How to Stream MP4 Videos Continuously to YouTube from a VPS in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop an MP4 on YouTube from an India-based VPS, enable live streaming for your channel, install FFmpeg on a Linux VPS, and send a real-time video feed to YouTube over RTMPS using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. FFmpeg can loop the file indefinitely, but continuous operation still depends on your file being compatible, the VPS network and process staying healthy, and YouTube accepting the stream.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
  • A Linux VPS with enough sustained outbound bandwidth. The VPS provider, suitable plan, transfer allowance and India-specific performance depend on the vendor. Check its fair-use and data-transfer terms; do not assume a plan’s advertised port speed guarantees sustained streaming bandwidth.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus the MP4 file accessible to the server.
  • The YouTube stream server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password.
  • Permission to broadcast every part of the video. Clear rights to both picture and audio before looping it.

This is a server-side encoder workflow: the VPS reads and sends the file, so your home computer does not need to run FFmpeg. No India VPS provider or price is established here; choose one based on sustained egress, transfer limits, location and support rather than a generic speed claim.

Enable YouTube Live and get the stream details

  1. Confirm that the channel is verified and eligible under YouTube’s live-streaming rules. If livestreaming is unavailable, resolve the channel restriction or eligibility issue before configuring the VPS.
  2. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Choose the encoder workflow and create or select a stream, following YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
  3. Copy the stream server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Use YouTube’s supplied values rather than guessing or constructing an endpoint. Prefer the RTMPS server URL where provided: YouTube recommends RTMPS, which secures RTMP with SSL/TLS. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and RTMPS ingestion requirements.
  4. Keep the key out of public scripts, screenshots, repositories and logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the VPS configuration.

Prepare the VPS and MP4

Install FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your VPS’s Linux distribution, or use a trusted build compatible with that system. The exact installation command varies by distribution and FFmpeg build, so check the distribution’s current package instructions. Confirm the binary is available with ffmpeg -version and consult the local help output, such as ffmpeg -h, when an option or protocol is unavailable.

Put the video on the server and inspect it

Upload the MP4 to the VPS using a secure method and note its full path. Check that FFmpeg can read it and identify its video and audio streams, codecs, resolution, frame rate and duration. A file extension alone does not guarantee that the contained codecs or timestamps are suitable for YouTube ingest. FFmpeg’s options and behavior are documented at ffmpeg.org.

Plan for bandwidth

Estimate outbound traffic from the stream’s total bitrate: a stream averaging 4 megabits per second sends roughly 4 megabits each second while it runs, before network overhead. That is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a VPS capacity recommendation. Choose a plan with headroom above the configured video-and-audio bitrate, then check provider transfer caps and fair-use terms. A VPS advertised as being in India does not, by itself, establish its sustained upload capacity or route to YouTube.

Start an infinite MP4 loop with FFmpeg

For an MP4 whose video and audio codecs, timestamps and stream structure are accepted by YouTube’s ingest path, this template reads the file at real-time speed, loops it indefinitely and passes the streams through without re-encoding:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
  -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv
  "YOUR_RTMPS_SERVER_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the file path and quoted destination with the exact values from your server and Live Control Room. Keep the URL and key private. This is a command template, not a tested command; actual compatibility depends on the input and FFmpeg build.

  • -re paces input reading at its native rate, which FFmpeg documents as useful when output flow speed matters, including live streaming.
  • -stream_loop -1 requests infinite input looping. FFmpeg’s command-line documentation describes -1 as looping indefinitely.
  • -i identifies the input file. Input options belong before the input they affect; output options belong before the output URL.
  • -c:v copy -c:a copy avoids re-encoding. It will not make an incompatible file compatible. If YouTube rejects the stream or reports health problems, use a suitable transcode configuration instead.
  • -f flv selects the output container used for this RTMP/RTMPS-style streaming workflow.

See the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg option documentation for option details. A video with no audio stream may need an audio track added; do not assume every ingest path accepts silent video in the same way.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings when you need to transcode

Stream copying is the simplest route only when the MP4 already fits YouTube’s ingest expectations. If it does not, configure FFmpeg to encode an accepted video and audio format, guided by YouTube’s current encoder settings. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Its guidance lists 128 Kbps as a recommended stereo audio bitrate for RTMPS and 44.1 kHz stereo sampling. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular file, bitrate or VPS connection will work unchanged.

Choose a resolution, frame rate and bitrate appropriate to the source and available outbound bandwidth; avoid setting a target bitrate beyond the VPS connection’s stable capacity. Test the actual stream with representative motion and audio and watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators before relying on it. The exact FFmpeg encoding options depend on the source, chosen output settings and installed build.

Verify the stream and make it resilient

  1. Start FFmpeg and check its output for connection errors, timestamp issues, missing streams or repeated failures.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for YouTube’s preview and stream-health feedback. Confirm the video and audio look and sound correct before taking the broadcast live using the control flow for that stream.
  3. Test with representative motion and audio, as YouTube recommends, and monitor stream health during the broadcast.
  4. Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd, configure restart behavior, and retain logs in a location with appropriately restricted access. A supervisor can restart a process, but it cannot guarantee recovery from every VPS, network or YouTube ingest failure.
  5. Monitor both the FFmpeg process and YouTube’s stream health. A process that is running does not necessarily mean viewers are receiving a healthy stream.

Plan around YouTube archives and copyright

Long broadcasts may not be archived

YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a recording matters, keep a separate archive or plan shorter broadcast sessions around the viewer experience. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

Looping a file does not remove rights obligations

YouTube’s live-stream terms say creators represent that they have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may replace the image, interrupt or terminate a stream. Even licensed content may require the rights owner to allowlist the channel through Content ID. Review YouTube’s live terms and copyright enforcement guidance before broadcasting.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
YouTube receives no signal or the connection fails Wrong server URL or key, an unavailable RTMPS connection, or a network/firewall issue Copy the current URL and key from Live Control Room, confirm the key has not been changed, and check VPS outbound connectivity and FFmpeg protocol support. Do not expose the key while sharing logs.
FFmpeg reports unsupported codecs or YouTube reports a stream error The MP4’s streams or timestamps are not accepted for pass-through Inspect the file’s actual streams and use an appropriate transcode configuration based on YouTube’s encoder settings; copying streams cannot fix incompatibility.
Audio is missing or rejected The file may lack an audio stream or use an unsuitable audio configuration Inspect the MP4’s audio stream. If needed, add or encode an appropriate audio track and verify the result in YouTube’s preview and health feedback.
The stream buffers, drops frames or repeatedly disconnects VPS egress may be unstable or too close to the configured media bitrate; provider limits or network variation may also matter Check YouTube stream health and FFmpeg logs, reduce the output bitrate if needed, allow headroom, and verify the provider’s sustained egress and transfer policies.
FFmpeg stops and the broadcast ends The process, VPS or network may have failed Inspect supervisor and FFmpeg logs, configure process restart behavior, and check YouTube after reconnecting. Restart automation is operational protection, not a guarantee against every failure.
The live archive is missing or incomplete The stream exceeded YouTube’s stated 12-hour archive boundary or another capture issue occurred For future broadcasts, keep a separate recording or plan shorter sessions; YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured.
The image is replaced or the stream is interrupted A third-party copyright match or rights issue may have been detected Confirm that you have the necessary rights, including music rights, and consult YouTube’s copyright enforcement guidance. Ask the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting where applicable.
