Switch 2 storage is a credible frustration: the console has 256 GB of internal storage, some of which is reserved for system use, and expanding it requires a newer card format. That can make managing a digital library less convenient than it first appears—but it does not mean every owner needs to buy a card.
Why Switch 2 storage can become a pain point
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2. The usable amount is lower because some storage is reserved for system use, and game installations compete with other data for the remaining space. If your library grows beyond what fits, you will need to remove content, redownload games later, or add compatible storage.
Storage complaints have also appeared in gaming coverage. WIRED discussed storage capacity, large game files, and the cost of the newer card format in 2025, while Tom’s Guide wrote about using an expansion card in an article published July 9, 2026. Those articles show why the issue gets attention; they do not establish how many owners are frustrated, and their price references are dated rather than current quotes.
Which cards work with Switch 2?
Switch 2 uses microSD Express for expandable storage. Nintendo says only microSD Express cards can store game data, screenshots, and videos on the console. An ordinary microSD card from an original Switch cannot store or load Switch 2 digital games or save data.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
If you shop for a card, check the exact product packaging and listing for the words “microSD Express” and compatibility with Nintendo Switch 2. The format requirement is established by Nintendo; it does not make one brand, capacity, or current price the right choice for everyone. Compare capacity, price per added gigabyte, manufacturer, and warranty, and check current availability before buying.
What an expansion card can—and cannot—store
A microSD Express card expands space for game data and media files. It is not a place to back up game saves: Nintendo says save data cannot be saved or copied to a microSD Express card. Extra storage can help you keep more game data installed, but it does not replace a separate save-data backup method.

- HEAT MANAGEMENT REIMAGINED. SanDisk ThermAdapt helps keep devices from overheating with a specially designed enclosure and controller that uses dynamic adaptive thermal management.
Physical games are not always a way around storage limits, either. Nintendo says game-key cards do not contain the full game data, so a physical purchase may still require game data to be stored on the console or an expansion card.
Do you need a microSD Express card?
That depends on how you use the console. A card is useful if you want to keep a larger library installed and avoid managing space as often. If you play a smaller rotation of games and do not mind deleting and redownloading them, managing internal storage may be enough. There is no universally necessary capacity: choose based on the games you want installed at once and the current price of a compatible card.

Note that actual usable storage may be slightly less due to system formatting and a portion reserved for card management functions, which is a standard industry practice to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
Nintendo also notes that Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch games, but some original Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible. Do not assume that every game from an older library will work on the new console.

Storage is a plausible explanation for the title’s unexpected frustration, but the available product specifications and coverage cannot establish that it was a particular writer’s personal experience. Nor do individual complaints establish that storage is a widespread problem. What is clear is the practical trade-off: 256 GB of internal storage, a required newer card format for expansion, and the option to manage a smaller installed library instead.
