You can use a Contabo VPS to encode and send a continuous YouTube live stream, but that is different from watching or relaying an existing YouTube playlist. For a broadcast, use media you own or have permission to retransmit, prepare it on the VPS, encode it, and send it to YouTube using a supported ingest workflow. YouTube’s live documentation describes encoder-to-YouTube delivery; it does not establish a supported or rights-cleared method for relaying arbitrary YouTube playlist playback. YouTube Live Streaming API implementation guide
First decide what “stream a YouTube playlist from a VPS” means
There are two different tasks behind that phrase:
- Remote viewing: opening YouTube on a remote desktop hosted by the VPS so you can watch videos remotely. This does not create a live broadcast on your channel.
- Live rebroadcasting: sending audio and video from an encoder running on the VPS to YouTube Live. This creates a new broadcast and requires rights to use the media.
This guide covers the second task. It does not provide a command recipe for downloading and relaying arbitrary YouTube playlists: the official live guides explain how encoders send content to YouTube, not how to copy another channel’s playback into a new stream.
Check media rights before you build a stream
Use recordings you created or media whose license or written permission explicitly allows the copying, continuous playback, and YouTube retransmission you intend. A video being publicly viewable on YouTube does not itself establish permission to download, cache, or rebroadcast it. YouTube’s API developer policies prohibit API clients from copying audiovisual content without prior written approval and prohibit offline playback; review the YouTube API Services Developer Policies before using YouTube APIs or content in an application.
For regional-language playlists, check the rights for every track, recording, image, and any included subtitles or captions. A language choice does not change the rights question. YouTube’s live-broadcast resource includes caption and regional availability settings, but those settings do not grant rights to source videos or ensure that a selected playlist has captions in the language you want. What YouTube’s live ingest documentation supports
Encoder-to-YouTube delivery
YouTube documents live ingest formats such as DASH and HLS for encoders delivering a live event to YouTube. Its DASH guidance describes timely delivery of the manifest and initialization segment in a passive HTTP server setup. Its HLS guide describes an encoder sending media playlists and segments to YouTube, with HTTPS, a persistent connection, one encoded stream, and muxed audio and video. These are ingest requirements, not instructions for extracting an existing YouTube playlist. DASH ingest · HLS ingest
Captions and API access
If you are managing captions through the YouTube Data API, the captions list endpoint returns track metadata rather than caption text. Obtaining the text is a separate download operation that requires authorization; a captions.list call costs 50 quota units according to the current API reference. Captions: list · Captions: download

Plan a Contabo VPS for an encoder workload
A VPS can host the encoder and media files, but advertised port capacity is not a promise of sustained upload throughput, low latency, or encoding performance. Contabo’s support article lists VPS/VDS port speeds from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps and says there is no default bandwidth limit, subject to fair use; unusually high or disruptive use may be throttled. The product documentation lists plan-family port capacities spanning 200 Mbps to 1,000 Mbps. Check the current plan and fair-use terms directly before choosing. Contabo support · Contabo VPS plans
Choose based on the workload you will actually run, not a headline port number. Contabo lists Core, Performance, and Storage VPS families with different CPU, RAM, storage, and port capacities. Software encoding can use substantial CPU; the number of concurrent streams, codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate all affect the demand. The available plan information does not establish a minimum suitable plan or a measured encoding result for your specific media.

- CPU: matters most when the VPS must encode or transcode in software. A stream that simply sends an already prepared compatible file may have a different CPU load.
- Upload capacity: must accommodate the outgoing bitrate continuously, with headroom for protocol overhead and network variation. A port specification alone does not guarantee the achieved rate.
- Storage: must hold the files you are authorized to use, plus any working space required by your encoder and workflow.
- Memory and concurrent work: account for the operating system, encoder, media handling, and any simultaneous streams; no universal allocation follows from the available plan descriptions.
Set up a compliant VPS-originated live stream
The exact commands and settings depend on your operating system, encoder, source format, and the ingest protocol YouTube makes available for your broadcast. The steps below describe the workflow without presenting an unverified command sequence as a tested recipe.
- Prepare authorized media. Put creator-owned or properly licensed recordings on the VPS through a method that does not copy protected YouTube playback without permission. Organize the files in the order you want them to play and confirm that the license permits continuous looping and live retransmission.
- Choose the broadcast format. Determine the resolution, frame rate, audio format, and bitrate your source and encoder can sustain. If you need to encode on the VPS, confirm that the selected CPU can handle the workload; no Contabo plan is established here as sufficient for every format or number of streams.
- Create a YouTube live broadcast and ingest configuration. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and obtain its stream key and server/ingest details. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public script repository, or share it with people who should not broadcast to your channel. YouTube’s live setup documentation explains creating an encoder connection and sending the stream to YouTube. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Configure the encoder for the documented ingest protocol. Follow the current YouTube requirements for the protocol you select. For HLS, the documented workflow requires HTTPS, a persistent connection, one encoded stream, and muxed audio/video. DASH has its own manifest and segment-delivery requirements. Do not assume a playlist-player URL is an ingest URL.
- Start the encoder and verify the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives audio and video, that the language-specific material plays in the intended order, and that the stream has no unexpected gaps or silence before making it public.
- Keep the process supervised. Configure the VPS and encoder to restart after an ordinary process or host reboot if your setup supports it, and monitor the YouTube stream and server. A VPS port rating does not guarantee uninterrupted delivery, and this evidence does not establish a particular unattended-recovery configuration.
Why watching a YouTube playlist on a remote VPS is not the same workflow
If your goal is only to watch a playlist from another location, use YouTube’s normal playback experience or an authorized remote desktop. That does not originate a live broadcast for viewers on your channel. Conversely, putting YouTube playback through an encoder would involve copying and retransmitting audiovisual content; public availability is not permission, and the cited YouTube live documentation does not define this as a supported playlist-relay workflow.

Troubleshooting the main failure points
YouTube does not receive the encoder signal
Check that the broadcast is configured for an encoder, the server address and stream key match the current YouTube Studio details, and the encoder is using the matching ingest protocol. If you have exposed the key, rotate it in YouTube Studio before resuming.
The VPS cannot sustain the outgoing stream
Reduce the workload or bitrate, check the VPS’s actual network performance, and review Contabo’s current fair-use terms. Advertised port capacity is not a sustained-throughput guarantee; the sources do not establish a guaranteed rate for a particular plan.
The encoder cannot keep up
Software encoding may saturate CPU, especially at demanding resolutions or frame rates. Reduce encoding complexity or use already prepared compatible media if your workflow and rights allow it. Verify the impact with your own server monitoring rather than assuming a plan family is sufficient.
Some videos or captions are missing
Confirm the source files and playlist order locally. Do not infer caption text from API track metadata: the captions list operation returns metadata, while downloading text is separate and requires authorization. Captions and regional settings do not establish that a video is licensed for broadcast.
