How to Store and Organize Multiple Commander Decks

Keep each finished Commander deck in its own correctly sized, labeled box, then group the boxes in a larger case when you need to store or carry several together. Check fit with the deck’s real sleeves and accessories before choosing storage.

Store each finished Commander deck in its own correctly sized deck box, label the box with a consistent identifier, and group the boxes in a larger case or container when you want to move or store several together. Keep ready-to-play decks apart from loose collection cards. Before settling on a box, test it with the deck in its actual sleeves; capacity claims can differ for single-sleeved and double-sleeved cards, and accessories take extra space.

How do you store multiple Commander decks?

The simplest reliable system has three layers: a separate box for each assembled deck, a clear way to identify each box, and an optional larger container for the boxes you want to keep or carry together. This keeps a deck intact when you take it out, makes it easier to retrieve the right one, and avoids having to search a mixed stack of cards before a game.

Start by deciding which cards belong to each finished deck. Keep its commander, main deck, and any cards you routinely use with it together. If tokens, a reference card, or other accessories are part of your normal play setup, decide whether they belong inside that deck’s box or in a separate, clearly identified space. Then check that the box closes without pressure on the cards.

There is no single ideal arrangement for every player. A person who usually takes one deck to a game may prefer compact boxes that travel independently. Someone who brings several decks may prefer to group those boxes in a larger case. At home, a shelf or drawer can work as the outer container if the boxes remain separated, labeled, and easy to remove.

Choose storage based on the deck as it is actually sleeved

Do not choose a deck box by the words “100-card” alone. Commander decks are commonly stored as a 100-card unit, but the room a particular box provides depends on the box’s design and the thickness of the sleeves. A box that fits 100 single-sleeved cards may not fit the same deck double-sleeved. Even a box described for double-sleeved cards may be intended for a particular sleeve thickness.

Asmodee USA’s product descriptions provide two model-specific examples. The Side Holder 100+ XL is described as fitting 100 double-sleeved cards in particularly thick inner sleeves. The Deck Holder 100+ is described as protecting up to 100 double-sleeved cards. Both listings describe a write-on strip for labeling. These are product claims for those models, not a general capacity standard or independent comparison of deck boxes.

Box listed by Asmodee USA Published capacity detail Labeling detail
Side Holder 100+ XL Made to fit 100 double-sleeved cards in particularly thick inner sleeves Write-on strip
Deck Holder 100+ Protects up to 100 double-sleeved cards Write-on strip

Neither description establishes that every sleeve combination, commander placement, or collection of tokens will fit. Treat product capacities as a starting point, then check the manufacturer’s current dimensions and intended configuration for the specific box you are considering.

Test a box before making it your standard

  1. Sleeve one complete deck in the configuration you intend to keep: single-sleeved or double-sleeved. Include the commander in the place you plan to store it.
  2. Put the cards in the candidate box in their normal orientation. Add any tokens or accessories you want to keep with that deck.
  3. Close the box gently. The lid or closure should not need to be forced, and the cards should not be compressed to make it shut.
  4. Remove and return the deck once or twice. Check that cards do not catch on the opening and that the commander or token packet does not prevent the box from closing.
  5. If you cannot test the exact box, compare its stated dimensions and sleeve-capacity guidance with your setup before buying. A capacity claim for a different model is not a substitute.

If you change sleeve thickness later, repeat the fit check. A previously suitable box may become too tight after a deck is double-sleeved, or after you add a separate stack of tokens.

Use one identification system across all the boxes

Labels prevent a row of similar boxes from becoming a guessing game. Pick one primary identifier and apply it to every deck. The commander’s name is easy to recognize if commanders rarely change; a short deck nickname is more useful if you rebuild around different commanders or use the same commander in more than one deck.

A useful label can be as simple as “commander name” or “deck nickname.” If you want a second cue, add the deck’s color identity or use a matching divider or visual marker. The key is consistency: if one box uses a commander name, another uses a nickname, and a third relies only on color, the system will be harder to scan.

Set up labels in a few minutes

  1. Write down the names you actually use for your decks. Keep each label short enough to read while the box is on a shelf or inside a case.
  2. Choose a primary label format, such as commander name or nickname, and use that format on every box.
  3. Add a secondary cue only if it helps you distinguish decks—for example, a color marker or a matching divider.
  4. Place the label where it remains visible when the box is stored. If the box has a write-on strip, use it; Asmodee USA describes such a strip on the two models above.
  5. When a deck changes identity, update the label at the same time you reorganize the cards. Remove or cover obsolete labels so the box does not point to an old deck.

Wizards Play Network guidance for game stores recommends labeling product categories to help visitors navigate. A home deck system is a different use, but the same basic principle applies: a consistent visible label helps people find the item they want without opening every container.

Decide whether you need individual boxes or a larger case

Individual boxes and a larger case solve different problems. An individual box keeps one deck together and lets you take it on its own. A larger case consolidates several boxed decks for storage or travel. The two approaches work together; a larger case does not have to replace each deck’s individual box.

