Run an encoder on an always-on Linux virtual machine (VM) in an Indian cloud region, and send its output to YouTube over RTMPS using the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The VM must keep the media and encoder running, sustain the stream’s outbound bitrate, and recover if the process or connection stops. YouTube’s published encoder guidance is a starting point—not a promise that a particular VM will deliver uninterrupted service.
Before you start: channel, rights and broadcast setup
- Your channel must be verified, have no livestreaming restriction from the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum livestreaming age of 16. Check the current eligibility rules for the channel you plan to use: YouTube livestreaming eligibility.
- Use videos you own or have permission to broadcast. Technical ability to retransmit a video does not establish the rights to use its picture, music, or other material. Copyright claims or other policy issues can affect a broadcast.
- Create a live event in YouTube Live Control Room. For recurring, automated broadcasts, the YouTube Live Streaming API separates the viewer-facing
liveBroadcastfrom the incomingliveStream; its recurring-event workflow can reuse a configured stream with separate broadcast resources. See the YouTube Live Streaming API overview.
Choose an Indian cloud region and VM
Choose an always-on Linux VM by evaluating its available machine types, sustained outbound network capacity, service availability, egress charges and the operational support you need. A region’s presence in a provider’s catalog does not establish that a given instance can sustain your chosen bitrate or stay uninterrupted.
| Provider documentation | India location listed | What to note |
|---|---|---|
| AWS global infrastructure | Mumbai (ap-south-1); Hyderabad (ap-south-2) | AWS indicates Hyderabad requires opt-in. Confirm region access, instance availability and account-specific costs. |
| Google Cloud locations | Mumbai (asia-south1) | Google documents Mumbai for its Live Stream API. Confirm that the VM and services you need are available in your chosen region. |
These listings are starting points for comparison, not performance measurements or endorsements. Check the provider’s current network and pricing details for your specific VM, including ongoing outbound data charges.
Stage the video and set up the encoder
Upload the source video files to storage accessible to the VM, then install an encoder such as FFmpeg. Plan enough disk space for the files, logs and any temporary data. If you want a repeating playlist rather than one repeating file, select a playlist or looping method supported by your chosen encoder and test it with the actual files; behavior can vary with formats, durations and audio tracks.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This workflow depends on a working encoder process, media path and server environment. Validate the chosen encoder’s current documentation and command syntax for your installed version rather than assuming a generic command will handle every playlist or looping case.
Copy YouTube’s RTMPS details into the encoder
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key supplied for that broadcast.
- Configure the encoder to send its live output to the supplied RTMPS endpoint and use the matching stream key. Use the endpoint YouTube provides; do not substitute a guessed address.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your channel. Store it in a protected configuration or secret-management mechanism, not a public script, log, or repository.
RTMPS carries RTMP through TLS encryption and uses port 443 in YouTube’s developer guidance. YouTube recommends it as the secure option for ingestion: YouTube encoder settings and RTMPS guidance and the YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide.

Choose resolution, codec and bitrate
YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, up to 60 frames per second. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution and frame rate, so use the settings for your actual output rather than treating one figure as universal. See YouTube’s current encoder settings.
| H.264 output | YouTube-published recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published recommendations, accessed in 2026, for the named H.264 settings—not measured requirements or guarantees for a VM. The same guidance lists 5 Mbps as an H.264 minimum and 14 Mbps as recommended for 1080p30. Leave network headroom above the encoder bitrate and test sustained outbound capacity on the chosen instance. Budget for ongoing egress as well as VM time; actual costs depend on the provider, configuration and account.

YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for viewers, so the server’s job is to send a valid, stable input stream; it does not need to create every viewer playback rendition itself. A higher-resolution or higher-frame-rate source may demand more encoder and network capacity. Match output to the source and your capacity, and avoid needlessly upscaling lower-quality material.
Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start with a representative video that includes the motion, audio and duration patterns you expect to stream.
- Start the event and encoder, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages for ingestion, video and audio problems.
- Listen to the audio and watch the feed through a complete loop or playlist transition. Confirm that playback resumes as intended and that the encoder is not silently ending at the end of a file.
- Monitor the VM’s outbound network, CPU, memory, disk space and encoder logs under the expected workload. A successful brief test does not prove continuous operation.
YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health and the audio/video feed: YouTube encoder guidance. For a 24/7 broadcast, plan who or what will notice a stalled process or unhealthy feed.

Make the server recoverable
Continuous operation is an engineering responsibility, not a property guaranteed by selecting an Indian region. Use a process supervisor or equivalent mechanism to restart the encoder after a crash, retain logs, monitor free disk space and outbound connectivity, and configure alerts so failures do not go unnoticed. Test recovery deliberately before relying on the setup. These are implementation recommendations; they do not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
If the workload justifies the extra cost and complexity, consider a backup encoder path. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion addresses for supported workflows: YouTube ingestion protocols. Configure and test any backup against the actual broadcast design instead of assuming it will take over automatically.

24/7 limits to verify for your channel
YouTube’s published materials explain eligibility, ingestion, encoder settings and operational monitoring, but they do not establish a universal maximum duration for this exact continuous prerecorded workflow or guarantee indefinite retention of a live archive. Check the current Studio and Help rules for your channel and broadcast setup before relying on a particular runtime or archive outcome. The available guidance does not support promising zero interruptions.
