You can no longer start a new NVIDIA GameStream setup through NVIDIA’s software. NVIDIA removed GameStream from its SHIELD client and discontinued GeForce Experience, while the current NVIDIA app does not include the former Settings → Shield → GameStream controls. The modern replacement is Sunshine as the host and Moonlight as the client.
This still lets you stream games from a Windows gaming PC to computers, tablets, smartphones, TVs and other supported devices. Existing GameStream installations may continue to work, but they rely on discontinued software and are not the recommended route for a new setup.

What replaces NVIDIA GameStream?
GameStream was NVIDIA’s host technology: a gaming PC encoded the game and sent it to a SHIELD device or Moonlight client. Moonlight itself was never the host. It is an open-source client implementation of NVIDIA’s GameStream protocol.

- Sunshine: the host software installed on the gaming PC.
- Moonlight: the client installed on the device where you want to play.
Sunshine supports NVIDIA, AMD and Intel GPUs, along with features such as AV1 encoding, IPv6, built-in Internet hosting and additional controller functionality. Moonlight clients are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Raspberry Pi 4, Steam Link hardware, Android, Amazon Fire tablets and TVs, iPhone and iPad, Apple TV and ChromeOS.

Download Moonlight from its official site, and use Sunshine as the host rather than looking for a GameStream switch in the NVIDIA app.
Why the old GameStream instructions no longer work
Older guides commonly say to install GeForce Experience and open Settings → Shield → GameStream. That was the correct legacy path, but it is no longer a current NVIDIA-supported setup. Installing the NVIDIA app replaces or removes GeForce Experience, and the NVIDIA app does not provide GameStream host controls.
The old documented host requirements—GeForce Experience 2.1.1 or later, NVIDIA Quadro Experience and a supported NVIDIA GPU—apply only to the discontinued GameStream host. They should not be treated as current Sunshine requirements.

Likewise, GameStream was not limited to NVIDIA’s own SHIELD client hardware. Moonlight expanded access to PCs, phones, tablets, TVs and streaming devices. That broad client support remains available, but Sunshine now supplies the host functionality.
Set up game streaming with Sunshine and Moonlight
1. Prepare the gaming PC
- Install Sunshine on the PC that will run the games.
- Install the latest graphics driver appropriate for your GPU.
- Keep the host PC awake and logged in when you want to connect remotely.
- For the first pairing, connect the host and client to the same home network.
A wired Ethernet connection for the host is preferable. The client can use Wi-Fi, but a 5 GHz or newer wireless network usually provides a better experience than congested 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
2. Install Moonlight on the target device
Install Moonlight on the computer, tablet, smartphone, TV or other supported device where you want to play. Moonlight is the client; installing it alone does not make a PC stream games.

3. Pair Moonlight with the host
- Open Moonlight on the client.
- Add or select the gaming PC when it appears on the local network.
- Select the PC to display a pairing PIN.
- Enter that PIN in Sunshine’s pairing prompt on the host.
- After pairing, select a listed application or the desktop session.
Pairing on the same home network first makes troubleshooting easier. Internet access can be configured afterward, but it is not automatic simply because local streaming works.

Choose a game from Moonlight’s application list. If the game does not appear, add it through Sunshine’s application configuration. The old GameStream system only exposed games NVIDIA had manually validated, even though GeForce Experience could show a broader library. A title did not need to be officially “GameStream Ready” to be streamed: NVIDIA documented that users could manually add nearly any game.
Some games need to be launched once locally to finish installation before streaming works. If a game fails when started directly, select Moonlight’s Desktop session, sign in or reach the Windows desktop, end that session, and then try launching the game again.

Streaming over the Internet
Local-network streaming and remote streaming are different setup tasks. The legacy GameStream guide required additional router and firewall configuration for Internet access and documented a GameStream IPv6 Forwarder for IPv6 connections. Do not assume that a successful home-network pairing automatically makes the host reachable from outside your home.
Sunshine’s current documentation includes built-in Internet-hosting support, but you still need to follow its networking requirements and secure your setup. If your Internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, inbound connections may require an alternative approach because ordinary port forwarding may not work.

Moonlight cannot find the PC
- Confirm that both devices are on the same local network during initial pairing.
- Check that Sunshine is running on the host.
- Allow Sunshine through the host’s firewall when Windows asks.
- Temporarily check whether a VPN, guest Wi-Fi isolation or separate VLAN is blocking local discovery.
The old GameStream firewall command below belongs to the discontinued NVIDIA host and should not be treated as a Sunshine configuration command:

The legacy Moonlight troubleshooting guide identified Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling as a possible cause. On the host, open Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Change default graphics settings, turn off Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling, restart if Windows requests it, and test again. This is a troubleshooting workaround, not a universal requirement.
The game will not launch
- Launch the game once on the host PC to complete installation or first-run setup.
- Confirm that Sunshine has the correct executable or launcher entry.
- Start the Moonlight Desktop session first, then close it and launch the game.
- If the host resolution is already set to the desired value, change it to another resolution and then change it back in NVIDIA Control Panel.
The controller works in one game but not another
Controller problems can be game-specific rather than a general Moonlight connection failure. Test the controller in Steam Big Picture. If it works there but not in the game, investigate that game’s controller mode, launcher settings or input compatibility rather than immediately changing the network configuration.
Closing Moonlight did not close the game
Exiting the stream or closing the Moonlight client does not necessarily terminate the session on the host PC. The game may remain running so that progress is not lost. Return to the host or reconnect through Moonlight to close the application normally.
