defense
The pattern and material are visual. If you need more survivability, improve the armor tier or enchantments instead of changing the trim.
Best Value
Putting every protection type on one set
Protection, Fire Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection are competing choices for an armor slot. Build a general set with Protection, then make a separate specialized set only when your activity justifies the resource and inventory cost.
Ignoring durability pressure from Thorns
Thorns can be fun and useful, but reflected damage can consume durability faster. Pair it with Unbreaking and Mending, and omit it when minimizing repairs is the priority.
Upgrading without enough materials
Each Netherite armor upgrade consumes one ingot and one template. Count your pieces, ingots and templates before opening the smithing table; an incomplete set is still useful, but the cost should be deliberate.
Quick Recap
A practical final checklist
- Move from early protection to iron, then diamond, before pursuing a full Netherite set.
- Reserve one Netherite ingot and one Netherite Upgrade Smithing Template for each piece you upgrade.
- Use Protection, Unbreaking and Mending as the general foundation.
- Add Feather Falling to boots, Respiration and Aqua Affinity to the helmet, and select Depth Strider or Frost Walker according to movement needs.
- Use Fire, Blast or Projectile Protection only when the dominant hazard warrants replacing general Protection.
- Treat Thorns as optional because it can increase durability use.
- Choose armor trims for appearance, rarity and color contrast; they do not change gameplay.
- Duplicate templates with seven diamonds, one block of the template’s material and the template itself before applying them repeatedly.
