You can run an unattended podcast feed by using FFmpeg on a Linux VPS to send an audio-and-video stream to YouTube, then using systemd to supervise FFmpeg. YouTube’s broadcast is the viewer-facing event; the stream is the incoming media connection. Treating those as separate parts matters: systemd can restart FFmpeg, but it cannot by itself guarantee that YouTube’s broadcast returns to a live state.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
The workflow has four parts: an archive file or playlist on the VPS, FFmpeg to read and send it in real time, a YouTube ingest address and private stream key, and a systemd service to start and supervise FFmpeg. YouTube associates the incoming stream with a live broadcast.
YouTube’s API distinguishes a liveBroadcast, the event and eventual viewer-facing video, from a liveStream, which describes the transmission. A broadcast is bound to one stream, while a stream can be reused for recurring broadcasts. See Google’s broadcasts and streams overview.
This guide covers sending an archive from a VPS to a YouTube live event. A single event that ends after one recording is different operationally from a continuous channel that loops content or a sequence of scheduled broadcasts. Decide which behavior you want before choosing how FFmpeg handles the end of a file.

Prepare the channel and broadcast
Confirm livestream access and choose a broadcast model
Verify in YouTube Studio that the channel can livestream and that the desired privacy, recording, DVR, and replay settings are available. For an API-created scheduled broadcast, Google’s LiveBroadcasts insert reference requires a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Channel permissions and current resource restrictions can affect available options.
If you use a default channel stream rather than creating a scheduled event, follow the current Studio workflow for that stream. Do not assume a process reconnect will create a new event or restore an event whose lifecycle has ended.
Get the current RTMPS address and stream key
Obtain the primary ingest address and stream key from YouTube Studio, or from the LiveStreams API’s cdn.ingestionInfo fields. The LiveStreams API reference documents ingest addresses, stream names, status, and health information, including warnings such as missing audio or configuration mismatches.
Use RTMPS when supported by the selected encoder and the current YouTube ingest guidance. Google describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL; its documented requirements include the rtmps protocol, a valid YouTube server and path, and port 443. See Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Keep the stream key secret. Do not place it in a public repository, screenshot, shared unit file, or shell command that may be saved in shell history. Restrict access to whichever secret file or environment mechanism you use, and rotate the key in YouTube if it is exposed.
Choose how the archive should play
One recording, played once
For a one-time event, point FFmpeg at the recording and let it reach end-of-file. Decide whether the event should end then or whether an operator will stop the feed and close the broadcast. A completed broadcast is processed into a YouTube video, but it may not appear immediately.
One recording, repeated continuously
For a continuous feed, configure repeat behavior deliberately and test what happens at the boundary between the end and beginning of the file. The FFmpeg documentation includes input-loop options and a real-time file-to-RTMP example; consult the installed version’s FFmpeg documentation and protocol documentation. A loop option does not determine whether YouTube keeps the same broadcast live or how viewers experience the transition.
Multiple episodes in sequence
For an archive of episodes, define an explicit playlist or orchestration plan. Decide whether episode boundaries should pause, continue into the next item, change metadata, or end one broadcast and start another. A single-file loop is not a complete playlist manager, and transitions, end-of-file behavior, and broadcast lifecycle need separate testing.