Storage arrangement Works well when Check before choosing
One box per deck You want to select or carry decks independently Fit with actual sleeves, room for any included accessories, and whether labels remain visible
Several deck boxes grouped in a larger case or container You want to keep or move multiple finished decks together How many of your actual boxes fit, how easily each can be identified and removed, and the container’s footprint
Loose cards stored with finished decks Use a separate area instead for unsorted cards or deck-building parts Keep the ready-to-play decks distinct so selecting one does not involve searching mixed stacks

GamesRadar’s editorial coverage discusses a multi-deck case as a way to organize ready-to-play decks, including an example that uses visible commander cards and dividers. That is an editorial example, not a universal recommendation or a current capacity comparison. Check the particular case and your own boxes rather than assuming a case will hold a certain number of decks.

For a home setup

Put finished, boxed decks together in a place where you can see or read their labels. A larger case is useful if it keeps the boxes organized and easy to pull out; it is not essential if a shelf or drawer does the job. Keep loose cards, deck-building pieces, and incomplete lists in a different container or clearly separate section. Otherwise, a quick choice of a ready deck can turn into sorting through cards that are not part of any finished deck.

For taking several decks to play

Use a larger case or container only after checking it with the individual boxes you plan to bring. Consider whether the decks stay separated, whether you can identify each box without opening the case, and whether removing one deck disturbs the others. Leave room for any play accessories you want to transport, but do not assume a product’s deck capacity also includes space for dice, tokens, or other items.

Keep tokens and accessories from disrupting the system

Tokens and other small items are easy to misplace when they are separated from the deck they support. They also affect fit: a box that comfortably holds the deck may not have room for an additional token stack or a separate commander. Choose a consistent approach rather than squeezing extras into whichever box happens to have space.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
  • Keep them with the deck: Use this approach when the box has room to close comfortably with the cards and accessories inside.
  • Use a separate labeled section: If the deck box is full, store that deck’s tokens in a small separate container or partition and identify which deck they belong to.
  • Separate shared accessories: If an item is used with several decks, keep it in a common accessory space instead of assigning it ambiguously to one box.

Before standardizing on a box, test it with the complete package you actually want to carry. Capacity language may refer to cards, not every accessory a player might add.

Account for boxes included with preconstructed decks

A preconstructed product may include a box, but inclusion alone does not confirm fit for every storage setup. Wizards’ Commander Masters product guide lists one deck box among the contents of each of the Commander deck products it describes. That is specific to the products covered by that guide; it does not establish that every preconstructed Commander deck includes a box, or that the included box accommodates every sleeve configuration or extra tokens.

If you plan to use an included box, sleeve the deck first and check the fit rather than assuming the original packaging will still work. If it does not fit your preferred sleeves or accessories, keep the deck together in a box sized for that setup and use the included packaging for something else or recycle it as appropriate.

Build a repeatable routine for adding or changing decks

A storage system stays useful when every new or rebuilt deck goes through the same short process. That avoids the gradual accumulation of unlabeled boxes, loose tokens, and finished decks mixed with cards that are still being sorted.

  1. Assemble the deck as you intend to play it. Decide whether it will be single- or double-sleeved and identify the commander and any accessories you want to carry with it.
  2. Select a box by fit. Use model-specific capacity guidance, then test the complete sleeved deck and accessories when possible.
  3. Label the box. Apply the same naming rule used for your other decks. Add a second visual cue only if it contributes useful information.
  4. Choose its home. Place the box with the finished decks, in a larger case if appropriate. Keep unfinished card pools elsewhere.
  5. Update after a rebuild. If the commander, nickname, sleeve setup, or stored accessories change, update the label and recheck the fit.

This routine also makes it easier to notice a missing deck box: each finished deck has a known label and a known storage location.

Common storage problems and how to fix them

The deck box will not close easily

Do not force it. Remove the extra cards or accessories and check whether the box is suitable for the actual sleeve thickness. If the deck is double-sleeved, use a model whose capacity guidance covers that configuration, and verify whether the stated capacity applies to the thickness of your inner sleeves.

Several boxes look alike

Add a visible, consistent label to every box. Use a commander name or deck nickname as the primary identifier, then add a color or divider cue only if it helps distinguish similar decks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot find a deck among loose cards

Move completed decks into their own labeled boxes and store unsorted cards and deck-building parts separately. A multi-deck case is intended to consolidate finished, ready-to-play decks, not to make a mixed collection easier to sort through.

Tokens no longer fit with the deck

Choose whether tokens travel with their deck or in a separately labeled section. If they stay in the box, test the complete load and closure again. If the box is full, a separate identified container is clearer than an unmarked bundle that could be mistaken for another deck’s cards.

An included box does not suit your sleeves

Test the sleeved deck rather than relying on the fact that the product came with a box. Use another box if needed; product-included packaging is not evidence that it will fit every sleeve thickness or extra card arrangement.

What to check before buying storage

Product capacity, footprint, labeling, and availability vary by model and region. The available product examples establish that some boxes are described for 100 double-sleeved cards and offer write-on labeling, but they do not establish a universal best box, comparative case capacity, current regional availability, or current prices. Check the current listing for the exact model in your region before purchase.