Audio-only episodes need a video track
YouTube Live expects the media streams appropriate to the selected ingest setup. If the source is audio-only, provide a visual track such as a static or animated show slate and verify in YouTube’s stream health that both audio and video arrive as expected. The sources cited here do not establish a podcast-specific visual design or universal encoding profile.
Build and validate the FFmpeg command
First inspect the actual file’s codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and audio properties. FFmpeg’s documented example shows a file being sent to an RTMP destination at real-time speed, and its input options include looping. Adapt the command to your installed FFmpeg version, the archive, and the current YouTube encoder requirements rather than copying an assumed profile.
- Use stream copy only when suitable. If the source audio and video codecs and container are compatible with the chosen YouTube ingest profile, copying may reduce VPS CPU work. If they are not, transcode to a format supported by that profile.
- Transcode when needed. Select output codecs and settings using YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the target format. The material available for this guide does not establish exact bitrate, keyframe interval, resolution, or frame-rate recommendations; do not guess those values.
- Make file paths stable. Store media where the service account can read it, use absolute paths, and avoid relying on a user’s interactive shell or working directory.
- Test the media itself. Confirm the intended audio is audible, the visual track is correct, and episode boundaries behave as planned before enabling unattended operation.
FFmpeg documents network protocol behavior, including options relevant to reconnection in particular network-input scenarios. Those options are not a universal cure for an output connection failure; test the behavior of your actual command and installed version.
Run FFmpeg under systemd
A systemd service is useful for starting a foreground FFmpeg process at boot, keeping its logs accessible, and applying a deliberate restart policy if it exits. Use a dedicated unprivileged account with only the media and secret access it needs. Unit-file syntax, environment handling, and hardening options vary with distribution and systemd version, so validate the example structure against your VPS’s local documentation.

- Create a dedicated service account and media location. Ensure that account can read the archive and the protected secret material, but does not have unnecessary administrative access.
- Store ingest credentials securely. Put the key in a root-readable or service-account-readable secret file or another suitable protected mechanism. Avoid embedding it in a public unit file, command history, or logs.
- Create a service with a foreground command. Set
ExecStartto the FFmpeg command that reads the chosen archive and sends it to the current YouTube ingest endpoint. Do not background FFmpeg; let systemd supervise the process it starts. - Choose restart behavior intentionally. A restart policy can relaunch FFmpeg after a process failure, but overly aggressive retries can obscure a persistent configuration or network problem. Confirm the directives supported by the installed systemd version.
- Validate before enabling at boot. Check unit syntax with the distribution’s systemd tools, start the service manually, then inspect its status and journal output. Confirm YouTube sees the incoming stream before relying on the service unattended.
The StreamNeo article Running FFmpeg as a systemd Service So Your Loop Survives a Reboot also discusses supervising an FFmpeg loop; systemd syntax should still be checked against the target host.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Test recovery and verify the YouTube side
Test the full chain before leaving it unattended. Start a private or unlisted event where available, inspect YouTube’s stream health, review service logs, and verify the expected audio and video. Then conduct a controlled maintenance test: interrupt the service or network, observe whether systemd restarts FFmpeg, and separately check whether the intended YouTube broadcast returns to a live state.
These are separate checks. A healthy systemd service only shows that the process is running; it does not prove that YouTube has accepted the feed, associated it with the intended event, or resumed the viewer-facing broadcast. Google’s Life of a Broadcast documentation describes the broadcast lifecycle and stream-health checks.
Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not detect a feed: verify the current ingest address, protocol, port, path, and key; check that the service can reach the endpoint and inspect the FFmpeg journal output.
- Stream health reports missing audio or a configuration mismatch: inspect the source streams and output mapping, then compare the encoder output with the current YouTube guidance. For audio-only sources, check that the visual track is present.
- FFmpeg runs but the broadcast is not live: check YouTube’s broadcast and stream state separately from systemd status. The process may have reconnected without restoring the intended event.
- The service fails after reboot: confirm the unit is enabled, paths are absolute, the service account can read the media and secret, and the environment expansion works on that distribution.
- The feed stops at an episode boundary: determine whether the archive plan intentionally ends there. Implement and test explicit sequencing rather than expecting a single-file loop to manage a directory of episodes.
- The replay is not immediately visible: allow YouTube to process the completed broadcast, then check the channel’s video and replay settings.
Close the broadcast and check the replay
When ending a one-time event, stop FFmpeg cleanly and let YouTube complete processing. The completed broadcast is converted into a YouTube video, and replay availability can be delayed. Check the resulting video on the channel after processing rather than treating process shutdown as proof that the archive is already playable.
